That rather jolly bunch of ace tune-smiths and smart rockers from York known as Honours are back with another single. It is called “Gone” and trust me despite the title you really won’t want this one to go away! I can hear elements of Ocean Colour Scene, Primal Scream and even the Who in this classic rock riff avalanche that would impact the world on a seismic level. It is funky, it is soulful, it is made to dance to and it is a staggeringly good song. Everything this band has released so far points to a brilliant début album when it happens. Check this fabulous new single out and check Honours out at a venue near you soon. See them before they start moving on up to much bigger venues! These boys are a rock force to be reckoned with!  Click here to find it on Spotify!

Skylights – The Crescent, York – Saturday 18th August 2018 August 23, 2018

Any gig which has bands on the bill that you are a fan of has to be good right? Well I had very high hopes for this one. I have had the pleasure of reviewing a couple of recent songs by headliners, Skylights and a couple by another great York band Honours. This would also be the third time I had seen Honours play live. The venue was the wonderfully quirky Crescent in York. First up were a band that I had not heard of before this show, Fond. So two Scotsmen and a Yorkshire walk into a band and call it Fond. Apologies for the poor humour but I am not particularly fond of this lot. They are very competent musicians and some of their songs, particularly their set closer strive to raise the spirit of the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. It is an admirable intention but one which ultimately failed for me. In my opinion this lot might be better suited to open for a Who tribute band in a small pub.

Fond

Honours were next and as they always seem to do they played a set that could easily have been from a headline slot. Two songs that are now becoming classics; “Freedom” and “Duchess” had the crowd, which included members of Hello Operator, bouncing hard. Daniel and Tom power a finely tuned rhythm section engine which under pins the riff laden road laid down by Struan. On top of that is Jordan’s excellent vocal which could power a Formula 1 car. They also showcased a new song, “Gone” which might be their next single. It was apparently not even a week old and for me it stole their set, a truly stunning tune. Once again this raises my expectations in anticipation of the first Honours album, whenever that might arise.

Tonight’s headliners Skylights are on the comeback trail and this show is a big part of that comeback. So was it worth Rob and Rob and Myles Soley returning? Damned right it was! Their first two releases, “YRA 2018” and “What You Are” sound excellent in the recorded versions but when played live they take flight with the power of a supersonic plane. There were a lot of additional vocalists in the crowd for “YRA”. Influenced by the likes of Oasis and perhaps the Verve they also put their own personality on some great songs. “Drive Me Away” singularly failed to drive anyone away and kept us all rocking. I hope Skylights stick around for a bit longer this time! All in all this was another great night at the Crescent. Thanks to Turnbull for putting me on the guest list. It was great catching up with ace York music promoter Simon Pattinson again. Mr P how the hell did we manage to drink so much?

‘Duchess’ – Honours May 23, 2018

One of York‘s finest bands, Honours, release their second single “Duchess” hot on the heels of their stunning début with “Freedom”. I truly believe that this band have the talent to become one of the classic British bands. They contain the DNA of everyone from the Kinks, Blur and Paul Weller. In fact the first time I listened to “Duchess” I thought of the Modfather. The guitar lines are comparable with some of Steve Cradock‘s finest. This new song isn’t as instant as “Freedom” however it is still a very classy tune indeed that grows in stature with each listen. If “Duchess” and its predecessor “Freedom” are a harbinger of the first Honours album then that record will be a towering success. Check it out now on Spotify, iTunes and SoundCloud!

“Freedom” – Honours April 2, 2018

Ever since going to my first gig more than 45 years ago live music still excites me. Especially the chance to see bands and singers that I have never heard of before. Festivals are perhaps the best at providing that opportunity, but so are the small gigs put on by tireless local promoters. My adopted city of York has a thriving music scene with an amazing diversity of acts and I was lucky to catch one of those bands at the Crescent in York last week. I am talking about Honours, a powerful and soulful four piece rock band who have just released their single “Freedom” via SoundCloud. Click on the link attached to the song title to hear it.

It has a funky guitar vibe with a great “ooh ooh” hook. The vocals have a hard edge that compares with some of the best British rock singers over the years. This is underpinned by a rhythm section that really controls the beat and really understands what rhythm means. I think that their rock lineage can be traced back to the Small Faces and all the way to Oasis and beyond. The song was recorded at the Nave in Leeds. This is a band that is oozing with potential and I am really looking forward to seeing them play live again and to hear more stuff from them. Jordan, Daniel, Struan and Tom, this is a top tune! Check Honours out, give “Freedom” a listen now, you know it makes sense!
