On 19th October 2007, Johnny Marr was made a visiting professor of music at the University of Salford in Manchester. The former Smiths guitarist and incredibly successful solo artist was set to deliver a series of workshops and masterclasses to students on the BA Popular Music and Recording degree. On the 18th October 2007, the Spice Girls US record label announced that their forthcoming greatest hits album would be made available exclusively at the lingerie chain Victoria’s Secret shops in the US two months ahead of other outlets. That’s pants that is! This was eleven years after “Wannabe” hit number one in almost every country across the world and that was the first of six consecutive UK number ones. Incidentally, 600,000 copies of the Greatest Hits album were sold via the world-famous lingerie chain, but none of those counted toward a chart placing. So the album limped to number 93 in the USA, It hit number two in the UK and reached the chart summit in Australia!

On 16th October 2010 Auburn University graduate student Justin Havird named a new species of fish, Lepidocephalichthys zeppelini, because the fish’s pectoral fin reminded him of the double-neck guitar used by Jimmy Page. He said, “I’m a big Led Zeppelin fan, and I was listening to them while I was working on the fish, and the structure that makes this species unique just reminded me of the guitar that Jimmy Page played“. Go on dear reader, you thought this was going to be about the mud shark incident when you read the title, didn’t you?

On 29th September 2012, the UK tabloid press reported that there really was a girl who works down the chip shop and swore she was Elvis’ daughter. This was after Lisa Marie Presley was spotted serving up deep-fried treats on a mobile motor called Mr Chippy. The then 44-year-old donned an apron and cooked battered cod for the locals. Kim Scales, who owned the business, said: “Lisa Marie likes to see how we live and experience British life. We were laughing because the customers didn’t know who she was. She really enjoyed it.” The singer had moved to the quaint village of Rotherfield, East Sussex, in 2010, from Los Angeles. Sadly Lisa Marie is no longer with us after passing away last year.
Also on 29th September, this time in 1989, while travelling on his motorbike from Los Angeles, Bruce Springsteen called in at Matt’s Saloon in Prescott, Arizona, and jammed with the house band. Bruce played a bunch of rock and roll classics, including Elvis Presley’s “Don’t Be Cruel,” and Chuck Berry’s “Sweet Little Sixteen” and “Route 66.” Bruce also donated $100,000 to a barmaid’s hospital bill.

On 21st September 1992, Radiohead released their debut single, “Creep,” on Parlophone Records. They had initially recorded other tracks for a potential debut but were not satisfied with any of them. In between takes at the studio, they began jamming out another song, which eventually became “Creep.” Thom Yorke had written it years earlier while studying at Exeter University. Producers Paul Q. Kolderie and Sean Slade were immediately taken with the track and fought to make it a single. It was a real chart sleeper until it became a huge global hit in 1993. Today, it remains the group’s most successful single.
Meanwhile, on 21st September back in1977, Meat Loaf released his debut album, ‘Bat Out Of Hell’, alongside songwriter and composer Jim Steinman and producer Todd Rundgren. The epic record, which features such hits as “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” and “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad,” remains one of the best-selling albums of all time. What is even more incredible is that this was at the height of the punk era in the UK.

On 15th September 1965, The Ford Motor Company became the first carmaker to offer an 8-track tape player as an option for their entire line of vehicles in the USA. This then very modern audio technology was only offered in auto stores at the time and was still a year away from being sold to consumers for home use. Did any of you have an 8-track player?
On 15th September 2014, Apple released a tool to remove U2’s new album from its customers’ iTunes accounts just six days after giving away the music for free. On September 7th, 2010 Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” was voted the greatest “lighter in the air song of all time” by lighter company Zippo. I am guessing that that would be the phone-in-the-air anthem nowadays! Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven”, was voted in at No. 2 and Meatloaf’s “I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)” was at No. 3 in the survey.
Meanwhile, in 1985 on 7th September David Bowie and Mick Jagger were at Number 1 on the UK singles chart with their version of the Martha Reeves and The Vandellas 1964 hit “Dancing In The Street.” The song was recorded to raise money for Live Aid/ Band Aid. The original plan was to perform a track together live, with Bowie performing at Wembley Stadium and Jagger at the JFK Stadium, but someone recognised that there would be a half-second delay making the idea impossible to achieve. But aside from all that satellite shenanigans stuff, is this one of the worst-ever cover versions? I certainly think so!
7th September 1968 saw Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham make their live debut, allegedly, as Led Zeppelin, albeit billed as The New Yardbirds at the Teen Club in Gladsaxe (a suburb on the outskirts of Copenhagen, Denmark). Around 1,200 young folks attended the show at Egegard School. Teen Club President Lars Abel, while introducing the New Yardbirds on stage called Robert Plant Robert Plat!

On August 28th, 1968, Tammy Wynette recorded “Stand By Your Man” at Epic Studios. It took just 15 minutes to finish and became Wynette’s signature song. It was co-written with producer Billy Sherrill and was the title track of Tammy’s 1969 album. It has been a staple of films for many years featuring in ‘and would be featured over the decades in films like ‘Five Easy Pieces’, ‘Four Weddings And A Funeral’, ‘The Crying Game’, and ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ to name just a few. Interestingly I think Tammy was on her fourth husband when she wrote the song.
On 28th August 1972, the artist formerly known as Vincent Furnier, Alice Cooper was Number One on the UK singles chart with “School’s Out”. He has said he was inspired to write the song when answering the question, “What’s the greatest three minutes of your life?”. His answer was “There’s two times during the year. One is Christmas morning, the next one is the last three minutes of the last day of school.“

On 22nd August 1968 Ringo Starr quit The Beatles during the recording sessions for what was to become known as ‘The White Album’ He said that he couldn’t handle the constant bickering and the tension became too much for him. The news of Ringo’s departure was kept secret, and he later rejoined the sessions on September 3rd.
