With Just A Hint Of Mayhem

Music reviews, gig reviews, fun trivia and extra added random stuff!

Gene – Network, Sheffield – Thursday 2nd October 2025 October 16, 2025

When did music become a nostalgia fest? Probably sometime in the last 40 years birthed by Live Aid I guess. Now we are presented with opportunities to celebrate the anniversaries of classic albums on a regular basis. Usually 10 years, 20 years, 25 years, 30 years, 50 years and more. Then there is the cash in of former huge bands coming back together to squeeze every last drop out of their fan base, often with that most ridiculous development of dynamic ticket pricing. Yes I’m speaking to you Oasis. The press, radio, TV and social media are full of these anniversaries and reunions and it seems there is no slow down in the frequency. But while a part of me finds the whole nostalgia worship thing a little crass I am a part of it and I am one of those people that will purchase anniversary album releases and box sets from my favourite artists, notably David Bowie. (More of him later!)and the occasional reunion tour ticket. Not Oasis, but definitely Gene, who are my favourite 90s band. I never expected them to get back together but I was excited when thy did and I simply had to get a ticket! I finally managed to get one for the Sheffield show, the second gig of their reunion shows. So yes, in spite of my negativity and misgivings I am well and truly on board the nostalgia train!

The evening was opened by a wonderfully skilled and chilled set from two members of Danny and the Champions of the World, billed as Champs Acoustic Duo. Their short set warmed up the crowd perfectly. The highlight for me was “(Never Stop Building) That Old Space Rocket”. When Matt, Kev, Steve and Martin took the stage it was almost as if they had never been away. The keyboard player was none other than the Style Council’s keys maestro Mick Talbot. They opened with a thumping singalong “London, Can You Wait” from their first album, followed swiftly by 1994 single “Be My Light, Be My Guide”. Two songs in and the crowd was lapping it up. The energy stepped up even more for a monumental take on “We Could Be Kings” a 1997 UK top 20 hit. Experiencing Gene in a live environment again made me remember just how many great songs they had. The pre encores set was a stonking nineteen songs with many, many highlights. That part of the set closed with a towering triptych of “Haunted By You”, “Olympian” and “For The Dead”. By this time it seemed that the whole crowd were emotionally drained, it had been a special night, but did we have the passion for more, of course we did!

The band returned for two three song encores the first was a monumentally powerful trio of songs that kick arse on a good day, here they kicked the planet’s arse! Those three tunes were “You’ll Never Walk Again”, “Sick, Sober And Sorry” and a tumultuous “Fighting Fit”. Encore two was very slightly more subdued kicking off with “I Can’t Help Myself”, followed by “Somewhere In The World”. But what a perfect choice the final song was, “Who Said This Was The End?” I sincerely hope this is not the end for such a great band, there are five more dates to come in 2026. Will there be new music? Who knows, but let’s keep our fingers crossed. Honestly it doesn’t feel like the Gene story has arrived at the last page yet.

Before this gig I had seen Gene ten times and I truly believed that it would stay at ten, but then the band reformed, so now I have seen them eleven times, so far. I have only seen three acts more times than I have seen Gene; David Bowie (13), Frank Turner (14) and Avalanche Party (15). See I told you Bowie would get another mention, but the question is will Gene move up my personal gig table, there is clearly a strong chance now! This stands as one of the finest gigs I have ever attended and one that I never thought would happen. Just a final note on the nostalgia thing, I went home with two signed vinyl albums and two t shirts!

Play It Again Mayhem – “For The Dead” – Gene February 5, 2025

Here comes the 34th track in the Play It Again Mayhem series. This time it is the turn of my favourite band of the Britpop era in the UK, Gene, with their first single “For The Dead”. It was released as a standalone single in 1994. It sadly only made it to number 86 in the UK singles chart. It has subsequently been made available on the band’s hits collection and the reissue of their debut album ‘Olympian’. It was a double A Side single coupled with “Child’s Body”. The single was released in a limited edition of 1,994 copies via Costermonger Records. The release sold out in two days. The song received a great deal of attention from the music press: Select named it “Single Of The Month”, whilst NME made it their “Single of the Week”.

I saw Gene for the first time in November 1994 at the Old Trout in Windsor. I went to quite a few gigs at that venue, including Oasis in May 1994. Gene were Martin Rossiter lead vocals, keyboards and piano, Steve Mason on guitar, Kevin Miles on bass and Matt James on drums, percussion and occasional backing vocals. To my knowledge Martin Rossiter and Matt James have released solo material and it has been bloody good! The Play It Again Mayhem playlist has been very 1970s centric, and still is, but this is now the second song from the 90s on the list. Take a listen via the link below, share the playlist and let me know what you think.

The Mayhem Monthly Top 20 Song Chart – August 2022 September 25, 2022

Very, very late indeed, but here comes the sixth monthly Mayhem Top 20 Song Chart, this time for August 2022, and it remains as eclectic as most of our previous charts. There are some weird and wonderful strange bedfellows in this list, just like those charts of my youth. The number one for August is the rather splendid Newcastle act, Cat Ryan with their incredible single “Rex Mundi”. They are followed closely by four acts who have not appeared in the song chart before, Trunky Juno, Thrillhouse, Matt James, and Lynx Deluxe. The latter made it into the artist chart for August. Check out Matt James’ new album, ‘Breaking The Fall’, a set of fine songs from a former member of one of my favourite bands, Gene! Politics and passionate, powerful opinions are represented by Captain Ska with “Blood On Your Hands” at number 6, Muse with “Will Of The People” at number 19, and the magnificent current single full of monumental power, passion, and anger from Delilah Bon, “Dead Men Don’t Rape” at number 10. Vaquelin, one of York’s finest bands have appeared in the song chart four months in a row now, their latest single “Broken Window” is at number 20. Classic soul and reggae are represented by Holland and Dozier and Junior Byles. The Streets, Arctic Monkeys, Just Jack, Yungblud, and Pale Waves are all here. Early Italian House Disco music is at number 17 with Silvetti’s “Spring Rain”. Tom Waits is at ten, while classical music gets a look in with the beautiful and haunting piano piece “Metamorphosis No. 4” composed by Philip Glass at number 16. Hannah Robinson has featured in the Mayhem charts a few times and she returns as the voice of J.A.G. on “Fools Lie”. We would love to hear your thoughts on the Mayhem Song Top 20 Chart. Check out the complete list below and click here to access a Spotify playlist of the whole top 20!

With Just A Hint Of Mayhem – Singles Round-Up 2022 Part 3 May 3, 2022

This is the third singles round-up of 2022 which includes ten great songs released earlier in the year (yes we are still catching up!) from a group of artists from all over the world. Reading, New York (via Montreal), Buckinghamshire, Ireland (two of them), Berlin, Manchester, Hull, Canada and London. I think only Head Ballet have appeared on these pages before and while the rest are new to us I am 100% confident that their first appearance will not be their last appearance. It was also rather spooky and random that the artists at 9th and 10th in this list actually have 9 and 10 in their names, freaky huh?

“Laura” – Third Lung

This excellent track from Reading’s Third Lung reminds me of U2 at their best with its immense, soaring Bonoesque vocal and a barrage of riffs all underpinned by a huge rhythm section. Can someone let Third Lung play a set at Red Rocks please?

“I Was Made For Loving You” – Karine Hannah

Karine Hannah takes the classic Kiss power ballad and turns it into a steamy, sultry torch song. A truly magnificent cover version.

“Born To Rule” – Matt James

Matt James was the drummer and co-songwriter with one of the greatest British bands of the 90s, Gene. He left the music business for a while, but now he is back and based on this track, very much on form. This Latin-tinged, brass-driven beauty rolls over your ears nicely and bodes well for his first solo album, produced by Stephen Street, which will be out later this year.

“When I’m Not Awake I’m Dreaming Of You” – lullahush

This track from Ireland’s lullahush is, I suppose, electronica but a kind of dreamy, chilled, and at the same time dancey type of electronica. Vocally there is a folk-like element, which reminded me of Jon Marsh of the Beloved and the synth patterns are otherworldly, which maybe fits the dream subject perfectly. I love the contrasting female vocals towards the end.

“You, Me And Everything Else” – Friendmaker

This starts out as a soft lament and builds into a beautifully orchestrated crescendo, which evokes some of the great choruses produced by Semisonic back in the day. David Marron’s vocal performance is sublime and contains great emotional depth.

“Distant Shouts” – Donkey Kid

Berlin’s Donkey Kid’s songwriting for me compares lyrically, on this track at least, with Mike Skinner. But musically it has shades of some of the best alternative electro sounds from the early 80s. The sort of tracks that John Peel would have championed. I am now most definitely a Donkey Kid fan!

“To Know Yours” – Head Ballet

Supremely talented electro pop duo from Manchester Head Ballet were formed by Kiera Court and Danny Casio and with this single they have come up with another sublime stunner of a track. It refuses to leave your head after just a couple of listens. In a parallel universe this would be playing from every radio during a scorching hot summer!

“Eyes Wide Open” – Breeze

The opening to this rather fabulous ditty had me thinking of the Fountains Of Wayne at their peak twinned with the type of infectious hook and chorus that Noel Gallagher used to be good at back in the 90s. These Hullraisers can only get better, they have an average age that is just over 25% of my age! I am looking forward to seeing them live.

“That Was Yesterday” – J9

Janine “J9” Carter really is a very special talent. This track has everything from drum machine dance vibes, to dark electronic drone, androgynous vocals, a cinematic feel and a sweeping sound that would not be out of place on the soundtrack to “Blade Runner”. A bloody awesome tune! It also has a video that leaps right over the state line of Weirdsville!

“Demons” – 10 Guage

This is heavy, but not just heavy, we are talking FUCKING HEAVY! A tune that forces you to head bang along to its cascade of heart stopping riffs. Rob Jewson’s vocal performance is off the charts./ I will be first in the queue when the 10 Guage album hits the world and I hope they come and play up here in York soon.
