The Mayhem Charts – July 2024 August 6, 2024

Here is the Mayhem chart for July 2024. Regular and constant readers know that the chart is based on my Spotify listening habits over the last month gathered by obscurify.com. Apparently, my tastes have fallen to 95% more obscure than the rest of the UK! A drop of 1% from last month. Blimey am I becoming mainstream? The chart remains contemporary-ish (but if a classic artist releases something new they might feature in the chart). However, the top three “Legacy” artists for last month were David Bowie, Elton John, and Alice Cooper. Obscurify also suggests the most obscure artists I have listened to and for July those were PERCY, WREX, and Tercelvoice. There is a top ten artists chart and a top 5 songs chart. There is the usual eclectic mix of artists, including three that were in the top ten last month, Kate Nash, Scene Queen, and Delilah Bon! Delilah has been in the artist charts for eight consecutive months. The only artist to appear in both lists for July is Kate Nash. Female artists and female-fronted bands make up 50% of the artist chart! The number one song is “Everyone Is A C*nt Except Me by Judy Raindrop (actually Judy doesn’t exist, the song was put together by those wonderful and funny people at Laughter Tracks). So without further ado here are those charts in full! Click here for the Spotify song playlist.

The Mayhem Charts – January 2024 February 1, 2024

Here is the Mayhem chart for January 2024. Regular readers know that the chart is based on my Spotify listening habits over the last month. The chart is contemporary-ish, rather than just an oldies chart However, the top three “Legacy” artists are Led Zeppelin, Manic Street Preachers, and Jesus Loves You. Surprisingly for the second month in a row David Bowie is not in the top 3. There is a top ten artists chart and a top 5 songs chart. There is the usual eclectic mix of artists, including two who were in the top ten last month (Rebecca Ferguson and Delilah Bon). Only one of the top five songs is by an artist which features in the top ten artist chart. That honour goes to Lola Young at number 5 in the song chart and number 8 in the artist chart. The Bridge City Sinners are number 1 in the artist chart and Polevaulter are number 1 in the song chart. So without further ado here are those charts in full! Mayhem Virgins – The Bridge City Sinners January 8, 2024

This is the 20th in the Mayhem Virgins series where we showcase artists that have never featured on these pages before. This time it is the turn of the Bridge City Sinners all the way from Portland Oregon, where they began a busking journey. They formed in 2016 and are purveyors of country, punk, folk, dark sounds and so much fun. If goth bands smiled and made bluegrass music they might sound like the Bridge City Sinners. I imagined them coming from a parallel universe where the Charlie Daniels Band joined forces with Gogol Bordello! The instrumentation feels properly organic and includes stand-up bass and banjo among other fine instruments. Their current album, ‘Unholy Hymns’, is a classic, and even with streaming, you will not want to skip any of the fabulous songs. This follows their self-titled release in 2016 and ‘Here’s To The Devil’ in 2019. All were released on the band’s own Flail Records label. The current album ‘Unholy Hymns’ made it to number 70 on the US Billboard charts in 2021.

Reading about them online suggests that they are an incendiary force of nature on stage and I really want to see them soon. Their own bio says that their live show is as punk as fuck, now that sounds perfect to me! If you are in the USA they are playing dates in Reno, Vegas, and LA at the end of March. Before that, they play a show in Vancouver on 16th March. Scott Michaud plays double bass as though it is connected to his nervous system. Lightin’ Luke adds some demonic fiddle and wonderful vocals. King Strang plays some superb guitar and Clyde McGee is a banjo god! Lead singer Libby Lux is a superstar in waiting, and probably won’t have to wait for too long! It is worth checking out some of the band members’ solo material too, Libby Lux’s “Two Dollar Bill” video is included below.
