The Mayhem Charts – February 2025 March 12, 2025

Here is the Mayhem chart for February 2025. Regular readers know the chart is based on my streaming listening habits. These are gathered over the last month by obscurify.com. After a slight blip last month my taste in music remains 99% more obscure than the rest of the UK! The chart remains contemporary-ish (but if a classic artist releases something new they might feature in the chart). However, last month’s top three “Legacy” artists were Gene, Roy Wood and Kate Bush. Obscurify also suggests the most obscure artists I have listened to for January and they are Liz Davinci, Not Now Norman and Kindelan. After being in the chart for months Delilah Bon dropped out last month, but she returned in February at number 9 in the artist chart.

An artist who featured in our latest Mayhem Virgins post, abs, sits at number 10. Top of the artist chart for February is a great favourite here at Mayhem Towers and a band we have championed for a long while. It is the wonderfully original and uber talented Jellybricks. Only one artist in the artist chart remains from last month and that is herorangecoat. Sitting at number two in the artist chart is my favourite living band, Avalanche Party. They are one of two artists to appear in the artist chart and the song chart. The other is the Last Of The Fallen Angels. Kindelan was number one in the song chart last month. She stayed in the chart for February, dropping to number 5. Push Puppets hit the top of the song chart with the stunning track “All Together On 3”. So without further ado here are those charts in full! Click on the Spotify link below to listen to the famous (or infamous) five! Nearly twenty minutes of great tunes!

“Devil’s A Day Away” – Jellybricks January 11, 2025

Probably Harrisburg, PA’s finest band, Jellybricks are rapidly becoming one of my favourite bands. This is the third of their singles that I have reviewed so far and every one has been high class. the other two were “That Way” and “Age Of Stupid“. The new one, “Devil’s A Day Away”, was released on January 3rd. It is delightful pop punk with some almost Beach Boyesque harmonies. I know it is still January, but I can see this one featuring on my summer playlist. But it is not just great harmonies, musically it rocks like a motherfucker. Lyrically it might seem a little dark, but I also sense a lot of hope too. On the chorus I was reminded of Semisonic in their prime. The emotion is switched up to 11 too. Everyone needs some Jellybricks in their life. Why not build your music house out of Jellybricks?

Mayhem’s Most Popular Posts – November 2024 December 2, 2024

This is the fifth issue in our fun newish series where we share the latest post with the most views for a given month and the archive post with the most views. This one covers November 2024. The biggest read post was my review of “Age Of Stupid” by the Jellybricks posted on 10th November. The most-read archive post was “Billy liked to peel the labels from his bottle of Bud”, the fourth ever post on this blog, from way back in February 2009. It was an on this day trivia post, just like much of my early stuff and it featured the A Team, Bobby Boris Pickett, Boy George, Captain Pugwash, Ian Dury, Jay Z, Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park, Michael Jackson, the Rolling Stones, Sheryl Crow (obviously given the snippet of lyrics in the post title), and the Smiths. I would like to think that my writing has improved, but I am not so sure!

“Age Of Stupid” – Jellybricks November 10, 2024

Back in the summer, we loved reviewing the “That Way” single by the Jellybricks from Harrisburg, PA. Well, that one was good but the new one, “Age Of Stupid” is even better. Some great power-pop riffs, clever lyrics, and a vocal that draws you in. The chorus reminded me a bit of Green Day at their best. As for the message, after that monumentally stupid election result in the USA last week, this song is not just pertinent and topical it is essential listening for these crazy times! The animated video is damned good too.

“That Way” – The Jellybricks July 15, 2024

The Jellybricks from Harrisburg, PA have a new single out via Wicked Cool Records, it is called “That Way”. The song is an impeccable illustration of perfect power pop. The harmonies and melodies weave their way through an immaculate production. The hooks are top-drawer and mesmerise you until they simply barricade themselves into your brain and refuse to leave. Guitarist/vocalist Bryce Connor says of the track, “‘That Way’ is a song about finding the perfect girl, and the perfect love, and… always wanting it to be exactly that way.” Meanwhile, guitarist/vocalist Larry Kennedy says, “‘That Way’ evolved a little bit through our creative process, starting out with a slightly different chorus than what landed on the record. This is part of the fun of the band working collaboratively with Producer Geoff Sanoff. We keep fine-tuning these songs until we think they are the best they can be, and that means sometimes there are pleasant surprises for us in the sound of the end result.” This song is a fine slab of 21st-century rock ‘n’ roll. You need to listen to it right now! How has this band been around for so long without me hearing about them? I need to rectify that by listening to much more from the Jellybricks!
