“You can rely on the old man’s money” February 26, 2014

HallandOats“He’s a rich bloke and he’s. gone to far coz he knows it don’t matter anyway”. That doesn’t have the same ring as rich girl does it? But in fact the classic Hall and Oates song “Rich Girl” is actually about a man. In a recent interview in Nashville with TMZ John Oates was asked if the song was about anyone in particular. He said that the song, which was written by Daryl Hall, was about an ex boyfriend of Sara Allen who was Daryl Hall’s girlfriend at the time. The man in question was the spoiled heir of a fast food fortune called Victor Walker; his father owned the Walker Bros. Original Pancake House in Chicago and a number of KFC franchises. Hall just felt that Rich Girl worked better than Rich Guy. Victor knows the song was written about him. I’d like to thank a fabulous Facebook buddy of mine for giving me this story; that’ll be you Samuel Glass Jr!

rich girlSara Allen was clearly an important muse for Daryl hall as she was also the subject of two hall and Oates classics and indeed two of my favourite songs from the duo. Those songs are “Sara Smile” and “Las Vegas Turnaround (The Stewardess Song)”. You probably gathered from the sub-title of the second of those songs that Sara Allen was an Air Stewardess in the 70s. Sara’s sister Janna Allen went on to cowrite songs with Daryl and John, including “Kiss On My List” and “Private Eyes“. sadly she died from leukemia aged just 36 in 1993.

“Here I am on bended knees I lay my heart down at your feet” December 4, 2011

Day 4 of this years advent calendar is upon us and we’re up to D in the ABC of Motown. Todays song is perhaps a little less known than some of the others. It is “Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)” by Frank Wilson. The song became a rare sought after disc on the Northern Soul circuit in the UK. It was originally set to be released in 1965 on Motown’s Soul label in the US. But Wilson decided he would rather be a producer than a singer and supposedly Berry Gordy didn’t rate the vocal very highly.

Only 250 copies were pressed and rumour has it that no more than five of those have survived, including one that is apparently in Berry Gordy’s collection. An original copy sold for more than £25,000 in 2009. Motown reissued the song in 1979 following the interest emanating from Northern Soul clubs. It was reissued again in 2004 after it had been used to (sadly in my opinion) soundtrack a KFC TV advert. Tomorrow is Frank Wilson’s 71st birthday.

“I don’t wanna take no pictures I just wanna take some shots!” November 25, 2010

Did any of you see Will.i.am‘s appearance at the American Music Awards at the weekend? It would be fair to say, well in my opinion anyway, that he looked like a bit of a knob. he was wearing a Lego baseball cap, at the usual hip hop style or indeed chav style jaunty angle. Only it wasn’t really proper Lego was it, because Lego is mostly square and that hat certainly wasn’t square. I wonder what the other Peas thought of it. There was also a great piece in the Guardian about it as well, which actually had the hat dissed by a kid who went on to make his own hat from proper Lego. Click here to read it.

I reckon he must have felt like a bit of a brick (misprint!)

Obviously many other rock stars have worn hats that were somewhat loud; Slash and Jay off of Jamiroquai to name but two. I just felt that Will.i.am’s millinery disaster zone was even worse than one time Guns n Roses member; Buckethead. What did you, dear readers think of it?

I also wonder whether that mild obsession with the Danish plastic toy will lead to worse things for Will.i.am, like Lego Porn, you have been warned!

But back to Will.i.am and the other Black Eyed Peas, have you seen their new video, for the new single “Time(Dirty Bit)”? There is a lot of pixellation that makes them seem somewhat Legoized. See what did I tell you it really will be Lego porn next!
