The Mayhem Charts – June 2025 July 21, 2025

Here is the Mayhem chart for June 2025, rather late (just like last month) I know, but better late than never right? Regular readers know the chart is based on my streaming listening habits. These are gathered over the last month by obscurify.com. My taste in music remains 99% more obscure than the rest of the UK! The chart remains contemporary-ish (but if a classic artist releases something new they might feature in the chart). However, last month’s top three “Legacy” artists were David Bowie, Stevie Wonder and Johnny Nash. Obscurify also suggests the most obscure artists I have listened to for March and they are Liz Davinci, Dead Rat Society and Kindelan. Bowie, Dead Rat Society and Kindelan have retained their positions from last month. Kindelan also appears in this months song chart with “Cigarettes”.

Party Nails the top artist for June. Bruce Springsteen and Getdown Services are the only two acts that remain in the artist chart from last month. Two artists appear both in the artist and the song chart, they are Party Nails, number one in the artist chart and number two in the song chart with “Same Old Song”. The second is Molly Rymer number eight in the artist chart and number three in the song chart with “Say The Same (Acoustic)”. HerOrangeCoat makes it to the top of the song chart with “Daytime TV”. 60% of the artist chart is female and the song chart is 100% female! So without further ado here are those charts in full! Click on the Spotify link below to listen to the famous (or infamous) five! Twenty one minutes of great music!

We are huge fans of HerOrangeCoat here at Mayhem Towers, so we are always excited when she releases new material. She has just released a new single, “Daytime TV” and it is darkly gorgeous. A tale of losing your job just before Christmas and getting drawn into shitty daytime TV and the whole range of feelings that align with that kind of feeling of loss. The emotion is powerful and her voice is perfect, like a 21st century folky Karen Carpenter. The harmonies, which I think are multitracked, are exquisite and the finely plucked mandolin brings everything together. What I love about HerOrangeCoat is that she is never afraid to use the silence. You need to listen to this song NOW!

Herorangecoat paid us a visit at Mayhem Towers last week and what a great conversation we had. We spoke about musical influences, jobs, the state of the music business and the state of the world. This is now officially the second longest interview I have done! I hope you enjoy it! After you have listened give ‘Ballads For This Age’ a spin. The Spotify link is below. Here is the Mayhem chart for December 2024. Regular readers know the chart is based on my Spotify listening habits. These are gathered over the last month by obscurify.com. Apparently, my tastes have fallen by four points to 92% more obscure than the rest of the UK! It must be all the Christmas standards I have listened to last month. Hello all you people on the nice list, and I suppose some of you on the naughty list too! Since COVID I have let the annual Christmas messages from bands and artists that we have featured or reviewed throughout the year slip a little. But now they are back kicking off with the uber-talented HerOrangeCoat. She released a fabulous EP, ‘Ballads For This Age’ which has been on constant rotation here at Mayhem Towers. It is a beautiful collection of songs. We will be interviewing HerOrangeCoat early in the new year and I am so looking forward to that! I haven’t seen her play live yet, but that is on my list for 2025! I hope to have another couple of Christmas messages coming soon, but I plan for their to be an abundance of them in 2025.

‘Ballads For This Age’ EP – HerOrangeCoat December 1, 2024

After teasing us with some sublime tracks over the last few months HerOrangeCoat has now released those songs along with a couple of new ones to form her 5-track EP ‘Ballads For This Age’. It kicks off with “Ballad 1 (Sorry)” a toweringly, transcendent and heavenly song. The emotion in her voice and the sparseness of the instruments made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, not in fear, but in awe of such a gorgeous piece of music. Apparently, the song is not a cry for help, but rather a resolute, resigned defeat. It speaks to the vast mental health emergency, whilst detailing HerOrangeCoat’s own personal journey with anxiety. Next comes “Ballad 2 (Skin Off My Back)”. It is a divinely dark slice of modern folk which feels like a deeply personal song and Georgia delivers it with controlled emotion and finesse. This is a majestic and heavenly tune.

“Ballad 3 (Jamaica ’59)”, is my current favourite. It flows like a river enriched with Joni Mitchell’s essence. The music is understated, but excellent, and Georgia’s voice is spectacular and perfect. It has folk, jazz, and soft rock entwined throughout. Incidentally “Ballad 1 (Sorry)” and “Ballad 2 (Skin Off My Back)” made it into the Mayhem song chart hitting number 2 and number 1 respectively. HerOrangeCoat once again proves that she is not afraid to use the gaps between notes in the dark, mysterious “Ballad 4 (Second Nature)”. The simplicity draws you deep inside the song and then unveils its mesmerising complexity. The EP ends with a song that doesn’t have the Ballad prefix. It is, appropriately, entitled “Postscript” and the simple and beautiful harp sound carries you into an ethereal Valhalla of music. Georgia’s voice and backing vocal is emotional, soulful and glorious. This is a stunning EP and one which I will be playing often. You need this music in your life.

HerOrangeCoat’s new single, “Ballad 3 (Jamaica ’59)”, is out and it is the third instalment toward her EP ‘Ballads for this Age’. This one is my favourite so far, it flows like a river enriched with Joni Mitchell’s essence. The music is understated, but excellent, and Georgia’s voice is spectacular and perfect. It has folk, jazz, and soft rock entwined throughout. Like the previous two songs in the collection, it feels very personal. The EP is due out next month and I believe it will be something special indeed!
