On January 11th 1964, “Louie Louie” by The Kingsmen topped the US Cash Box music chart. For a while, a handful of US radio stations banned the record. They cited indecipherable lyrics as the reason. Rumors suggested these lyrics contained some naughty words. The FBI investigated the song for two years, from February to May 1964. They analysed the song, played it at different speeds, and even had a spy follow the band on tour. The FBI finally concluded that they could find nothing wrong. Click here to read the rather extensive FBI document about the song.

The song was written and composed by American musician Richard Berry in 1955. The song tells a tale, in the first-person of a “lovesick sailor’s lament to a bartender about wanting to get back home to his girl“. The song is widely understood to be one of the most covered rock songs, with more than 1,600 versions registered. The Kingsmen recording of the song is seen by writers, musicians and journalists as the song that all garage rock and punk can be traced back to. That is not bad for a song that cost no more than $50 to record!

On 8th January 1981, Linda Ronstadt made her Broadway debut. She performed alongside Rex Smith and Kevin Kline. They starred in the revival of The Pirates of Penzance, which ran for 787 performances. Linda could clearly tackle any genre; country, rock, folk, pop, swing/ big band and light opera among many other styles. I love her voice, even in opera, which is a genre I am not very fond of!

The Pistols on the day they signed with EMI (6th October 1976)

On 6th January 1977 EMI Records decided that they couldn’t handle the Sex Pistols. The company dropped them from the label and gave them a parting gift of £40,000 to cancel the contract. They were later dropped by A&M before eventually signing with Virgin. The incident did lead to the fabulous punk track “EMI” included on the Pistols first and only album ‘Never Mind The Bollocks Here’s The Sex Pistols’

On January 5th 1991, Iron Maiden went to Number 1 on the UK singles chart. They achieved this with a late period classic, “Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter.” It was the second single from their album ‘No Prayer for the Dying’. It was the lowest selling Number 1 since 1960, with just over 42,000 copies sold in its first week. I wonder how that has changed in these days of greedy bastard streaming companies? Bruce Dickinson originally recorded and released the song as a solo artist. It was for the soundtrack to ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child’.

On This Day The Boss Shared The Bill With A Manic Depressive! January 4, 2025

Bruce Springsteen started a three-night run on 4th January 1974. It was held at Joes’ Place in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. The support band was by Peter Johnson and The Manic Depressives (a local blues influenced band). On the ticket it stated: Due to the energy crisis, most of our outside lights will be shut off. Only one light will remain on. Later that same year Springsteen played another gig in the city and that was attended by journalist Jon Landau. He famously declared Springsteen the “rock and roll future” in his review for the Real Paper.

On 3rd January 1976, Bob Dylan’s song, “Hurricane”, peaked at Number 33 on the Billboard singles chart. This helped to cause enough publicity to eventually get former boxer Reuben ‘Hurricane’ Carter released from jail. The song promoted Carter’s innocence and remains possibly one of Dylan’s angriest songs. A movie about Carter’s life, starring Denzel Washington, was released in 2000.

On 1st January 1959 Johnny Cash played his first free concert for the inmates of San Quentin Prison, California. Nineteen-year-old Merle Haggard was among the audience members. He was serving a 15-year sentence for grand theft auto and armed robbery, but served only three years. Another very important man was born on that very day. Can you guess who? It was me 🙂

This clip is from a show later in 1959
