Wow That’s What I Call Mayhem – Volume 7 June 24, 2025

I repeat my humblest of apologies to the creators of the iconic NOW music compilation series of tri-annual releases. Their compilations began in 1983. I posted and compiled the first WOW That’s What I Call Mayhem collection back in March 2024. Volumes 2, 3 and 4 followed in August and September. Volume 5 was was issued in January this year with Volume 6 appearing very soon after in February! So after a few months wait you must be ready for volume 7, right? I certainly hope so, because here it is! This includes the third 20 singles we reviewed in 2025 in another wonderfully maniacal eclectic playlist for your listening pleasure! With 76 minutes of music, click the Spotify link below and lose yourself in the music!

The Mayhem Charts – March 2025 April 8, 2025

Here is the Mayhem chart for March 2025. Regular readers know the chart is based on my streaming listening habits. These are gathered over the last month by obscurify.com. My taste in music remains 99% more obscure than the rest of the UK! The chart remains contemporary-ish (but if a classic artist releases something new they might feature in the chart). However, last month’s top three “Legacy” artists were David Bowie, Elvis Costello and Jackson Browne. Obscurify also suggests the most obscure artists I have listened to for March and they are Liz Davinci, Abraskadabra and Kindelan.

Winnetka Bowling League are the top artist for March and their single “This Is Life” hits number 4 in the song chart . Only one artist in the artist chart remains from last month and that is Antony Szmierek. Two of my all time favourite artists are in the artist chart Frank Turner at number two and Millie Manders and the Shutup at number three. The incredible Erotic Secrets Of Pompeii hit the top of the song chart with the stunning track “Speak Medieval”. So without further ado here are those charts in full! Click on the Spotify link below to listen to the famous (or infamous) five! Nearly eighteen minutes of great music!

“This Is Life” – Winnetka Bowling League March 16, 2025

Los Angeles trio Winnetka Bowling League issued a deluxe edition of last years “This Is Life” single recorded with Dawes and Medium Build. This edition features the original song, a live version and an acoustic version. Sadly, the song passed me by last summer, but I am so glad I have found it now. It is a fragile, emotional track which seems to be a stream of consciousness reflection on life. The lyrics are both simple and cleverly complex at the same time. “Like maybe death is time redirected. And hate is just the love we’ve rejected” for me those lines are the work of a genius. Especially as it is in the same song as the line “From being so broke I did sex shit on Craigslist“. The song is a mesmerisingly mellow thought provoking ballad for our times. What does it actually mean? I have no idea, but I suspect it might mean something different to everyone that hears it. I love this song and I will now power my way through Winnetka Bowling League’s back catalogue. I suspect that they may appear in these pages again in the future.

As a footnote, I discovered the band from a post that they made on Instagram about the last show of their recent tour which ended in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. What they said on that post and in the show was “Trump’s tariffs on Canada mean it would cost us 25% to bring our OWN merch / tee shirts back to America tomorrow when the tour ends. We said fuck that and gave it away for free in Halifax. Love you Canada“. So yes as we suspected there are good Americans (Winnetka Bowling Club definitely are!). Not everyone is under the orange thumb of Donold and Sissy SpaceX! Viva la revolution!
