Day 10 of Mayhem’s 12 Days of Christmas series for 2025 is here. The nine posts so far have featured the Apocalypse Disco, Radiohead, Black Box Recorder, Shrub, the Postal Service, Tom Waits, Johnny Cash, Bring Me The Horizon and Muse. Many of you will know by now that this years theme is not very festive and is almost certainly our darkest theme so far. But with all the crap in the world at the moment much of it driven by Rapey Van Winkle in the partly demolished White House I thought I would celebrate Chrimbo this year with songs about the end of the world. These are twelve fabulous tracks despite the rather savage theme. Music has, and will always accompany me wherever I go, even if that is into the heart of the forthcoming (???) Armageddon! Maybe I need to make them into a playlist, what do you think? Some of you have contacted me with a resounding yes to the playlist. It will appear when we post the final installment a.k.a. day 12. There may be a surprise extra track on the day 12 posting too, keep checking in!

Today’s song is a classic sixties track, “The End” by the Doors. It was the final track on their self-titled debut album that was released in January 1967. In 2015, the Library of Congress selected ‘The Doors’ album for preservation in the National Recording Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant“. In 1969 Jim Morrison said this of the song “Every time I hear [“The End”], it means something else to me. It started out as a simple good-bye song … Probably just to a girl, but I see how it could be a goodbye to a kind of childhood. I really don’t know. I think it’s sufficiently complex and universal in its imagery that it could be almost anything you want it to be“. Personally I do see it as bringing an end of the world vibe with it. It is a truly epic track which in its original form runs for nearly 12 minutes. I have thrown in an even longer live version below too.

“The Life I Love Is Makin’ Music With My Friends” August 9, 2017

Apparently the harmonica is the world’s best-selling music instrument. Who would have thought that such a small humble tool would be that successful? How many of you own a harmonica? Of those who do own one then how many of you can actually play it? While you’re thinking about that take a listen to ten of my favourite harmonica featuring tunes.

I was reading an article in last weeks NME in which they listed their view of the 50 druggiest albums ever recorded. Most of the usual suspects are included with Primal Scream‘s ‘Screamadelica’ making it to the top of the pile (or the bottom of this reverse order listing of course). The article also included a number of great little pieces of trivia. The one that really amused me was Fleetwood Mac, included at number 29 with their 1979 album ‘Tusk’. Apparently they were so full of coke they agreed that the album title would be the nickname that drummer and founder Mick Fleetwood called his todger. Whilst most normal people use simple terms like willy or cock, Mr Fleetwood prefers to call his manhood Tusk. Is it made of ivory with a sharp point? You have to hope not for any of his girlfriends or wives. So, and I may well regret this, what do you call yours?

As for the list, I’d like to know why the Eagles aren’t included, notably ‘Hotel California’
