The Jellybricks from Harrisburg, PA have a new single out via Wicked Cool Records, it is called “That Way”. The song is an impeccable illustration of perfect power pop. The harmonies and melodies weave their way through an immaculate production. The hooks are top-drawer and mesmerise you until they simply barricade themselves into your brain and refuse to leave. Guitarist/vocalist Bryce Connor says of the track, “‘That Way’ is a song about finding the perfect girl, and the perfect love, and… always wanting it to be exactly that way.” Meanwhile, guitarist/vocalist Larry Kennedy says, “‘That Way’ evolved a little bit through our creative process, starting out with a slightly different chorus than what landed on the record. This is part of the fun of the band working collaboratively with Producer Geoff Sanoff. We keep fine-tuning these songs until we think they are the best they can be, and that means sometimes there are pleasant surprises for us in the sound of the end result.” This song is a fine slab of 21st-century rock ‘n’ roll. You need to listen to it right now! How has this band been around for so long without me hearing about them? I need to rectify that by listening to much more from the Jellybricks!

Pale Waves are back with the second single from their forthcoming album ‘Smitten’ which hits the streets, via Dirty Hit, on 20th September. The song is called “Glasgow”, a city which many have sung about including ABBA, The Snuts, Hue & Cry, Aztec Camera, Deacon Blue, Lewis Capaldi, Belle & Sebastian, Jessie Buckley, Mogwai, and many others. But this tune from Pale Waves is up there with the best of them. It is full of gorgeously recorded jangly indie-pop guitars and leaves you with a smile on your face despite the lyrics being a little sad at times. Singer Heather Baron-Gracie says “Glasgow is my favourite from Smitten, it’s about leaving someone because you know it’s no good for either of you anymore. It somehow breaks my heart but also makes me feel euphoric at the same time.” This could easily become a real summer anthem, not just for 2024. Can you imagine the hooks and melodies ringing around festival fields? I certainly can! The band has a tour in support of the album too, check out the picture below for details.

KAROBELA (pronounced ka-ro-bella) has just released their new single “Imposter Syndrome”, it is mighty and magnificent in equal measure. It has metal, pop, emotion, and earth-shattering riffs. The melody and vocal harmonies are heavenly but without the clouds and harps. Lyrically I believe it explores struggling with understanding who you are and having confidence and belief in yourself. The song oozes hope! You can sing to this, dance to it, play air guitar along with it, headbang to it, or simply just listen to it! Do you love great music? Then you will adore Karobela!

Can a quiet Scottish seaside town produce a great musician and great music? The answer is a resounding YES on the evidence of the new single from NATI! The song is called “Heard It All Before” and is a brilliant rocker of a tune. I sense elements of Fleetwood Mac and Heart and above that the magic ingredient is NATI herself. Her voice is powerful and magically infectious. Meanwhile, the guitar sound on this track is magnificent. The bass riff is stunning throughout and drives the song like the fine purr of a finely tuned Rolls Royce. Lyrically I believe the song is about not standing for excuses and associated crap in a relationship, taking back control. As a pointer to her new EP, this song suggests that the future will be very bright for NATI!

I have no idea who Judy Raindrop is, I chanced upon this song on YouTube on a channel called Laughter Tracks. You can also find them on Bandcamp and Spotify. here you will find the classic mentioned in the title of this post, “Everyone Is A Cunt Except Me” by Judy Raindrop alongside other potential (s)hits like “My Man Don’t Flush When He’s Done A Shit” by Gloria True and a very deep love song “My Boyfriend Keeps Stealing My Dildo” by Daisy and the Dolls. All done in an old-school classic pop style. Whoever is behind these wonderful creations I tip my hat to you, I can’t stop laughing, nor can I stop singing the Judy Raindrop song!

If you like your music to sound like metal on steroids then look no further than Aussie rockers LÏVEWÏRE’s new release “Turbo Shark”. This ain’t no “Baby Shark” baby! This is pedal to the metal, burning rubber, flames from the exhaust magnificent metal. It never drops below 100 miles per hour and it is hard to stand up against such a huge riff assault! This is the kind of thrash metal that might possess the ability to actually thrash you to death! Played live I imagine that this song will blow you away, not metaphorically, but literally!

Fox Jackson‘s Spotify profile refers to him as a “London-based funk and soul artist, creating music so you can add more tunes to your baby-making playlist”. His new single is a sultry tune reminiscent of Prince, the Isley Brothers, Craig David, and the Average White Band. It is called “A Sex Demo” and it has a libido-strengthening beat that makes it a perfect addition to anyone’s baby-making playlist. It has a loose laid-back vibe that would pair well with the Isley Brothers’ seductive classic “Between The Sheets”. This track has really grown on me after just a couple of spins. Jackson said that the song ““A Sex Demo” is about spending a night together with someone you love. The day I wrote it I was thinking of the person I was with and how they made me feel so special.” Fox Jackson is worth checking out, go on, you know you want to!!

Millie Manders and the Shutup will release their sophomore album ‘Wake Up, Shut Up, Work’ on 2nd August. They are arguably one of the greatest live acts the UK has ever produced and having seen them four times I can attest to that! Their first album ‘Telling Truths, Breaking Ties’ was an exquisite debut, how will the new one compare? Read on to find out! The new album kicks off with “Angry Side” which was issued as a single earlier this year. It stays closer to the band’s root ska punk sound and Millie had this to say about it “I guess, a letter from my teenage self, apologising for being so angry and wanting to burn down the world. I had a lot going on back then and I hid behind bravado a lot. I suppose it’s also me telling my younger self that it’s OK to have been that angry when I went through a bunch of trauma that I couldn’t process well enough to deal with it all. I was a kid.” The song perfectly encapsulates the fiery and purposeful passion that Millie possesses. The next track is “Shut Your Mouth” which showcases how the band can move across so many styles and genres, this is full-on punky metal and no one can do sarcasm, anger, and humour in a lyric as well as Millie can. This was a single last year and the chorus hook stays with you and has you repeating the “shut your mouth” line regularly in your head, well I think it was always in my head, or did I sing out loud at work? There are some sublime punk riffs on “Me Too” that take down the misogyny of the #metoo perpetrators, this song hits the target flawlessly. Lyrics like “Make her feel like she’s the one on trial / They say that she had tempted him / Said; ‘Asking for it, weren’t you though?” are exceptionally brilliant. Despite the song’s titular global movement, in 2024 less than 2% of rape victims in the UK ever get justice in a court. Millie says this of the track “For people who have been raped or abused, I want them to know that they’re not weak and it wasn’t their fault, and even if they didn’t get justice, they’ve been heard.” There is a ska pop punk feel to “Fun Sponge”. I have often used the epithet of energy vampire for people with the ability to suck all the life and fun out of others, now I will be using fun sponge. “Fun Sponge” will be even better in a live show. The instrumentation on “Windows” makes you want to dance crazily around the room, which is what I did. In the verses, Millie shows just how good she is at writing ace lyrics that might also stand up as poetry. There is a supremely well-pulled-together 70s pop-rock vibe on “RIP” which shows just how versatile this astonishingly great band has become. The bass alone is worth the listen.
The opening guitar on “Halloween” draws you in oh so delicately to what is essentially a modern power ballad of lost love. I can imagine this being a real audience pleaser in a live show, a time to get your lighters and phones in the air. Millie’s vocals are tender, emotional, and quite frankly gorgeous on this one. The strings add so much depth to a sublime and magnificent ballad. Live favourite “Rebound” is next and it rocks like an absolute bastard, try and listen to this and not sing along, I bet you can’t! It is a great critique of someone who clearly cannot get over their ex. The simple venom in the lines “Saying you’re over your ex now, ex now. You’re ready to move on to something new’ But they’re all you ever talk about When you’re here with me. Might think I wanna hear about it, But you’re boring me” is simple and so very effective. Fans of the band will know, and love, “One That Got Away” which is simply a song that packs far more punch than Tyson Fury. “Threadbare” keeps the tempo of the album switched to number 11 and this will, I am sure, be a song in which Millie ventures into the crowd at her gigs.
On the classy and punky “Can I Get Off” Millie takes aim at how the mainstream media and so many people in the world have stood by while the Israel Defence Force commits acts against the Palestinian people that are tantamount to genocide. But she doesn’t direct her venomous and righteous rancour only at what is going on in Gaza she talks of Chad, Ethiopia, Congo, China, Sudan, and the refugees that risk their lives to cross the channel. It riles me that so many people have fallen for the “you can’t criticise the Israeli government because it is anti-semitic” line. It is not, I despise what the Israeli government is doing, but I don’t hate Jewish people. In exactly the same way I despise everything about Hamas, but not all Palestinians are Hamas. This conflict has been around for years and did not just begin when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7th last year. Millie takes on the “if you are against Israel you must support Hamas” line head-on in the lyric “Am I siding with Hamas? Are you gonna ask that one again?” I am 100% behind her on this. Millie talks of white fragility and our apparent need to side with aggressors because there is money in weapons, oil, and gold. The UK government is complicit with so much of the world’s oppression and killing, it needs to stop. In the song’s coda, she calls on the “boys in bands” to speak out, rather than be quiet and worry about losing followers. If your followers (and I include mine in that) are too cowardly to say anything while people are being murdered then we don’t fucking need them! Shouting “Fuck The Tories” at gigs is fine, but it isn’t enough. Most people who follow bands probably hate the Tories but are uninformed or scared when it comes to other conflicts in the world. Millie says this of the song, “The Western world is privileged because it has pillaged resources from everyone else in the world. We need to unlearn what we know and recognise the suffering people are going through as a result of our greed. “Can I Get Off? is an outpouring of my frustrations about that“. The album ends with “Pressure” which had me thinking of the Clash, but fronted by Millie Manders. This album will, deservedly, be a contender for album of the year in so many publications.

There haven’t been many good drug-related songs for a while but this new track, “No Calories In Cocaine”, from the Howl And The Hum makes up for that. It rolls along like a white powder-fueled bastard and has some great lines (no pun intended), I love the weird simplicity of “No gluten inside MDMA“. Musically it feels like a lost Waterboys track or something from Mumford and Sons if they were good. Sam Griffiths and his gang are on top form and on this evidence the new album, due out in September, will be bloody good! Yes, on the strength of this track and previous single “Same Mistake Twice” the future looks bright for the Howl And The Hum 2.0. Check out the new song and the sublime beauty of the Howl and the Hum back catalogue!

US pop singer Sophie Truax has a new single called “Too Bad”. Based on this tune and some of her earlier singles she is, I am sure on the verge of becoming not just a pop singer, but a pop star, a huge pop star in fact! The track has a lilting summery beat overlaid with some soothing feathery vocals and is overflowing with delightful pop hooks! Does she sound like anyone else, maybe, but there are no obvious reference points for me. Check out this song and all the other great music she has created! She is also a brilliant puppet creator and TikTok sensation!
