The Mayhem Charts – June 2024 July 11, 2024

Here is the Mayhem chart for June 2024, albeit a tad late. Regular and constant readers know that the chart is based on my Spotify listening habits over the last month gathered by obscurify.com. Apparently, my tastes have fallen to 96% more obscure than the rest of the UK! A drop of 2% from last month. The chart remains contemporary-ish (but if a classic artist releases something new they might feature in the chart). However, the top three “Legacy” artists for last month are David Bowie, Sparks, and R.E.M. Obscurify also suggests the most obscure artists I have listened to and for June those were Hawksley Workman, Jenny Don’t And The Spurs, and The German Art Students. There is a top ten artists chart and a top 5 songs chart. There is the usual eclectic mix of artists, including three that were in the top ten last month, Taylor Swift, Paul Weller, and Delilah Bon! Delilah is one of only two artists to feature in the artist chart and the song chart for June, with her current single “The Internet” making it to the top of the song chart and May’s number one “Evil, Hate Filled Female” falling to number 5. Delilah has been in the artist charts for seven consecutive months. The other artist to appear in both lists for June is Kate Nash, who also tops the artist chart. Female artists make up 50% of the artist chart and 80% of the song chart! So without further ado here are those charts in full! Click on the header of the song chart for the playlist on Spotify.

‘Wake Up, Shut Up, Work’ – Millie Manders and the Shutup July 2, 2024

Millie Manders and the Shutup will release their sophomore album ‘Wake Up, Shut Up, Work’ on 2nd August. They are arguably one of the greatest live acts the UK has ever produced and having seen them four times I can attest to that! Their first album ‘Telling Truths, Breaking Ties’ was an exquisite debut, how will the new one compare? Read on to find out! The new album kicks off with “Angry Side” which was issued as a single earlier this year. It stays closer to the band’s root ska punk sound and Millie had this to say about it “I guess, a letter from my teenage self, apologising for being so angry and wanting to burn down the world. I had a lot going on back then and I hid behind bravado a lot. I suppose it’s also me telling my younger self that it’s OK to have been that angry when I went through a bunch of trauma that I couldn’t process well enough to deal with it all. I was a kid.” The song perfectly encapsulates the fiery and purposeful passion that Millie possesses. The next track is “Shut Your Mouth” which showcases how the band can move across so many styles and genres, this is full-on punky metal and no one can do sarcasm, anger, and humour in a lyric as well as Millie can. This was a single last year and the chorus hook stays with you and has you repeating the “shut your mouth” line regularly in your head, well I think it was always in my head, or did I sing out loud at work? There are some sublime punk riffs on “Me Too” that take down the misogyny of the #metoo perpetrators, this song hits the target flawlessly. Lyrics like “Make her feel like she’s the one on trial / They say that she had tempted him / Said; ‘Asking for it, weren’t you though?” are exceptionally brilliant. Despite the song’s titular global movement, in 2024 less than 2% of rape victims in the UK ever get justice in a court. Millie says this of the track “For people who have been raped or abused, I want them to know that they’re not weak and it wasn’t their fault, and even if they didn’t get justice, they’ve been heard.” There is a ska pop punk feel to “Fun Sponge”. I have often used the epithet of energy vampire for people with the ability to suck all the life and fun out of others, now I will be using fun sponge. “Fun Sponge” will be even better in a live show. The instrumentation on “Windows” makes you want to dance crazily around the room, which is what I did. In the verses, Millie shows just how good she is at writing ace lyrics that might also stand up as poetry. There is a supremely well-pulled-together 70s pop-rock vibe on “RIP” which shows just how versatile this astonishingly great band has become. The bass alone is worth the listen.

The opening guitar on “Halloween” draws you in oh so delicately to what is essentially a modern power ballad of lost love. I can imagine this being a real audience pleaser in a live show, a time to get your lighters and phones in the air. Millie’s vocals are tender, emotional, and quite frankly gorgeous on this one. The strings add so much depth to a sublime and magnificent ballad. Live favourite “Rebound” is next and it rocks like an absolute bastard, try and listen to this and not sing along, I bet you can’t! It is a great critique of someone who clearly cannot get over their ex. The simple venom in the lines “Saying you’re over your ex now, ex now. You’re ready to move on to something new’ But they’re all you ever talk about
When you’re here with me. Might think I wanna hear about it, But you’re boring me
” is simple and so very effective. Fans of the band will know, and love, “One That Got Away” which is simply a song that packs far more punch than Tyson Fury. “Threadbare” keeps the tempo of the album switched to number 11 and this will, I am sure, be a song in which Millie ventures into the crowd at her gigs.

On the classy and punky “Can I Get Off” Millie takes aim at how the mainstream media and so many people in the world have stood by while the Israel Defence Force commits acts against the Palestinian people that are tantamount to genocide. But she doesn’t direct her venomous and righteous rancour only at what is going on in Gaza she talks of Chad, Ethiopia, Congo, China, Sudan, and the refugees that risk their lives to cross the channel. It riles me that so many people have fallen for the “you can’t criticise the Israeli government because it is anti-semitic” line. It is not, I despise what the Israeli government is doing, but I don’t hate Jewish people. In exactly the same way I despise everything about Hamas, but not all Palestinians are Hamas. This conflict has been around for years and did not just begin when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7th last year. Millie takes on the “if you are against Israel you must support Hamas” line head-on in the lyric “Am I siding with Hamas? Are you gonna ask that one again?” I am 100% behind her on this. Millie talks of white fragility and our apparent need to side with aggressors because there is money in weapons, oil, and gold. The UK government is complicit with so much of the world’s oppression and killing, it needs to stop. In the song’s coda, she calls on the “boys in bands” to speak out, rather than be quiet and worry about losing followers. If your followers (and I include mine in that) are too cowardly to say anything while people are being murdered then we don’t fucking need them! Shouting “Fuck The Tories” at gigs is fine, but it isn’t enough. Most people who follow bands probably hate the Tories but are uninformed or scared when it comes to other conflicts in the world. Millie says this of the song, “The Western world is privileged because it has pillaged resources from everyone else in the world. We need to unlearn what we know and recognise the suffering people are going through as a result of our greed. “Can I Get Off? is an outpouring of my frustrations about that“. The album ends with “Pressure” which had me thinking of the Clash, but fronted by Millie Manders. This album will, deservedly, be a contender for album of the year in so many publications.

You really need to buy this album and to make it easy for you I have given you eight preorder outlet links below. Click on any of them and get yourself sorted for getting your hands on a brilliant album early next month!

“No Calories In Cocaine” – The Howl And The Hum June 29, 2024

There haven’t been many good drug-related songs for a while but this new track, “No Calories In Cocaine”, from the Howl And The Hum makes up for that. It rolls along like a white powder-fueled bastard and has some great lines (no pun intended), I love the weird simplicity of “No gluten inside MDMA“. Musically it feels like a lost Waterboys track or something from Mumford and Sons if they were good. Sam Griffiths and his gang are on top form and on this evidence the new album, due out in September, will be bloody good! Yes, on the strength of this track and previous single “Same Mistake Twice” the future looks bright for the Howl And The Hum 2.0. Check out the new song and the sublime beauty of the Howl and the Hum back catalogue!

“Too Bad” – Sophie Truax

US pop singer Sophie Truax has a new single called “Too Bad”. Based on this tune and some of her earlier singles she is, I am sure on the verge of becoming not just a pop singer, but a pop star, a huge pop star in fact! The track has a lilting summery beat overlaid with some soothing feathery vocals and is overflowing with delightful pop hooks! Does she sound like anyone else, maybe, but there are no obvious reference points for me. Check out this song and all the other great music she has created! She is also a brilliant puppet creator and TikTok sensation!

“My Drummer’s Girlfriend” – ALT BLK ERA June 28, 2024

ALT BLK ERA are going stratospheric with epic headline shows and a support slot with Tom Morello. On top of that, they have fired up the solid fuel boosters and released their best single so far. “My Drummer’s Girlfriend” is full of pop-driven punk licks and a gorgeous vocal delivery which reminds me of the Tuts and Kate Nash. Those riffs are mesmeric and stitch their way into your brain easily. I am not sure I am a fan of the potentially insane, drug-fuelled titular girlfriend in this story, but I am a huge fan of this infectious, electric firecracker of a tune from the magical and magnificent ALT BLK ERA.

“The Internet” – Delilah Bon June 26, 2024

If music could kill sex offenders, abusers, and misogynists then Delilah Bon’s new single “The Internet”, would be a lethal weapon. Delilah has some sharp punk and rap influences but since her arrival, she has developed into one of the most original artists on the planet. This is the fourth single from her forthcoming second album and on those four tracks alone it is a major contender for album of the year. This is a brooding dark beat with the best Delilah ciphers so far. Speaking in the guise of female-hating keyboard warrior Harry Dick Delilah bares her fangs and aims her venom at the vile individuals that spout pathetic and worthless hate. For lines like “All these people offended by transgenders send your children to church to god-loving sex offenders” it is way above the competition and the glorious dig at professional sweaty nonce Prince Andrew is sublime. I love the way that Delilah continues to turn all the shit she takes and uses it to fight back. Good people of the world, Delilah Bon is on your side, be on hers!

“Fading Lights” – Cowgirl

Cowgirl are Danny Trew Barton on vocals and guitar, Sam Coates also on vocals and guitar, Jack Jewers on bass guitar, and Jack Holdstock on drums. This powerhouse of a band recently released a new single, “Fading Lights”, from their forthcoming sophomore album, ‘Cut Offs’. The album will be out on 9th August and like their 2021 debut, it was recorded with Euan Hinshelwood (Cate Le Bon/A. Savage/Devendra Banhart) at Vacant TV studios in London. The single is a gorgeous marriage of garage rock, fabulously fuzzy guitar licks, Velvet Underground vibes, and harmonies that many would kill for. This song will shake up your summer party if you’ll let it. “Fading Lights” is, I believe, the true fiery harbinger of a great album!

Pennine Suite – Fulford Arms – Friday 14th June 2024 June 18, 2024

Tonight was a chance to see a few bands that I hadn’t seen for a while. The headliners were Pennine Suite who I last saw in January 2022. Support was from Fulford Arms Battle Of The Bands 2022 winners the Palava, I last saw them at the BOTB final in December 2022. The first act on stage was the White Roses, I last saw them in February of last year, they are not simply a rock band, they are a truly entertaining band. Each time I see them they get better and better. Vocally Eliie draws on Joan Jett’s rawness and Stevie Nicks’s completeness while Jack’s guitar is a highly original and essential part of the band’s sound. The voice harmonies evoke Fleetwood Mac. “This Town” is a great song, but the anthemic epic that closed the set was extraordinary indeed! They have a new EP due soon and on the strength of this set I reckon it will be a classy release!

The Palava have grown immensely in emotion, scope, skill, and ambition since I last saw them. Their songs have grown into more complex and wonderfully played mini-epics. There were some really great jazzy, punky, and funky licks with great use of some nicely incorporated major 7th chords in some of their tunes. They maintain an infusion of ’60s psychedelia and a pinch of 90s Indie.”Remedy” (which in its recorded version features Kitty VR) and “Lie To Me” were incredible highlights, but even those two Palava specials pale against the next single “Foreign Ground” which sounds like it will be the band’s best song to date. They looked like they were loving playing live, and that just enhanced their performance.

If I was a headliner I would not have fancied following the Palava onto the stage, but Pennine Suite raised their game and blew the fucking house down! They are a band on fire, but not just a little flame, I am talking super nova levels of heat! The set opener “Everything Begins” (what an appropriate song to start with) reminded me of the Cure. The depth of their sound grows with every gig. Louise’s keyboard licks, riffs, and motifs add huge breadth to the band. Her playing on “M.O.W.O” gives an eerie circus-like feel to the song. The new track “Manhattan” is thunderously good and needs to be a single, RIGHT NOW! Harry’s guitar was magnificent on this track and the power and drive from the mighty rhythm section of Moses and Louis is a close to perfect as you could get! The crowd was spontaneously chanting the band’s name four songs into the set. Clearly the crowd fucking love this lot and was in full voice from start to finish. There were plenty of highlights in their twelve-song set, the biggest for me was a pounding “Pass On You”. But even that was surpassed by beyond epic and truly awesome upcoming single “Tropical Fantasy”, when Pennine Suite rock out they do it like a huge bastard rock god. Frontman Nick has grown wonderfully confident over the years since I first saw him fronting the Receivers more than five years ago. He really commands his audience and the new songs are just so good. I am not sure where this thought popped up from but I would love to hear Pennine Suite do a funky cover of a Lou Reed song, maybe “Vicious” from ‘Transformer’. This was a stunning end to a brilliant night of live music.

As a footnote, I went on for a couple more drinks after the gig with Simon P from Northern Radar Promotions and Rusty and Pete from ace York band Lost Trends. Note to self, don’t do it again, and avoid a hangover from hell!

“UNDER” – Ghost Arcadia June 13, 2024

Tags: , , , , , , , ,

London-based four-piece rock band Ghost Arcadia is back in the classy rock groove with their first single in 14 months, “UNDER” which hit the streets last month. It is an emotional-sounding, anthemic song with a huge sound to match the clearly massive ambition it carries. There are titanic guitar riffs, harmonic and guttural vocals from Reuben Beau Davies, and some cinematic synth patterns. This might seem a bit pop driven at times, but underneath it all it is as heavy as fuck! The band spoke about the inspiration for the track “It’s an exploration of the everyday battles we face within ourselves. From addiction to self-doubt, we all face battles at some point in our lives. The song conveys the message that even when you are at your lowest, there is still a way out; there is still a light left to guide you from the “Under”. Sometimes, we must dive into our darkest depths before we can finally find a way out.” The song is a great taster for their new EP ‘What We Become’ which will arrive later this year!
