On This Day Dame David Gets Cursive For Ziggy’s Suicide Song! November 28, 2025

David Bowie’s handwritten lyrics fetched £89,000 after they were sold at Omega Auctions in Uxbridge, west London on 28th November 2023. (Incidentally that is where I grew up). The lyrics sheet contained the late singer’s corrections, drafts and notes when creating his tracks “Rock n Roll Suicide” and “Suffragette City”. Both tracks in the sale featured on Bowie’s 1972 classic album ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars’. That album has always been seen as a full on concept album. I don’t think that it is, how about you?

On 14th November 1969 “Sugar Sugar” by the Archies entered its fifth week at No.1 on the UK singles chart. It went on to top the charts for eight weeks. The single became the longest running One Hit Wonder in the UK. It was the first No.1 performed by cartoon characters. It reached the top spot in fifteen countries including the USA. The song was written by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim. Ron Dante provided the lead vocals, accompanied by Toni Wine and the other co-writer, Andy Kim. This was also the first single that I ever bought, from Uxbridge market when I was just ten years old. Check out the dancing in the second video!

On This Day Elvis Felt So Lonely He Was Gifted A Writing Credit! November 10, 2025

On 10th November 1955 Elvis Presley attended the fourth Country Music Disc Jockey Convention in Nashville Tennessee. When he returned to his hotel after the Convention Mae Boren Axton played him a demo of a new song she had written with Tommy Durden called “Heartbreak Hotel”. Presley released the track as a single on January 27, 1956. It was his first release on his new record label RCA Victor. The song gave him his his first No.1 one pop record in the USA. It also reached number 3 in Australia and number 2 in the UK. As was common for the times Presley was given a co writing credit simply for agreeing to record the song.

On November 8th 1958 the soundtrack to South Pacific went to No.1 on the UK album chart. It became the longest running No.1 album of all time spending a total of 115 weeks at the No.1 position. It went to the top of the UK charts in 1958, 1959, 1960 and 1961. The Nellie in the title of this post was Nellie Forbush who sang the song, “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair” in the film. All the songs were written by Rodgers and Hammerstein for the Broadway version of the show from which the film was derived.

One of the most popular songs on the soundtrack, certainly my favourite is “Happy Talk”. It has been covered by many artists, including Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald and Captain Sensible. Juanita Hall sang the song on the film soundtrack and appeared in the movie as Bloody Mary. The soundtrack album was number one in the UK album charts on the day I was born, 1st January 1959. Yes I really am that old even though I look so young! 😉

On this day, 18th August 1982, the City of Liverpool named four Streets after the Beatles: John Lennon Drive, Paul McCartney Way, George Harrison Close and Ringo Starr Drive. So yes, they became their own long and winding road!

On This Day The Reading Rock Festival Was Born, Sort Of! August 6, 2025

On 6th August 1970 the 10th National Jazz, Blues and Pop four day Festival was held at Plumpton Racecourse in Sussex, England. Featuring, Family, Groundhogs, Cat Stevens, Deep Purple, Fat Mattress, Yes, Caravan, The Strawbs, Black Sabbath, Wild Angles, Wishbone Ash and Daddy Longlegs. The following year it moved to Richfield Avenue in Reading, and the rest as they say, is history! In 1971 the kind of fledgling festival featured Rory Gallagher, Genesis, and Wishbone Ash again, among others. My first Reading Festival was in 1975, so if I go to the Leeds Festival in a few weeks, and I might, then this would mark 50 years of the Festival for me 🙂

This wasn’t the 10th Festival, but what a great clip!

On This Day The Boss Gets Signed! June 9, 2025

On 9th June 1972 Bruce Springsteen was signed to Columbia Records by label boss John Hammond and started to assemble the core E Street Band from various Asbury Park ex-band mates. The wonderful thing is that more than 50 years later he is still going strong. He continues to regularly attack TACO Donny and I am glad that he is using his position and voice to do that!

On This Day The Mop Tops Mopped Up The Chart! April 17, 2025

On 17th April 1971 all four Beatles had solo singles in the UK charts, Paul McCartney with “Another Day” (no. 11), John Lennon “Power To The People” (no. 10), George Harrison “My Sweet Lord” (no. 25) and Ringo Starr “It Don’t Come Easy” (no. 29). The most successful of the four was George Harrison as earlier in the year “My Sweet Lord” sat at the top of the chart and made him the first of the Fab Four to have a solo number one. McCartney just missed out as “Another Day” stopped at number 2. Lennon’s song peaked at number 7 and Ringo’s at number 4. Would all of these have been Beatles songs had they stayed together as a band? Who knows. Incidentally George played on Ringo’s song and Ringo returned the favour by playing on “My Sweet Lord”. Klaus Voormann played on three out of the four tracks, the only one he didn’t appear on was McCartney’s.

Are they actually dancing to the same song?
