HerOrangeCoat has released the second song from her forthcoming EP, ‘Ballads for this Age’. It is called “Ballad 2 (Skin Off My Back)”. It is a divinely dark slice of modern folk. It feels like a deeply personal song and Georgia delivers it with controlled emotion and finesse. This is a majestic and heavenly tune and suggests once again that the EP will be beyond sublime!

Molly Rymer’s new single is all about being 25, I think I can just about remember that age. But Molly’s lyrics woven around a gorgeous tune evoke so many feelings of becoming an adult and being on that precipice just beyond youth. At times her delivery reminded me of a young Joni Mitchell. Listening to “Twenty-Five” late at night with a chilled glass of wine made me feel high on happiness and incredibly chilled. Molly oozes talent and this gorgeousnew song strengthens that view!

Here comes the next entry in Mayhem’s Parental Advisory Playlist (The Tipper Gore Mix). The twelfth song. It is sometimes hard to shake off a great earworm of a song even if that song drops regular F-bombs and other profanities. The new addition to the playlist is Oasis with “Fuckin’ In The Bushes” from the ‘Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants’ album. I bet that you regular readers never thought that I would post anything nice about Oasis, right. Well, I say nice, but I love this because it doesn’t feature Liam’s winy vocal and is probably one of the only true rock tracks the band ever recorded. Click here to check it out!

Here is the Mayhem chart for August 2024. Regular and constant readers know that the chart is based on my Spotify listening habits over the last month gathered by obscurify.com. Apparently, my tastes have risen slightly to 96% more obscure than the rest of the UK! The chart remains contemporary-ish (but if a classic artist releases something new they might feature in the chart). However, last month’s top three “Legacy” artists were David Bowie, Bikini Kill, and Stevie Wonder. Obscurify also suggests the most obscure artists I have listened to for August and those were Liz Davinci, Kindelan, and Modern Marriage. There is a top ten artists chart and a top 5 songs chart. There is the usual eclectic mix of artists, including just one that was in the top ten last month, Delilah Bon! Delilah has been in the artist charts now for nine consecutive months. The only artist to appear in both lists for July is, you guessed it, Delilah Bon! The number one song is “Nureyev Said It Best” by the mighty Avalanche Party. So without further ado here are those charts in full! Click here for the Spotify song playlist.
Mayhem Artist Chart August 2024
1 PJ Harvey 2 Frank Turner 3 Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds 4 Modern Marriage 5 Mothica 6 El Pony Pisador 7 Ravyn Lenae 8 Bambi Thug 9 Delilah Bon 10 Yes Ma’am
1 Nureyev Said It Best – Avalanche Party 2 Ballad 1 (Sorry) – HerOrangeCoat 3 Two Sips – Revivalry 4 Everything I Hate About You – NOANNE 5 Volatile – Delilah Bon

This is the second in our new series where we share the newest post with the most views for a given month and the archive post with the most views. This one covers August 2024. The biggest read post remains “Everyone Is A C*nt Except Me” – Judy Raindrop (Laughter Tracks)” posted in July. 370 views in July and 225 in August, a total of 595! The most-read archive post has been “And I didn’t mean to hurt you, but I know that in the game of love you reap what you sow” from 2011. It was a dig at the crap pumped out by X Factor and a big up for Rose Royce! It had 300 views in August and now sits at 852 in total. I really have no idea why there is so much traffic on that archive post!

I know that the last entry was just a few days ago, but the 27th song in the Play It Again Mayhem series is with us. It is “The Tide Is Turning (After Live Aid)” by Roger Waters. It was the third single from his solo album ‘Radio K.A.O.S’. I think this is possibly the most positive song that Waters has ever written. To buck the trend of 70s songs this one is from the 80s, the second from that decade in this playlist. Apparently, Roger offered his services to Bob Geldof for Live Aid in 1985 but was turned down. After being asked by his record label to offer a more positive and upbeat end to ‘Radio K.A.O.S’ Waters wrote: “The Tide Is Turning (After Live Aid)”. It makes me feel inspired and happy with every listen. Sadly it only made number 54 on the UK Chart.
I don’t often do this but I have copied Roger Waters’ lyrics for the song below, the music and lyrics always heighten my emotions, how about you? The moment when the choir kicks in gets me every time. Did the tide turn in 1987, sadly not, will it turn one day? I hope so. Check out the previous entries along with this new one in the Play It Again Mayhem Spotify Playlist click here to take a listen! What do you think of this track?
Lyrics by Roger Waters
I used to think the world was flat Rarely threw my hat into the crowd I felt I had used up my quota of yearning Used to look in on the children at night In the glow of their Donald Duck light And frighten myself with the thought of my little ones burning But, oh, oh, oh, the tide is turning The tide is turning Satellite buzzing through the endless night Exclusive to moonshots and world title fights Jesus Christ imagine what it must be earning Who is the strongest Who is the best Who holds the aces The East Or the West This is the crap our children are learning But oh, oh, oh, the tide is turning The tide is turning Oh, oh, oh, the tide is turning Now the satellite’s confused ‘Cause on Saturday night The airwaves were full of compassion and light And his silicon heart warmed To the sight of a billion candles burning Oo, oo, oo, the tide is turning Oo, oo, oo, the tide is turning The tide is turning Billy I’m not saying that the battle is won But on Saturday night all those kids in the sun Wrested technology’s sword from the hand of the war lords Oh, oh, oh, the tide is turning The tide is turning Sylvester The tide is turning “That’s it! Now the past is over but you are not alone Together we’ll fight Sylvester Stallone We will not be dragged down in his South China Sea Of macho bullshit and mediocrity”

After a five-year hiatus, Welsh rockers ALFFA return with a hard-as-nails heavy punky anthem called “Breathe Free.” The song is all about inner strength. dealing with your deepest emotions and accepting who you are. ALFFA are Dion Wyn Jones (Guitar and vocals) and Sion Eifion Land (drummer) and this is what they said about “Breathe Free”, “This song invites you on a journey of self-discovery, reminding us all that embracing and celebrating our true selves is the key to true freedom. “Breathe Free” is not just a song for us; it’s a call to break free from internal struggles and celebrate the power within“. This is a band I would love to see live!

On August 28th, 1968, Tammy Wynette recorded “Stand By Your Man” at Epic Studios. It took just 15 minutes to finish and became Wynette’s signature song. It was co-written with producer Billy Sherrill and was the title track of Tammy’s 1969 album. It has been a staple of films for many years featuring in ‘and would be featured over the decades in films like ‘Five Easy Pieces’, ‘Four Weddings And A Funeral’, ‘The Crying Game’, and ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ to name just a few. Interestingly I think Tammy was on her fourth husband when she wrote the song.
On 28th August 1972, the artist formerly known as Vincent Furnier, Alice Cooper was Number One on the UK singles chart with “School’s Out”. He has said he was inspired to write the song when answering the question, “What’s the greatest three minutes of your life?”. His answer was “There’s two times during the year. One is Christmas morning, the next one is the last three minutes of the last day of school.“

NOANNE has launched a spellbinding rocker of a single. It is called “Everything I Hate About You” It has a mesmerising guitar riff that seems to conceal an inner darkness. It has emotion and passion, and the sound haunts you long after the song is over. The song is about a woman who has taken drastic measures against a deceitful lover. The lyrics are full of anger, bitter resentment and strangely love too. NOANNE is from Prague and this is what she had to say about the song. “I wanted to create a track that not only captured the visceral energy of rock ‘n’ roll but also conveyed a deep, emotional narrative and reflect the intense feelings I was experiencing at the time of writing the single—anger, frustration, and a touch of ironic humor. The result is a track that is raw and dynamic, yet filled with lyrical depth. It’s a sonic journey that mirrors the tumultuous relationship described in the song, taking listeners from the peak of rage to the depths of introspection. This blend of high-energy rock with thoughtful storytelling is something I hope resonates deeply with my audience.” The video is a magnificent slice of film noir that fits the tune perfectly. NOANNE takes some of her inspiration from Led Zeppelin and David Bowie. There is nothing not to love about “Everything I Hate About You”!

Hello, again it’s me, Buffy Frobisher Smythe Esquire – Butcher Of Rock Deities. Finally, I have been freed from my dungeon, by Billy Mayhem, to butcher and burn another of rock music’s sacred cows after my fearful barbecuing of the Beatles just over a year ago. Mayhem only released me after I agreed to this new assignment, he wants me to butcher and burn a rather poor Beatles tribute act from Burnage. I mean come on, Oasis are hardly sacred cows, are they? More like sacred cow pats! They produced skimmed milk music when everyone else put out full-cream Jersey milk music. So many fans of these so-called “Brit Pop heavyweights” (don’t make me laugh) say that their first two albums, ‘Definitely Maybe’ and ‘(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?’ are great. But are they really? I suppose that compared to the substandard shite they followed they are probably the greatest two Oasis albums, but the competition wasn’t very strong.
If they hadn’t had regular rucks at gigs and on ferries, the Gallagher brothers would probably only be featured in those “Where are they now” magazine articles these days. But they are not, their fans ever them as deities. Oi, you with the bucket hat, God doesn’t exist, and if she did, she wouldn’t be Oasis! Noel’s best songs were all rip-offs from the Beatles, and let’s face it that scouse beat band was shite too. Even the name Oasis is so fucking dull, imagine being named after a leisure centre in Swindon. Between 1994 and 2008 Oasis had seven UK number-one albums and 19 UK top 5 singles (including 8 fucking number ones, most of which sounded like huge piles of number 2s), bloody hell bought some crap in that period didn’t they?
There must be good odds of this happening next year!
Then there was Knebworth in 1996, who did they pay to pull that one off? That must be the first time a poor tribute act has ever headlined that iconic venue, not the last though, Liam Gallagher did it in 2022 with his tribute of a tribute act. They broke up in 2016 and we all gave a huge cheer, ok so maybe not the die-hard fans, but everyone else did, right? Now they have announced a reunion with the comment “The guns have fallen silent. The stars have aligned. The great wait is over. Come see. It will not be televised.” Guns, stars? Seriously give your head a swivel boys. But the good news is that it won’t be on television! Other than Noel and Liam will any other original members of Oasis actually be in the reunited band? I doubt it. Did they do this because they have unfinished musical business? Of course not, they are obviously doing it for the money. Tickets will no doubt cost enough to require a mortgage and all to watch some old bloke in a duffel coat stood at the front of the stage with his hands behind his back. Someone recently posted on Twitter, (we are never calling X you absolute fucking Moron Musk!), about fans of bands with no sense of humour. The top five were 1) Stone Roses, 2) New Order, 3) Oasis, 4) The Smiths and 5) Joy Division. Personally, I think Oasis fans should be number one on the list. Go on Oasis fans, prove to me that you do have a sense of humour! 😉
The Brits have always been a bit shit haven’t they?
