“Additional Animals” – LAPTOP August 29, 2025

Jesse Hartman who had a very successful time with his alt-pop project LAPTOP in the early part of this century releasing three classy albums; ‘Opening Credits’ (2000), ‘The Old Me vs. The New You’ (2001), and ‘Don’t Try This At Home’ (2003). I have been listening to those collections again and they have aged very well. Hartman is now working on a fourth LAPTOP album, ‘On This Planet’, with his son Charlie Hartman. The first results are “Weirder” released back in May and new single “Additional Animals”. It is a dark pop masterpiece about extinction, meat and the human urge for more. It has the classic LAPTOP alt-pop synth sound with some funky horns and was that some mandolin I heard too? The single was mixed by Mario McNulty who has worked with David Bowie, Prince, Nine Inch Nails, Laurie Anderson and Julian Lennon to name just a few. LAPTOP will be opening for UK indie darlings Cast in New York in September.

Jesse Hartman said this of the song “This song is about the human appetite — for meat, for more, for everything — and how that hunger’s eating us alive. It’s a song about extinction that you can dance to. The lyrics are a little more connected to the moment than usual for me — our failing planet, our endless consumption — but it’s still wrapped in this shimmering, international pop packaging. We tracked the song in hip Valencia, added harmonies and Caribbean instruments in Nevis, and finished it in our hood in New York. It’s a global pop fever dream about survival, meat, and the slightly hilarious fact that humans always want just a little more.” Lyrically it is pure brilliance. I love the lines that essentially deal with the demise of meat “Maybe cloning with help. Biotech can help. Another planet can help? Maybe god can help?” I love that it invokes such a range of things from biotech to god! Based on the two singles so far the new album is shaping up to be damned good!

Jesse directed the songs video and it is rather splendid! It was filmed during a surreal family summer in Valencia and features Jesse, Charlie and Jesse’s daughter Lulu. Jesse had this to say about the film. “It stars me, my kids, our percussionist Mike (who used to play with Brian Eno), and our Nevis family singer Denise. It’s chaotic and colorful and oddly hopeful — like maybe we’re not the last animals standing“. Watch the film, stream/ download/ buy the track, just do what you can to have this song in your life!

“Dancing With Ghosts” – Pink Turns Blue February 9, 2025

Pink Turns Blue are a classy European band who took their name from a Hüsker Dü song. They have been around a long while and they have just released the third single, “Dancing With Ghosts”, from their forthcoming album ‘Black Swan’. The album is slated for release on 28th February. The song has dark overtones reminiscent of Joy Division and a real goth feel in the chorus. The chorus seeps into your head like an unseen gas, then it stays there as you become one with the song. It is a song that is as close to perfect as it is possible to get. I love it. The lyrics deal with toxic relationships and the ‘ghosts’ that remain, in some cases long after the relationship is over.

The band consists of Mic Jogwer (vocals, guitar), Paul Richter (drums) and Luca Sammuri (bass). The band began in a still separated Germany towards the end of the Cold War and say they have been inspired by the likes of the Chameleons, Joy Division and goth music. Singer Mic Jogwer said this of the new single. “An exclamation to escape a complicated relationship, “Dancing With Ghosts” is a song about our difficulty of breaking out of an unhealthy bond. Some last a lifetime – and are not good for us at all. They suck all our energy, never give, always take. And whatever we do, it’s never right and never good enough. And since it’s often our best friend, mother, or sister, it feels like we owe them something, but every time we try to do something good for them, we just feel miserable and used. There is no easy way out, because whatever we do, we lose. These spirits will haunt us forever unless we challenge them and eventually manage to leave them behind. We’re Dancing With Ghosts.” I have no idea how I have not come across this great band before. But I will definitely be checking out their back catalogue in the coming weeks!

They have an extensive run of dates in 2025 in Germany, Belgium, the USA and the UK. If you can get to one of them, I reckon you should!

“The Shot” – The Giraffes August 19, 2024

Brooklyn rock band the Giraffes have recently released a new single, “The Shot”, a precursor to their upcoming album (their eighth), ‘Cigarette’, scheduled for September 27th. The band says the album will be “a score for our current age of decay and disappointment, fear and fury, idiocy and hope”. “The Shot” is dark and brooding with some monstrous hooks and a kind of punky jazz feel. It has the sound of a band that really knows their stuff, but they have been around just shy of 30 years. After hearing this single I am really looking forward to the album!

“Waiting For The Britpop Revival” – Fran Ashcroft February 6, 2024

Fran Ashcroft is a producer who has worked with some great artists including Damon Albarn. He has just released a single taken from his forthcoming sophomore album, ‘The Songs That Never Were’. It is called “Waiting For The Britpop Revival” and it is a truly original piece of work with overtones of ‘Hunky Dory’ era David Bowie and Pulp in their full pomp mid-90s phase. It has a simple pop psychedelia style and a chorus that simply won’t let you go. It has been on repeat tonight here at Mayhem Towers! It even comes with a B-Side which is a mostly spoken-word history of the song’s origins. The lyrics are bloody hilarious, take the Oasis line for example, “don’t talk to me about Oasis, that’s a shit band name if there ever was one.” I bloody love this song, but seriously we really don’t need a Britpop revival, do we?

“Airhead” – KMFDM January 26, 2024

KMFDM are lining up their 23rd studio album, ‘Let Go’ for release and they are most definitely not stale. The new single “Airhead” comes just days after the previous one “Let Go”. It has a fabulous 80s and 90s rock vibe which reminded me of both Joan Jett and Garbage. If the rest of the album is as good as these two tracks it will be very special indeed. KMFDM was originally named Kein Mehrheit Für Die Mitleid, which was loosely translated by the band as “no pity for the majority” They are a multinational industrial rock band from Hamburg led by Sascha Konietzko, who founded the band in 1984 as a performance art project in Paris. The current line-up includes Sascha “Käpt’n K” Konietzko (on Bass, Beats, Synths & Vocals), Lucia Cifarelli (on vox), Andy Selway (Drums) and Andee Blacksugar (Guitars). Lucia provides the voice on “Airhead” and gives it her best Shirley Manson. This is a great single and I am most definitely looking forward to the album! The video is a splendid journey down memory lane and so are the lyrics, especially the opening lines, “Born the year of the Chia pet – Blondes were in, but I’m brunette – Vietnam and Donkey Kong – I was busy getting high with Cheech & Chong.” Check out this fabulous song, you will love it, I certainly do!
