With Just A Hint Of Mayhem

Richard Hawley – Museum Gardens York – Saturday 5th July 2025 July 6, 2025


It was great to catch up with friends old and new at another mega gig in the Museum Gardens in York. Headliner for this one was Richard Hawley, a man who was once a member of Longpigs (1993-2000) and a touring member of Pulp (1998–2002, 2011–2012). He released his first solo album ‘Late Night Final’ in 2001. But enough of him for now, because the bill included some fine support acts. First on stage was Hamish Hawk. This is a man who produces classic Scottish pop rock that in my opinion could only be made in Britain. Imagine, if you will, Edwyn Collins travelling back in time to the Middle Ages and coming back as Hamish Hawk. While the wonderfully frantic punk funk of “Caterpillar” closed the show it was “The Mauritian Badminton Doubles Champion, 1973” that was the highlight of the set for me.

Next it was the turn of BC Camplight a Manchester-based American songwriter and multi-instrumentalist (a.k.a. Brian James Christinzio). He released his first album, ‘Hide Run Away’ in 2005 and his latest, ‘A Sober Conversation’ earlier this year. The band were tight and at times sounded like a much rockier early Elton John. The backing vocals occasionally showed great prowess for some doo-wop style vamping. BC Camplight and his band are a fucking awesome unit, how the hell have I never seen them live before? There were way to many high points to mention all of them, but I loved “I Only Drink When I’m Drunk” and “Two Legged Dog”.

The penultimate band was last year’s Mercury Music prize winners English Teacher. If Indie was a genre (it isn’t) then I am sure some people might suggest English Teacher as a part of the genre definition. But they are so much more than what many see as Indie. The band has some wonderfully deep rock depths overlaid with sometimes intriguing but always gorgeous lyrics. They played a new song, “Tooth Pick” and that has some delightful prog rock overtones. Every song in their set was perfect but “R & B” and “Albert Road” were mountainous. I have been listening to that debut album ‘This Could Be Texas’ again while I have been writing up this review. I can see English Teacher being a force in British music for years.

Finally it was time for Richard Willis Hawley to grace the Museum Gardens stage. Including the main man himself there were ten people on stage, the string quartet added some beautiful almost cinematic soundscapes to Hawley’s magnificent songs. While he didn’t play my favourite, “Tonight The Streets Are Ours”, the seventeen song set was so majestic I didn’t really notice it hadn’t been played until I was on my journey home. But he did play the soon to be 20 years old ‘Coles Corner’ album in full and what a delight it was. “The Ocean” actually had me welling up a little. Then when Richard remained on stage to play the traditional lullaby, “Who’s Gonna Shoe Your Pretty Little Feet?”, accompanied just by his acoustic guitar it made me think of my now adult children when they were very young. Hawley’s interaction with his audience was funny, self-deprecating and at times very emotional. He explained the reason that many of the band were wearing was to show support for Dioga Jota, the Liverpool footballer, who died recently. That got a well deserved warm reaction from the crowd. His skit about giving up smoking 40 cigs a day and now saving £15,000 a year as a result was very funny and featured his ace blunt Yorkshire dry humour. It was good to hear “Galley Girl” again, that song was always one of my favourites from his ninth album ‘Further’ (2019). The band closed out on a slightly psych wig out of a rock fest with a towering “Heart Of Oak”. This ranks as one of the best sets I have ever seen. The last time that I saw Richard Hawley was at the V Festival in 2006. I promise not to leave it as long next time!

Big shout out to Futuresounds for pulling together such a great run of shows in the magnificent setting that is the Museum Gardens in York. I am already excited for next year, are you?

The Mayhem Charts – May 2024 June 2, 2024


Here is the Mayhem chart for May 2024. Regular and constant readers know that the chart is based on my Spotify listening habits over the last month gathered together by obscurify.com. Apparently, my tastes are 98% more obscure than the rest of the UK! A drop of 1% from last month. The chart remains contemporary-ish (but if a classic artist releases something new they might feature in the chart). However, the top three “Legacy” artists are Johnny Nash, Stevie Wonder, and Bruce Springsteen. Obscurify also suggests the most obscure artists I have listened to and for May those are PERCY, The Apocalypse Disco, and Joe Solo. There is a top ten artists chart and a top 5 songs chart. There is the usual eclectic mix of artists, including two that were in the top ten last month, Frank Turner, and Delilah Bon! Delilah is the only artist to feature in the artist chart and the song chart for May, with her current single “Evil, Hate Filled Female” making it to the top of the song chart. Delilah Bon has been in the artist charts for six consecutive months. Meanwhile, a rather big artist hits the top of the artist charts. Yes, Taylor Swift has finally topped the only chart that matters! To honour that achievement she is also included in this month’s playlist! Incidentally, the longest artist name ever to reach the Mayhem Artist Chart is Warrington Runcorn New Town Development Plan, they are at number six! I have always had a sneaky bit of respect for All Saints cover of the Red Hot Chili Peppers “Under The Bridge”. It was an inspired choice which Nicole, Natalie, Mel and Shaznay took to it number one in the UK in 1998. It was the second of their five UK number one singles. As I said, sneaky respect is what I have for this cover version, but that respect is multiplied immensely now that I know who provided the rather nifty guitar on the track. It was none other than Richard Hawley! How did I not know that until now?

Mr Hawley does his best to try and save a few seats for All Saints!

 

Reading Festival 2011 – Day 2 – Saturday 27th August August 28, 2011


Hello again people and here is the dispatch from the muddy fields of the Reading festival after day 2. Firstly I have to mention a rather funny comment I made on the way to the main arena today. Which strangely enough for me was said completely innocently. My feet were sticking in the mud quite a lot so I said; “If this mud gets any more sticky my boots will be sucked off”. It made Nick and me laugh and if you’re not laughing then maybe you had to be there or you have a much cleaner mind than ours. Or maybe you’re just too mature!

We only caught Funeral Party’s last song in the NME/ Radio 1 tent they sounded pretty good though. Yuck were in the NME/ Radio 1 tent next and were recommended by my friend John Hayhurst who is usually at the Leeds festival but unfortunately can’t make it this year. It was a bloody good tip as it happens! I would describe them as shoegazers with a young Bob Dylan lookalike as a singer. But a great band I will be downloading their album on Monday night. Oh and I almost forgot also the drummer looked like my old boss Bazza Hutton with added afro. Castrovalva were on the BBC Introducing stage, we didn’t see much of them but they definitely need to look at their audience more.

Next was our first visit to the Main Stage, where we spent most of the day eventually. Joined by a supporting cast of really nice and mad in a nice way people from all over the world; South Africa, Brazil and Brighton at least. It was hard to refuse the offer of a free beer from the South African blokes and even shhhhh…… whisper it; a small toke on one of their spliffs! The Pigeon Detectives were on for me they are  just bland identikit indie pop. Although Nick wouldn’t agree with that. In their favour they are very hardworking. Seasick Steve was next up on the Main Stage. What can I say? Well for starters he is a supreme talent with way more charisma and stage presence than Liam Gallagher even when sat down. Amazingly he was joined on stage for most of his set by none other than John Paul Jones off of Led Zeppelin. We saw a couple from Tribes who were pretty good. we then paid our daily visit to the comedy tent to see Michael Fabbri who was very filthy and very funny.

Madness or should that be Mudness (thanks for that one Nick) were next on the Main Stage. When I first read that they were on the bill some months ago I wondered whether they would be able to really pull it off. Well I am happy to report that they did in bucketloads. This was probably the best ever loved up party vibe I have ever seen in 20 odd years of going to this festival at Reading. It even included a mosh conga. Jimmy Eat World were next; they were very good but who could have followed Madness? The National were an excellent chilled out close to the afternoon session and a good precursor to Pulp. If the members of the Doors were born in the 80’s they may have sounded like the National and I will have to download some of their stuff soon too.

Pulp, who were sharing top billing at the Festival with the Strokes were next on the Main Stage; from the simply stated laser phrase show at the start to the brilliant and perfect closer “Common People” they were truly fucking awesome. Jarvis Cocker is a certified genius who has immense stage craft and worked the audience to perfection. Richard Hawley was also on stage with them.  The Strokes closed the day and as expected were very, very good, but for me not quite as good as Pulp. Jarvis joined them for a great version of the Cars’ “Just What I Needed”. So sadly only one day to go now but it looks like a good one!
