Glastonbury tickets go on sale in a few weeks, I’ve registered, have you? I have been to quite a few festivals, but if I am lucky enough to get a ticket this will be my first Glasto, after all these years!

Untitled-23

Anyway take your mind back to the first Glastonbury Festival in 1970. The first thing of note is that it was called something different then, it was the Pilton Pop, Blues and Folk Festival and all festival goers were provided with free milk. Well Worthy Farm is a dairy farm. It was almost 45 years to the day that it took place. The Kinks were originally scheduled to headline the event but were replaced much nearer the start of the inaugural festival on the site by Tyrannosaurus Rex. Obviously this was just before they became T Rex.

For many of you this is probably not new information. However, did you know who opened the festival in 1970 and then returned to the stage at the end of the second day to close it? It was the marvellously quintessential English band Stackridge! They have played Glastonbury more recently too; in 1999 and 2008. So in honour of that achievement I would like you all to get ready to “Do The Stanley”!

I’m sure that the majority of you are by now familiar with the classic image used on the cover of Joy Division’s album ‘Unknown Pleasures’. It certainly seems to be making an appearance on plenty of items lately; mugs, t-shirts and such. Some of you will also know that the image depicts the radio signature for the first pulsar ever discovered, which was rather unimaginatively named CP1919. Well I say unimaginatively, but it’s not too far from R2D2 is it?

In a recent interview Bernard Sumner off of Joy Division, New Order and Electronic said “Lots of people know that a pulsar is a collapsed star but not everyone knows that pulsars rotate”. He then went on to say “This one goes round at 45rpm” Bernard sometimes wonders if the universe is taking the piss. I certainly think that the universe appears to be voting for a return to vinyl!

The AC/DC fans among you will be familiar with the firing of cannons during “For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)” when they play live. But did you know this 21-gun salute came from the fact that the band were recording around the same time as the Royal Wedding of Charles and Diana in 1981?

We are all familiar with the Andy Warhol designed cover for the Rolling Stones 1971 album ‘Sticky Fingers‘ I presume? If you bought the album in Spain when it originally came out then you might not be too familiar with the good old zipper cover. The original cover was censored by the Franco regime, presumably as it depicted the groin area. The track listing was also deemed inappropriate on the Spanish release of the album on which “Sister Morphine” was replaced by a live version of Chuck Berry’s “Let It Rock”. That was originally available on the B-Side of the classic Stones single “Brown Sugar“.

The zipper cover for which Andy Warhol was allegedly paid £15,000 was replaced in Spain by the one above which shows some sticky fingers rising from a tin of Fowlers West India Treacle. Is it just me or is that likely to just as offensive to anyone offended by the original album cover?

Bjork finds that it helps to hold her breath when trying to stay oh so quiet!

Many of you probably knew that Bjork‘s “It’s Oh So Quiet” was originally recorded by American actress Betty Hutton in 1951. I certainly did. However I didn’t know another little musical trivia nugget about Betty until now. She was also the inspiration for the Throwing Muses song “Elizabeth Jane”. Sadly I have been unable to find a link to that song online. If you have one then let me know

Before

Apparently the usually clean-shaven Brandon Flowers off of the Killers has developed a rather eccentric (or perhaps strange) habit of keeping all the stubble he shaves from his face. He has stockpiled it in a bag for around seven years. He is allegedly quoted in the NME as saying “It doesn’t smell. It’s all black but about halfway up you start to see some greys. I don’t know what to do with it yet”

After

My advice Brandon is perhaps you should use it to stuff a pillow which you can give as a gift to your therapist. I’m sure that you must have one. Surely anyone with a habit like this needs one!

I mostly agree with that. But saving your stubble? Come on Brandon, you’re an asshole!

As regular readers will know I am a 70s music fan. So I am always interested in 70s music trivia, particularly if it involves the UK charts. I was pleased to read a little bit of trivia that I don’t believe I have published before. There is only one British act who had at least one UK top 50 hit in every year of the 70s from 1970 to 1979. That band was Hot Chocolate. I haven’t been able to verify the next one but I understand Elvis Presley also achieved at least one top 50 UK hit for every year of the 70s.  Diana Ross almost made it, as she only missed the UK top 50 in 1972. Do you know of any other artists who have done this?

Here are all of Hot Chocolate’s 1970’s UK top 50 hits (including their chart position), there is hardly a duff one among them in my opinion.

1970 “Love Is Life” 6
1971 “You Could Have Been a Lady” 22
1971 “I Believe (In Love)” 8
1972 “You’ll Always Be a Friend” 23
1973 “Rumours” 44
1973 “Brother Louie” 7
1974 “Emma” 3
1974 “Cheri Babe” 31
1975 “Disco Queen” 11
1975 “A Child’s Prayer” 7
1975 “You Sexy Thing” 2
1976 “Don’t Stop It Now” 11
1976 “Man to Man” 14
1976 “Heaven Is in the Back Seat of My Cadillac” 25
1977 “So You Win Again” 1
1977 “Put Your Love In Me” 10
1978 “Every 1’s a Winner” 12
1978 “I’ll Put You Together Again” 13
1979 “Mindless Boogie” 46

Meatloaf is a bit of a football fan (that’s soccer to my friends across the big pond). In fact he is supposedly a fan of English football and his favourite team is the mighty Hartlepool United. Really? Are we supposed to believe that? Anyway I wonder if the club sell Meatloaf pies?

Did you ever wonder why Elvis‘ home was called Graceland? Well it was named after the original owner SE Toof’s daughter who was called Grace. It also has the honour of being the second most visited private residence in the United States outside the White House. Really? Come on, surely the White House is only technically a private residence, right?

In 1996, Ringo Starr off of the Beatles (peace and love, peace and love) appeared in a Japanese advertisement for apple sauce (or was it apple juice?), which is apparently what “Ringo” means in Japanese.
