It has been quite a while since our last weird facts post, so here comes number 9. CAT scans only exist because of The Beatles. The initial funding for the research into the tech came because record label EMI was so flush with Beatles money. CAT scan is a medical imaging technique that uses X-rays and a computer to create detailed, cross-sectional images of the inside of the body. In the early 1960s Allan Cormack developed the mathematical theory for CT scanning and performed the first experimental demonstration. Then in 1967 Godfrey Hounsfield began working on the CT project at EMI Central Research Laboratories in London. Both of them later won a Nobel Prize for their groundbreaking work.

This is a bit weird, but more of a strange tale than a weird fact. Nonetheless I think it fits in Mayhem’s weird music facts series. Michael Philip Jagger married Blanca Pérez-Mora Macías on 12th May 1971 in St. Tropez. After the wedding, a tired Bianca left the reception early. She returned to their room for a nap. Hours later, she woke up to a surprise. Keith Moon was abseiling through her sixth-floor window. He was naked except for a pair of novelty glasses. The eyeballs on the glasses bounced around on springs. He also had a pair of women’s knickers on his head. He was probably drugged up to those wacky eyeballs I reckon.

This one is not confirmed as a fact, but is allegedly true. I certainly hope it is. Back in the 1980s Queen’s Freddie Mercury dressed Princess Diana in drag and took her to a gay bar. British actress Cleo Rocos wrote a memoir. According to it, she and Freddie sneaked Princess Diana into the iconic London gay bar Royal Vauxhall Tavern. She wore a leather cap to hide her hair, an army jacket, and dark aviator sunglasses. After a couple of drinks and some fun, they dropped her back home at Kensington Palace. Nobody discovered what happened.

Apparently, Susannah Hoffs of the Bangles sang the lead vocal of “Eternal Flame” in the nude after their producer Davitt Sigerson told her that Olivia Newton-John always recorded like that. Sigerson was pranking her, although Hoffs did surround herself with screens before undressing. There is no evidence to suggest that Olivia Newton-John ever recorded in her birthday suit! Hoffs said this of the experience “I imagined it would feel like skinny dipping—vulnerable yet freeing – and I decided to try it. Nobody could see me; there was a baffle in front of me and it was dark.” She liked the experience enough to sing all her vocals on the album, ‘Everything’, that way. Clearly, the naked recording process helped though, because “Eternal Flame” went to number one in nine countries!

David John Harman, who later became Dave Dee of Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick, and Tich fame was a police constable in 1960. He was one of the first people on the scene of the April 1960 car crash that resulted in the death of American rock and roller Eddie Cochran and a very serious injury to Gene Vincent. He later explained that he began learning to play the guitar using Cochran’s impounded Gretsch guitar over several nights at the police station. Dee joined Cochran in the great gig in the sky in 2009. To remember them here are a couple of videos.

Don’t ever let it be said that Mayhem never does highbrow stuff! In the fourth weird music facts post we have a fact about the late great composer Richard Wagner. Apparently, he used to preserve his own nose hair clippings for posterity. Judging by the picture above it appears that he did perhaps clip regularly and kept a very well-trimmed nose bush!

The character of Chris Partridge the drummer in The Partridge Family TV show from 1971 to 1974 was played by Brian Forster. Brian is the great-great-great-grandson of Charles Dickens and the Grandson of Alan Napier (who played Alfred the Butler from the 1960s Batman TV show). After leaving the show Forster became a racing car driver. Brian’s dad was actor Peter Forster who played many roles, the one I remember most is his appearance as the Cardinal in the 1971 film ‘Escape From Planet Of The Apes.’

The toilet queue at the Woodstick Festival

Apparently, termites will eat wood two times faster when listening to rock music. This is based on a study done in Florida in 1968. While it was discovered they ate wood faster it was also found that they abandoned social responsibilities like taking care of the queen. The behaviour would most likely endanger the colony because the termites neglected their other duties as workers. I wonder if they react differently to different genres. Maybe slower for ballads and super fast to thrash metal? If any scientists or termite experts are reading this, although my stuff is quite low-brow, so I doubt it, please tell me more!

The Proclaimers search for the young soul rebels in their own way!

Here comes the first in a new, occasional series from Mayhem, Weird Music Facts. We are kicking off with a story that links the Proclaimers to Dexys Midnight Runners! Apparently, the Proclaimers’ early demos to record labels were funded by Dexys’ Kevin Rowland. (Thanks to Popbitch for this wonderful snippet). A copy of the demo tape that Rowland helped to fund found its way to the then indie darlings the Housemartins who then invited the Proclaimers to support them on their 1986 UK tour.
