Music trivia, useless info, extra added random stuff and the odd rant from me

“The rain falls hard on a humdrum town” September 1, 2016

I have decided to post any music related jokes that I come across, especially if they are at my usual groan level of humour. So with thanks to those lovely people at Popbitch for bringing this one to my attention.

The drummer off of the Inspiral Carpets, Craig Gill apparently now runs Manchester music tours. Last weekend he did two tours entitled ‘Morrissey and the Smiths’. The first one in the morning had a very healthy 85 punters. The tour stops off at many Smiths historical highlights including; Strangeways Prison, Salford Lads Club, the Southern Cemetery and Morrissey’s childhood home.

But according to one Smiths tourist the highlight was this joke from Mr Gill.

Q – What does Morrissey have in his sandwiches?

A – I don’t know, but Marr might!

I love that one, feel free to send me your favourite music related jokes. I will be happy to post them and to give you a name check. You can send them via email to me at adamson.will@gmail.com. Just put Another Crap Music Joke in the subject line.

In case you were fooled, this last one is an excellent spoof!

The other day I decided to take a quick count of all the artists in my album collection where I have at least 10 albums by a single artist. I included CDs, LPs and cassettes (although the only non compilation cassettes that I have are David Bowie bootlegs). Oh and while I’m on bootleg recordings obviously I have included them whether they are live, studio outtakes or simply unreleased stuff. I have not included digital recordings. I was surprised to find that there are 4o artists where I have at least ten releases by them. The list is below, (artist followed by the number of albums) there are no real surprises for me, are you surprised at any on this list? Have you ever done anything similar? I have also added a song from each of the top ten artists 🙂

David Bowie 141
Bob Dylan 30
Johnny Nash 26
Bruce Springsteen 26

The mysterious Ann Coates is listed as the backing vocalist on the Smiths classic “Bigmouth Strikes Again”. Ann is certainly not who she seems, she is in fact Morrissey with his vocal speeded up with a bit of studio jiggery-pokery!

Guess who sings backing vocals on Morrissey‘s “Piccadilly Palare”? It’s only that Suggs bloke (a.k.a Graham McPherson) off of Madness isn’t it! The song also featured Andy Rourke off of the Smiths on bass guitar which according to Wikipedia is the last time any former member of the Smiths played on a Morrissey track. The song reached number 18 in the UK charts in 1990. It made it to number 5 in the Irish chart and stalled at number 2 in the US Modern Rock chart. The song can also be found on the Morrissey compilation album; ‘Bona Drag

mozzaWhen I read the headline I assumed that Morrissey was ready to release a cover of the Archies “Sugar Sugar”. But then I read it again and I realised that the story was in fact about a potential appearance by our Mozza in the long running BBC radio soap opera The Archers. I can only assume that he’ll be playing himself and that he will try to air his militant veggie views.

“By the morning gate the friendly ranger waits” December 30, 2013

Phil-Lynott_de4bf9ef10Thin Lizzy‘s first album was released in 1971 and was called, perhaps unimaginatively, ‘Thin Lizzy’. But did you know that it was going to be named after Phil Lynott‘s cat Pippin. The album title would have been ‘The Friendly Ranger’ because Pippin had a white face with a black strip across the eyes which looked a little like the Lone Ranger‘s mask. Although the album title must have been a disappointment for Pippin, Phil made up for it by naming his music publishing company Pippin The Friendly Ranger. The album did feature a track called “The Friendly Ranger at Clontarf Castle“.

thinlizzyThat is probably a level of fame achieved by no other cat in rock history. Morrissey had a cat called Minnie, Debbie Harry‘s was called Sunday Man and the Factory Records cat based at the Hacienda was known, in keeping with every Factory asset. as FAC191. This post is dedicated to my beautiful wife Catherine a.k.a Catwoman on this blog as she has been ill over the Christmas period.

So finally after a few false starts Stephen Morrissey has published his autobiography wich is either very cleverly or very lazily (depending on your opinion) titled ‘Autobiography’. Most of the reviews have been reasonably good, perhaps driven by the reviewer thinking they might get a scathing review of their own critical talent from Mozzer. Anyway I haven’t read the book yet which rather interestingly is published by Penguin Classics.

tumblr_mre460SMyn1seji43o1_500So if I haven’t read the book what is the purpose of this post? Well simply to publicise something  that has been published on Tumblr under the title ‘This Charming Charlie’. It is a collection of Charles Schultz‘s Peanuts cartoon strips with their original dialogue replaced by Morrissey lyrics. Click here to check it out, but do it quickly because someone (I wonder who, because it certainly doesn’t seem to be Mozzer) is taking a copyright action against Lauren LoPrete’s site.
