The Mayhem Charts – June 2025 July 21, 2025

Here is the Mayhem chart for June 2025, rather late (just like last month) I know, but better late than never right? Regular readers know the chart is based on my streaming listening habits. These are gathered over the last month by obscurify.com. My taste in music remains 99% more obscure than the rest of the UK! The chart remains contemporary-ish (but if a classic artist releases something new they might feature in the chart). However, last month’s top three “Legacy” artists were David Bowie, Stevie Wonder and Johnny Nash. Obscurify also suggests the most obscure artists I have listened to for March and they are Liz Davinci, Dead Rat Society and Kindelan. Bowie, Dead Rat Society and Kindelan have retained their positions from last month. Kindelan also appears in this months song chart with “Cigarettes”.

Party Nails the top artist for June. Bruce Springsteen and Getdown Services are the only two acts that remain in the artist chart from last month. Two artists appear both in the artist and the song chart, they are Party Nails, number one in the artist chart and number two in the song chart with “Same Old Song”. The second is Molly Rymer number eight in the artist chart and number three in the song chart with “Say The Same (Acoustic)”. HerOrangeCoat makes it to the top of the song chart with “Daytime TV”. 60% of the artist chart is female and the song chart is 100% female! So without further ado here are those charts in full! Click on the Spotify link below to listen to the famous (or infamous) five! Twenty one minutes of great music!

“Say The Same” (The Tasting Menu)- Molly Rymer June 8, 2025

The wonderful and super talented singer songwriter that is Molly Rymer has a new release. It features a couple of different versions of “Say The Same” which was originally included on her ‘All You Can Eat’ EP from October last year. The first is a spacious and stripped back acoustic version in which every emotion is palpable. The lyrics deal with toxic relationships and karma and those deep dark words suit the pared down instrumentation perfectly. This is a live recorded version which was created with the help of the mightily talented Fin Vallance.

The second take was recorded live at Mollie’s inaugural headline show at Oporto in Leeds last year. Sadly I was unable to make that gig. At its very essence “Say The Same” is a beautifully constructed pop song with some delicious folk overtones. This was Molly with a full band made up of Angus Bates on drums, Joe Wilkes on double bass, Luca Vitale on cello Sam Cooper and Gabbie Clarke supplying backing vocals. Overlaying it all is Molly’s ethereal, soulful vocal performance. While the song seems dark from a lyrical perspective Molly really seems to be enjoying performing it. The Tasting Menu collection is rounded of with the track in the form of its original release from last years EP. Get this collection into your life, it really is a bewitching and wonderful collection of takes of a beautiful track.

The Mayhem Charts – October 2024 November 8, 2024

Here is the Mayhem chart for October 2024. Regular and constant readers know that the chart is based on my Spotify listening habits over the last month gathered by obscurify.com. Apparently, my tastes have fallen one point to 97% more obscure than the rest of the UK! The chart remains contemporary-ish (but if a classic artist releases something new they might feature in the chart). However, last month’s top three “Legacy” artists were Suede, Pink Floyd and David Bowie. Obscurify also suggests the most obscure artists I have listened to for October: Liz Davinci, Kindelan, and Birdlands, weirdly exactly the same three artists as September. There is a top ten artists chart and a top 5 songs chart. There is the usual eclectic mix of artists, including three that were in the top ten last month; Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (staying at number 10), Birdlands (moving up one place from 4 to 3) and Delilah Bon (falling from number 1 to number 8). Delilah has been in the artist charts now for eleven consecutive months. Two artists appear in both lists for October Molly Rymer and the act that is number one in the artist chart, cumgirl8! The number one song is “Nobody Else Knows” by Flyght Club. So without further ado here are those charts in full! Click on the Spotify link below to listen to the famous (or infamous) five!

‘All You Can Eat’ EP – Molly Rymer October 20, 2024

Leeds singer-songwriter Molly Rymer has just released her EP ‘All You Can Eat’ and it is stunning, with six perfectly formed songs. An all-you-can-eat buffet means for one price you can eat as much as you like and trust me you will want to consume this beautiful musical buffet again and again. Kicking off with the sad and melancholy “Cowards And Heroes” a song which reminded me lyrically of some of the complex, emotional songs that George Michael wrote. Songs like “Older” and “Jesus To A Child”. Many of Molly’s songs deal in raw, passionate, and poignant tales of life and relationships, and the effortless, grace of “Something That Survives” epitomises that talent. There is an underlying jazz feel to “Say The Same” which is an upbeat tune with what feels like some deep and dark lyrics.

“Sleeptalking” showcases Molly’s wonderful confessional style of writing and performing. It is a delicate and gorgeous song in which her voice is the star, floating across the music like an angel’s wings. She has a soulful style and it feels like she is singing just for you. It feels almost fully formed, but “Just A Kiss” is a demo. It is just Molly using her voice and acoustic guitar with some exquisite multi-tracked harmonies. The sadness seeps through the notes and chords on this one. The EP closes with “Two Years This May” which is probably my favourite track on the EP. Everything is perfect; voice, music, and performance, and Molly delivers it with impassioned and expressive soulfulness. I have played the whole EP at least three times in 24 hours and it will get many more plays in the coming weeks and months. I was lucky enough to interview Molly in July, click here to listen.

“Twenty-Five” – Molly Rymer September 6, 2024

Molly Rymer’s new single is all about being 25, I think I can just about remember that age. But Molly’s lyrics woven around a gorgeous tune evoke so many feelings of becoming an adult and being on that precipice just beyond youth. At times her delivery reminded me of a young Joni Mitchell. Listening to “Twenty-Five” late at night with a chilled glass of wine made me feel high on happiness and incredibly chilled. Molly oozes talent and this gorgeousnew song strengthens that view!
