Day 6 of the With Just A Hint Of Mayhem, mostly, punk themed 12 days of Christmas series and we are halfway through. This is a funky punk outing from the everlasting Toy Dolls. They have been around forever haven’t they? While “Credit Crunch Christmas” came out quite a few years ago, but it is sadly very topical and pertinent in this very, very strange year!

Well we promised you some Christmas surprises, and here is the second of those. This time it’s the turn of ace York band and devoted Leeds United supporters Skylights. Well guitarist Turnbull thanks to social distancing. But I am sure the rest of the band share that sentiment! Check out Turnbull’s Christmas message below. Regular readers will know that I am a big Skylights fan and if you don’t have them in your life yet, now’s your chance. Click here to visit there site where you will find a great collection of videos, music and some pretty tasty merch too 🙂 When gigs come back you really should get yourself down to a Skylights show, it’ll be well worth it!

Comfort And Joy – A Shiny Happy Christmas Compilation

Comfort And Joy – A Shiny Happy Christmas Compilation is a beautiful new compilation of Christmas songs for the 21st century put together by those delightful and delectable elves over at Shiny Happy Records. It features 23 classy bands from across the globe and it really is a compilation that makes you feel good and eases you into a nicely chilled Yuletide spirit. Do I have a favourite track on here? Yes, but it has so far been different every time I have listened to it.

“Winter Time” by Denbaron is like something that might have featured on a Chrimbo version of the NME C-81 collection. The Phantom Handshakes sound like a side project from Clare Grogan at the height of Altered Images fame, and I am a huge fan of Clare, so I mean that in a really good way! Can you imagine an early 80s post punk, slightly pop infused band fronted by Jona Lewie? You can? then I think you will love the 100% feel good vibes of “Snowman” by Tampopo. Are there many great songs about games featured in cartoon series? I have no idea, but “Buy Me Bonestorm (Or Go To Hell)” by Teenage Angst is definitely in that category as I believe it is a song about a violent game that once featured in the Simpsons. If you like your Christmas covers shoegazey and very slightly smiley then the bravely named the Lousy Pop Group with their rather different take on “When Santa Got Stuck Up The Chimney” will definitely be your thing. Incidentally they might be a pop group, but they are not lousy in real life I suspect.

“Working On A Christmas Day” perfectly expresses the gloom I would feel if I had to work on a Christmas day. It also makes me want to hear more from the songs architects, Archaster. If any of the old classic kids TV shows featured an “out there” indie band it would probably be the originally, immaculately and wonderfully named Vegetablets. I can imagine “Christmas Dream” resonating over the closing credits for a Christmas edition of Trumpton. The Death Of Pop’s “Christmas In Suburbia” owes a small debt to Jonathan Richman and Damon Albarn, but it it also sounds very different and original too. There are a few covers on this record and perhaps the finest is a gorgeous lofi take on Wham’s Christmas classic “Last Christmas” by Teen Idles. My second favourite track on this fine collection is “December Girl” by the Suncharms which adds a sublime seasonal stamp to their magnificent chilled indie signatures. Regular readers will definitely be familiar with Suncharms! Currently my favourite song here is “Happy Xmas (Plague Is Over)” by the Fisherman And His Soul. Definitely a song for 2020 and frankly if Yuletide 2020 needed a Christmas compilation it needed this one!

Sadly I don’t have the time or space to mention every song and every artist, but here is the track list and the BandCamp list is below;

  1. The Skating Party – Brothers in Our World
  2. Day & Dream – December
  3. The Suncharms – December Girl
  4. Denbaron – Winter Time
  5. Phantom Handshakes – Winter Is Blue
  6. Red Go Cart – Winter Work
  7. Tampopo – Snowman
  8. Caramel Snow – Put Me On Your Wish List

Probably quite a topical picture for 2020 I reckon!

Day 5 of the With Just A Hint Of Mayhem, mostly, punk themed 12 days of Christmas series and we are getting close to halfway. All my Christmas shopping is done, how about you? None of it is wrapped yet though 🙂 Today’s tune is a great slab of pop punk from MxPx, all the way from Bremerton, Washington in the USA. Time for “Christmas Night Of The Living Dead”!

Day 4 of the With Just A Hint Of Mayhem, mostly, punk themed 12 days of Christmas series. Yuletide is so close now I can almost smell the Turkey and the sprouts and of course the nut roast if you’re veggie! Todays offering is a 1977 track by a band called the Ravers, who I know next to nothing about, with a song called “Punk Rock Christmas”. Apparently a lot of people thought this sounded like the Sex Pistols all those years ago, personally I don’t see it, but a fun tune nonetheless!

The 12 Days Of, Mostly, Punky Christmas – Day 3 December 15, 2020

Another day closer to the annual visit from the bearded weirdy in red and With Just A Hint Of Mayhem continues with a, mostly, punk themed 12 days of Christmas series up until Christmas Eve to take your mind off Covid, Brexshit and anything else that is vexing you! Day 3 brings you Set It Off who formed 12 years ago in Tampa, Florida. This is a rather chirpy ditty, despite the negative title; “This Christmas (I’ll Burn It To The Ground)”

It’s even closer to Chrimbo now and With Just A Hint Of Mayhem continues with a, mostly, punk themed 12 days of Christmas series up until Christmas Eve to take your mind off the mind fuck that 2020 has been! Today it is Fall Out Boy. These Illinois noisemakers and Pop Punk pioneers took there name from a comic in the Simpsons, that earns loads of cool Yule points in my opinion. This is the band with an excellently titled song for Christmas, “Yule Shoot Your Eye Out”. Enjoy!

The 12 Days Of, Mostly, Punky Christmas – Day 1 December 13, 2020

It’s nearly Chrimbo folks and With Just A Hint Of Mayhem is doing a, mostly, punk themed 12 days of Christmas series from now until Christmas Eve to get you all properly ready for Yuletide at the end of perhaps the strangest year in history! Let’s kick off with Bowling For Soup’s take on “Bobby Wants A Puppy Dog For Christmas”. It is a copy of a country Christmas song written by the legendary Merle Haggard. The Wichita Falls punk funsters sound like they are having great fun with this tune, I love it! The cover was originally released on an album called ‘Merry Flippin’ Christmas’ back in 2011. I am already starting to get my Santa groove on with this! Watch out for the next 11 of these cracking tunes and more Christmas surprises from With Just A Hint Of Mayhem!

12 Days To Christmas – Day 12 – Father Christmas December 24, 2017

This is it Christmas Eve, day 12 of my 12 days to Christmas series of posts. The final one that brings you famous people from history featured in a song, obviously they have all been real and today is no exception. I bring you the bearded weirdy, the fat bloke in the red coat, yes old saint Nick or as I prefer to call him, Father Christmas. He is real ok, don’t let anyone hear you say otherwise! Father Christmas first appeared in the 17th century and until the Victorian age he was seen as a symbol of adult merry-making and feasting. It was around then that he became the bearer of yuletide gifts, especially to children. Santa Claus is an American traditional name for the Christmas figure. Father Christmas’ coat was depicted as green, brown and even blue. It was a big advertising campaign by Coca Cola in 1931 that switched to the now far more common red robes. As it’s Christmas I won’t be focusing on any particular artist today, but I have selected a diverse set of Father Christmas and Santa Claus songs. Finally I would like to wish all of my readers a very happy Christmas, or happy holiday, or a happy life, whatever floats your boat. Just be happy! If you would like to track Father Christmas’ progress in your area click here.
