Here is the Mayhem chart for March 2024. Regular readers know that the chart is based on my Spotify listening habits over the last month. The chart remains contemporary-ish, rather than just an oldies chart However, the top three “Legacy” artists are Kate Bush, David Bowie, and Steve Harley/ Cockney Rebel. David Bowie returns to the chart after missing out for three months. Obscurify also suggests the most obscure artists I have listened to and for March those are Liz Davinci, The Apocalypse Disco and The Chinaskis. There is a top ten artists chart and a top 5 songs chart. There is the usual eclectic mix of artists, including four that were in the top ten last month (Crawlers, Bambi Thug, Delilah Bon, and Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes). Four of the artists in the artist’s chart also appear in the song’s chart. Delilah Bon has been in the artist charts for four consecutive months and now she tops the song chart with the mighty “Maverick”. Drunk Mums crash straight to the top of the artist chart! Steve Harley (1951 – 2024) R.I.P. March 17, 2024

I remember reading towards the end of last year that Steve Harley was receiving treatment for a nasty form of cancer. But I was still saddened to hear that he passed away this weekend. His musical career started with playing folk clubs and peaked with the huge success of his iconic 70s band Cockney Rebel. It always bugs me when journalists refer to Cockney Rebel as a glam rock band, they were so much more than that. They had their first success at the tail end of the glam period with the non-album single “Judy Teen” hitting number 5 in the UK charts in 1974. “Sebastian” from the first Cockney Rebel album ‘The Human Menagerie’ reached number two in the charts in the Netherlands and Belgium the previous year. Harley was incredibly diverse in his music, which I loved about what he did. ‘The Psychomodo’ from 1974 remains one of my favourite albums of all time and one of the few albums I ever skip a track on, even in the age of streaming. The pinnacle, and the song that most people will remember Steve Harley for is most likely “Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)” which made it to the top of the UK charts and the Irish charts in 1975. I saw Cockney Rebel a couple of times in the 1970s and I saw Steve play live a few times since then, the last time was in 2010. The music world has lost a huge talent in Steve Harley. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and fans across the globe. R.I.P Steve Harley.

“Can you ignore my faith in everything?” October 20, 2013

Clarke Peters-JLG-000350

Did you know that one of the backing vocalists on Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel‘s only UK number one was Clarke Peters who played Lester Freamon in the Wire?The song in question is “Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)” which reached the top of the UK charts  in 1975. The song also reached number one in Ireland and Australia. The lyrics are in fact a vitriolic attack on former band members who Harley felt had abandoned Cockney Rebel. The song is still one of my favourites although I would recommend never listening to Duran Duran’s cover version. In my opinion they murdered it!
