“C.J.O.S. (Circle Jerk Of Sadness)” – Industry Standard August 3, 2025

Back in April we reviewed, “BLAIR!”, Industry Standard’s debut single, we bloody loved that one, so there was a lot of excitement here at Mayhem Towers when their latest hit the world. It is wonderfully titled “C.J.O.S. (Circle Jerk Of Sadness)” and is rather different, but just as explosive, as “BLAIR!”. This new track is a post apocalyptic plea hopefully telling us to sit up and fucking do something about our world. Maybe more people will listen and actually try to do something to save our planet. But the first United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP1 was in 1995, later this year COP25 will be held in Belém, Brazil. So 30 years and 25 conferences and still the earth is dying while the rich and powerful do absolutely fuck all! OK, I am told that killing the rich might be a little extreme but let’s at least tax the bastards.

While billionaires, filthy rich tech bros, oligarchs, dictators and would-be dictators continue their own obscene circle jerk while counting their money and rockets the rest of us are left to rot so that this vile group of people can wank themselves into oblivion while covering each other in their, probably gold flecked, salty discharge like some kind of bukkake Armageddon. Perhaps that is why Trump is so orange.

Anyway as for the song it is a controlled chaos driven punk attack. According to lead vocalist Gaby, the song is “a panic attack disguised as a joke” which deals head-on with themes like climate collapse, existential burnout, and dissociation, and “watching it all happen with a milkshake in hand”. The anxiety here is off the scale but there is also a brilliantly crafted injection of very dark humour. When was the last time a Greek mythological figure got mentioned in a punk song? Has it ever happened? Cerberus gets a part in this lyric. He is the monstrous, multi-headed dog that guards the gates of the Underworld, preventing the dead from leaving and barring the entrance to the living. Lines like “A masterpiece of human emissions” and “even the ants are tired” might be short but they use the language supremely well in a way that oozes frustration.

If anyone chose to merge line dancing with punk, this song would be a perfect fit. Imagine replacing the classic punk Pogo dance with a violently punky Morris dance, without the bells, obviously. Incidentally I fucking hate Morris Dancing, but a screaming, raucous, high octane version in the mosh pit is something that many of us would love. That kind of celebration of all that is good about the world might just help to avert our minds, albeit briefly, from the shitty state of the world. Bottom line though this is a stonkingly good song that deserves massive exposure.

Industry Standard are the previously mentioned lead singer Gaby (Gabriella Gonzalez) and three punk powerhouse musical henchmen: Phillip Stakem whose riffs are like small megaton explosions, Oliver Jackson’s bass playing split an atom and Tim Sketchley plays his drums so hard the echo bounces off the moon. I reckon if you love Scene Queen, Delilah Bon, tiLLie and Casseyette you will worship Industry Standard.

“Bring Me Back From The Black Beyond” – Erotic Secrets Of Pompeii June 10, 2025

Imagine, if you will, a mad professors laboratory in the Stygian darkness of deepest Transylvania. Then imagine that someone has captured the creative brilliance of Talking Heads, added the essence of My Chemical Romance and sprinkled that with some Mark E Smith. Are you picturing it yet? You are? Well good, but now you no longer have to use the window of your imagination. Out of that laboratory has emerged the stunning new single from Erotic Secrets Of Pompeii, “Bring Me Back From The Black Beyond”. It is their best yet and it gets better with every listen. In their own words the Erotic Secrets of Pompeii are an apocalyptic art rock band from Bristol. Frankly I think they have injected their songs with a tiny dose of the apocalypse in the name of art.

The song is underpinned by a dark disturbing synth riff and Thomas Hawtin’s vocals are on the verge of madness, but seemed to be reigned in for now. Lyrically I believe it describes a journey into some kind of purgatory and a desire to be able to bring someone back from that bad place. There are so many great lines, I particularly love “Life holds no meaning here in the realm of death. As love holds no meaning in the realm of hate”. The video, directed by Saul Knight, is a wonderfully weird fun fest and I love it! I was going to add that this is a band made for the 21st century, but fuck that, this is a band made for the 22nd century! Inject the Erotic Secrets Of Pompeii into your veins right now!

‘Reflecting Light And Causing Chaos’ – Dead Rat Society May 28, 2025

Every so often an album comes along that grabs you by the (metaphorical) balls and doesn’t let them free until you submit to its masterful musical charms. ‘Reflecting Light And Causing Chaos’ by Dead Rat Society is such an album. It burst into the atmosphere on 2nd May like a comet seeking to plough a hole from one side of our planet to the other and it has been on constant rotation here at Mayhem Towers. Dead Rat Society are based in London and blend so much into their glowing musical palette; Grunge, Punk, Metal, HipHop and EDM and probably more. They have started to pick up a lot of Radio play, particularly from John Kennedy of Radio X. He played their single “Girls” six times and gave it the X-Posure ‘Big One’ and they appeared on a coveted spot on his ‘The Remedy Night’ on March 25 this year. Dead Rat Society are Ed Harris (Vox, Guitar, Keys, Songwriter, Lyrics), Ben Potter (DJ, Producer, Songwriter), Connor Firmston (Bass) and Will Piney (Drums). Apparently the band began as a bit of a musical joke which experimented with influences from Prog Rock and old school horror films.

The album opens with “The Night” a wonderfully warped clarion call for what is to follow. It is like the Prodigy but in a much darker universe than this, the constant siren drone starts off giving harsh undertones before it becomes a part of you. I love the inclusion of a piece of the Star Wars Imperial March (Darth Vader’s Theme), subtle and perfect. Lyrically this bunch are like 21st century Beat Poets, the line “You’re a lowercase phrase hanging with the capital” speaks volumes in just a few words. “Can You Feel It Your Face” follows and it has a jolly happyish synth riff coupled with a vocal that is haunted with anguish. One of the vocal hooks asks “are we the last of our race”. Sadly I fear that we are, but Dead Rat Society will be featured heavily on my Armageddon playlist. The band are not brand new to With Just A Hint Of Mayhem, we reviewed their single “Come With Me On A Spaceship” back in January and that song is the third track on the album. Back then I said that I think we should all get on their spaceship and zoom to Planet Dead Rat! Lyrically it is pertinent and amusing. I particularly love “Have you tried looking outside?..everything is really Fucked“. This is electro punk garage hiphop and that is just for starters. They also incorporate some wonderful voice samples. Well they may not be samples, but either way they work. Ed from the band said this of the track “The song is mainly about inviting someone to let loose, pull away from the drudgery of modern life and relax for a bit. Away from all the lame shit. Escapism through and through by any means necessary!” I stand by every word I said back then!

In a strange coincidence, for me anyway, “Needed The Sun” opens with what sounds a little like the bass opening of the northern soul classic “The Night” by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Well a loose coincidence but it does share a title with this Dead Rat Society album, right. Anyway “Needed The Sun” has a gorgeous obsidian dark jazz feel to it. It is also hard to ignore a song that opens with “I’m a fuck
But I hide it well
“. On “Immaculate Vibes” I sensed a Scroobius Pip influence coupled with a Sleaford Mods feel. After a few listens I think “Shoplifters Welcome” might be my favourite track on the album. It has an insistent jagged electro feel throughout and a lyric that venomously spits anger. It also boasts words that IDLES might be proud of. The band go into an almost ballad type mood on “Leave With Care” where the emotion and pain is almost palpable. I feel that I am almost suffering with them. Not many bands or artists can pull off such a great modern blues feel as Dead Rat Society do on “Little Victories”. It reminded me of the best of Iggy Pop and Nick Cave.

“Bounce Back” is a great track that in my opinion is begging for a great dance remix, maybe by Rizzle Kicks? Of all the tracks here I feel that this one ought to be all over the radio. It is funky, catchy and seeps into your mind and stays there rent free. The album closes with “Dream River” which washes over you with dreamy calm, like a tranced out Stone Roses, but with much better vocals. The only negative comment I have is that it is way too short at less than 30 minutes, but then again, fuck it, just play the damned thing twice. Sum 41 once called an album ‘All Killer No Filler’ and that phrase describes ‘Reflecting Light And Causing Chaos’ by Dead Rat Society perfectly. Can I add that the album cover is probably the best use of a baby on a cover since Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ back in 1994. Honestly You are an absolute fuckwit if you listen to this and don’t rush onto Dead Rat Society’s spaceship and blast them into your life. If you don’t then I suspect that your brain might be missing!

“BLAIR!” – Industry Standard April 18, 2025

There is so much ignorance and apathy regarding climate change and environmental collapse. We should be thankful that some people are speaking up about it rather loudly. Industry Standard‘s new single “BLAIR!” highlights lead singer Gaby’s stress, worry, fear and concern about our planet. It is a powerful call to arms as Gaby repeats the songs mantra “Is She Gonna Make It“. The song is an absolute fucking cracker, and I am not talking about a cheap firecracker. I am talking of a cracker so explosive it would have sent Katy Perry and her Blue Origin pals beyond the known universe. Now that is a good thing right? Especially for the environment!

The band are the aforementioned lead singer Gaby (Gabriella Gonzalez) and three punk powerhouse musical henchmen: Phillip Stakem who knows a great riff, Oliver Jackson whose bass playing could start an earthquake and Tim Sketchley who plays his drums so hard I hear that Elvis heard them in his secret base on the moon! I reckon if you love Scene Queen and Casseyette you will adore Industry Standard. The video, directed by Ben Garnet, is a dark Barbie bad bimbo apocalyptic cartoon horror film and it is so very good in the way it communicates a serious message and entertains in parallel. The song actually appeared a few months ago, but you lot mostly ignored it. To mangle the great Liam Neeson’s line from ‘Taken’ (2008), “If you don’t ignore it this time and play it loads that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you do ignore it again, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kick your sorry ass” You have been warned!

“Speak Medieval” – Erotic Secrets Of Pompeii March 27, 2025

Two years ago I had an absolute blast witnessing Erotic Secrets Of Pompeii live for the first time, at the Fulford Arms in York. In my review of that night I used the opening narration from Rod Serling’s original Twilight Zone TV Series to try and give some flavour and explanation of what Erotic Secrets Of Pompeii are like. Having listened to their new single “Sing Medieval” I think Rod Serling’s words still sum them up perfectly. Those words are “You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension – a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You’re moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You’ve just crossed over into the Twilight Zone

The new song is frantic and full of warped post punk angst and energy. The angular guitar riffs are a punky take on Tome Verlaine and Television. There is a 60s cinematic feel to the track and a sprinkle of the B-52s “Rock Lobster”. The lyrics might have been made by someone throwing all the violent parts of nursery rhymes and fairy tales into a blender and spewing them out in swirling staccato voice shots. Word pairings like “I am trickster, mischief maker” and the infectious “Here comes the chopper, to chop – to chop, chop off their head” refrain are like no other lyric and work incredibly well because of that. Thomas Hawtin’s voice and delivery is reminiscent of early Talking Heads when David Byrne’s voice was weird, jagged and other-worldly. The band are on fire in this frenetic journey through the darker parts of the world and its bloody history. Erotic Secrets Of Pompeii are a truly and wonderfully different band and one that is perfect for this century and this sad, mad world that we live in. “Speak Medieval” is simply another step to world domination by Erotic Secrets Of Pompeii.

“Sea Of People” – Archy & The Astronauts February 4, 2025

Archy & The Astronauts have a cracking new single out. It is called “Sea Of People” and it rocks like an absolute demon. It draws from deep in classic rock’s motherlode. The song flys in on an undercurrent of mean riffs and I can imagine this song being a mosh magnet. There are elements of the Foo Fighters in their sound, but they are very much an original unit. This young band has already garnered a lot of interest. They reached the last round of the Glastonbury ‘Bread and Roses’ stage final and they were finalists in the Kerrang! Radio/Marshall Records final 10 Competition.

Archy & The Astronauts are Tomás Phipps (the titular Archy) lead singer and guitarist, Nathan Snook on bass and Travis Coyne on drums. Archy had this to say about the song, “This track encapsulates the aspirations we hold as a band—to create a community of fans who can all immerse themselves in the extraordinary world of live music. The song delves into the challenges of feeling like an outsider in life, urging listeners to resist settling for the ordinary and embrace a life of fulfillment and passion“. Get Archy & The Astronauts into your life now, otherwise you might miss them donning spacesuits and hitting the stratosphere in a huge riff powered rocket!
