Under The Covers With Mayhem – Chapter 3 March 28, 2024

After a long gap between Under The Covers With Mayhem Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 the third chapter has arrived just a few weeks later. This time I bring you a cover of the Cars 1978 hit “Just What I Needed”. The original reached number 27 in the USA and 17 in the UK chart. The artist is GmBt Life who comprise of Aleksi Mäkelä, Timo Zwandun, and Nabim Fieev. They are based in France but have links with Finland and Afghanistan. This one is a very different take on the original version and I love the slow, building broodiness and dark feel that it delivers.

I have said previously that my ideal cover version has a different slant from the original rather than just a facsimile-style cover. So the generic boy bands are probably never likely to feature, but you never know, right? Feel free to recommend any songs you think should be included in Under The Covers With Mayhem. I want to stay clear of the mainstream ideally, but off-the-wall covers by major artists might work too 🙂

Under The Covers With Mayhem – Chapter 2 February 24, 2024

It took a while but this is the second post in what is a very, very occasional series. The first was back in August 2022 and featured three songs. A metal cover of Harry Styles’ “As It Was” by OHP. Deer Scout’s version of Kate Bush’s “Suspended In Gaffa” and a cover of Radiohead’s “Let Down” by Mini Trees This time around it is a cover of Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower” by iconic and eccentric British band XTC. I adore the Jimi Hendrix version of “All Along The Watchtower”, but that was probably an obvious choice so I have gone for a more leftfield take on the song from XTC. This is bordering on weird and Devoesque and as a result, is rather splendid. What are your thoughts on this version?

Under The Covers With Mayhem – Chapter 1 August 16, 2022

This is the first post in what I hope will be a regular, although maybe occasional series. I plan to share some great cover versions here and as a special bonus to all of you who bother to read this stuff, the first one features three covers. My ideal cover version is one that has a different slant from the original rather than just a facsimile style cover. So the generic boy bands are probably never likely to feature, but you never know, right?

OHP

First up is Oren Halmut a.k.a OHP an LA-based metal head who gives a full-on metal take on Harry Styles’ 2022 pop hit “As It Was”. This is a superb tune and with a heavy hammering like this it takes on a fabulous new lease of life. I am now a definite OHP fan. Check out the OHP YouTube channel there are some excellent covers there.

The second is Deer Scout with a Kate Bush cover, “Suspended In Gaffa”. The song was the fourth single to be lifted from Kate’s ‘The Dreaming’ album from 1982, although it was released in Europe and Australia it wasn’t a single in the UK. Deer Scout is the brainchild of Dena Miller (vox and guitar) who is very well supported by, Zuzia (cello/harmonies), Joanna (drums), and Liz (bass). This takes Kate’s original a drives it in a weird dreamy folk direction and I love it!

The third and final track for this post is from another LA-based artist, singer-songwriter Mini Trees‘ version of Radiohead’s “Let Down”. It is more lo-fi than Thom and the boy’s track from 1997’s ‘OK Computer’ and Mini Trees cover has an angelic, ethereal vocal which mesmerised you and eases your pain, well that’s what it did for me anyway!

Feel free to recommend any songs that you think should be included in Under The Covers With Mayhem. I want to stear clear of the mainstream ideally, but off the wall covers by major artists might work too 🙂
