On This Day School Was Out Forever For Studio 54 February 4, 2024

On 4th February 2024, Alice Cooper (formerly Vincent Furnier) turns 76. The first Alice Cooper album came out when Mr and Mrs Furnier’s son was 21. He had previously released some singles as a teenager in The Spiders (nothing to do with Bowie) and Nazz. On Alice’s 32nd birthday, the iconic New York Disco Studio 54 had to close down following its owners, Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager, being convicted of tax evasion. Schrager eventually received a presidential pardon. The final night, February 4th, 1980, featured performances from Liza Minelli and Diana Ross. The building that housed Studio 54 had originally been designed as an opera house in 1927.

One of my favourite Alice Cooper tracks is one of his lesser known singles which barely scraped into the US top 50 and peaked at number 12 in the UK. It is taken from the 1973 album ‘Muscle Of Love‘ and considering that it was released in 1973 it is to some folk confusingly titled “Teenage Lament ’74”. I used to have the album and the single on vinyl. So why am I telling you this? Well I learnt something about the song this week that I never knew before, or maybe I knew but had forgotten it. Anyway that little trivia nugget is that backing vocals on “Teenage Lament ’74” were provided by Liza Minelli.
