12 Days To Christmas – Day 8 – Joan Of Arc December 20, 2017

joanholycardhorse

The 20th of December? Wow where has the time gone? It is now day 8 of my 12 days to Christmas blog posts. Today’s historical person who features in a pop song is that lovable scamp, Martyr and holy virgin Joan of Arc. She was born in 1412 and died in 1431 aged just nineteen. She is a national hero in France and was canonised as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. She led a degree of relief effort toward the end of the 100 Years War. She was captured by Burgundian pro English forces and after a trial, was sentenced to be burned at the stake. She is also known as the Maid Of Orleans.

There are many songs which are about or at least mention Joan of Arc. One of my favourites is the Smiths “Bigmouth Strikes Again” for the lyric, “Now I know how Joan of Arc felt, As the flames rose to her Roman nose, And her Walkman started to melt”. But that is not the song that I will be sharing today. In fact I am sharing two by a Liverpool band with a massive name. Yes it is Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (well that is a massively long name isn’t it?), nowadays they are more likely to be known as OMD.  The band featured two songs about Joan Of Arc on their 1981 UK top 5 album ‘Architecture And Morality’. Both were released as singles; “Joan Of Arc” reached number 5 in the UK charts in 1981 and in the following year “Maid of Orleans (The Waltz Joan of Arc)” made it to number 4. The latter was also a number one hit in Germany and the Netherlands. “Maid of Orleans (The Waltz Joan of Arc)” was also played of the closing credits of the final episode of the second series of the rather excellent BBC TV series ‘Ashes To Ashes’.

12 Days To Christmas – Day 7 – Richard Nixon December 19, 2017

Wow here we are already at day 7 of my 12 days to Christmas posts. Today the famous person in a song is ‘ole Tricky Dicky himself, Richard Nixon. Todays post features the Manic Street Preachers with “The Love Of Richard Nixon” a number 2 hit for the band in 2004 in the UK. They had four UK number 2 chart hits in total, the others were “A Design For Life” (1996), “Empty Souls” (2005) and “Your Love Alone Is Not Enough” (2007). They did hit the top of the chart twice though, with “If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next” in 1998 and “The Masses Against The Classes” in 2000. According to the Manics themselves the song is “a soundtrack to disillusion, hatred, love and never giving up”. It gives a degree of credit to Nixon as it outlines some of the more positive aspects of his Presidency.

Richard Milhous Nixon was born in January 1913 and died in April 1994. He was the 36th US Vice President from 1953 to 1961 and then the 37th US President from 1969 to 1974. He became the only US President so far to resign from office. That was in August 1974 following the fall out from the Watergate scandal. Will Donald Trump become the second US President to resign? Let’s hope so! Up to now only two Presidents have ever been successfully impeached by the House Of Representatives; Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton, however both were acquitted by the Senate. The impeachment proceedings against Nixon were never completed because of his resignation. Although Nixon was disgraced by the whole Watergate affair he was later pardoned in September 1974 by Gerald Ford who succeeded him.

12 Days To Christmas – Day 5 – Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Bobby Kennedy and JFK December 17, 2017

hqdefault

Day five of the Chrimbo countdown and todays historical characters theme brings you a song that includes three iconic figures in the title and another within the lyrics. It is the stunningly beautiful and moving song “Abraham, Martin And John”. The song was written by Dick Holler in 1968 in response to the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy. It also refers to Abraham Lincoln and John Kennedy (JFK). All for were great advocates for significant social change and all four were gunned down in cold blood.

The song was originally recorded by Dion and his single was a big US hit. The song has been covered by many artists including Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Ray Charles, Emmylou Harris and Marvin Gaye. It is Marvin Gaye’s version that features as a part of this post. It is my favourite version of this fantastic song. Taken from his 1969 album ‘That’s The Way Love Is’ the song was never issued as a single in the US but reached number 9 in the UK charts that year. Some say it was a precursor to the themes that Marvin explored on his career defining ‘What’s Going On’ album from 1971.

12 Days To Christmas – Day 4 – Jackie Wilson December 16, 2017

The 16th December, oh boy the big bearded weirdy in the red coat is not far away now is he? So it is now day four of my blogs twelve days to Christmas post with the theme this year being famous people from history in songs. Today it is a song about Souls and R & B legend, the late, great Jackie Wilson. Wilson was born in Detroit in June 1934 and died in 1984 aged just 49. He had collapsed with a massive heart attack on stage in 1975 and was in a coma for 8 months. He was semi comatose for the rest of his life. He was known as Mr Excitement and had 14 US top 20 hits. His only UK number one was the posthumous re-release of “Reet Petite” from 1957 in 1986.

Dexys-Midnight-Runners-resize-2

The opening track on Van Morrison’s 1972 album ‘Saint Dominic’s Preview’ honoured Wilson and was called “Jackie Wilson Said (I’m in Heaven When You Smile)”. Morrison often noted the influence of Wilson on his vocal styling. It has been covered by many other artists, notably Dexy’s Midnight Runners for their 1982 album ‘Too-Rye-Ay’. It was released as a single by the band and made it to number 5 in the UK singles chart in 1982. It remains the band’s last top 10 hit in the UK to date and it was the follow up to their worldwide smash hit “Come On Eileen”

Day 3 on the trip and countdown to Christmas and the theme of famous people from history in songs continues. Today it is a song titled “Hudson” from the particularly magnificent Vampire Weekend. The lyrics are based on a poem that the band’s singer Ezra Koenig once wrote about seafarer Henry Hudson. The song was included on the band’s 2013 US number one album ‘Modern Vampires Of The City’.

2013Albumsof201302.VampireWeekend_Tox12-1

Henry Hudson was in search of a North West Passage to Asia and on one such trip in 1611 he was cast adrift by his crew, along with his son and seven others. The crew mutinied as they did not want to proceed any further. Hudson and his party were never seen again. His legacy is that the Hudson Bay and Hudson River are named after him. Nothing much is known of his early years other than he was English and was born most likely somewhere between 1565 and 1570.

It is day two of the twelve days of Christmas famous people from history songs. Today it is Buddy Holly who is honoured in song. Weezer formed in Los Angeles in 1992 and are still going strong. Perhaps their best known song is “Buddy Holly”. It was on their self titled debut album from 1994 which is often referred to as the Blue Album. The single hit number 12 in the UK chart and number 2 in the US Alternative charts. The song also mentions Mary Tyler Moore the American Actress who died in January 2017 aged 80.

Buddy Holly was killed in a fatal air crash that also took the lives of Richie Valens and the Big Bopper on February 3rd 1959. Holly’s demise has featured in many songs, perhaps most notably in Don McLean’s 1972 classic “American Pie” which refers to that fateful day as “the day the music died”. The video for the Weezer song is set in Arnold’s Drive In from the 1970s American SitCom ‘Happy Days’. It was directed by Spike Jonze. The video was also one of the songs on the Windows 95 set up CD.

I thought I would resurrect my themed twelve days of Christmas posts for 2017. The theme for this year is songs about historical figures from many branches of life. First up is probably my favourite ever Bob Dylan song about Rubin Carter a.k.a. The Hurricane a middleweight boxer who was jailed for twenty years for a triple murder that he did not commit. He was born in New Jersey in 1937 and died in Toronto, Canada in 2014.

Carter was tried and convicted twice for the 1966 murders (in 1967 and 1976). The second of those was overturned in 1985 and Carter finally became a free man as a result. Dylan read Rubin’s book ‘The Sixteenth Round’ which lead to him writing (with Jacques Levy) and recording the epic (more than 8 minutes long) song “Hurricane”in 1975. It was the lead off track on the 1976 Dylan album ‘Desire’. “Hurricane” was released as a single in 1975 in edited form. It reached the US top 40, number 43 in the UK and made the top ten in Australia. For me when Dylan was angry he was stunning, especially on this song.

Supposedly the Horrors always request a surprise on their gig rider. On one occasion that surprise was a girl dressed as a cat hidden inside a crate. Even the band were a little shocked and said that they realised someone was in the crate and were a little scared to open it until after the show.

“Swimming through sick lullabies, choking on your alibis”

TheKillers_700x354

Like many bands the Killers considered many names before finally settling on the Killers. At one point they apparently considered the Genius Sex Poets. I don’t know about you, but for me that would have been so much better. I can even picture it on a T Shirt. The reason they chose the Killers is thanks to New Order. It was the name of a fictitious band on the drum kit during the video for “Crystal”. Which was released the year Brandon and the gang got together; 2001. You can watch that video at the end of this post.

While we are speaking of the Killers, did you know that “Mr Brightside” has appeared in the UK charts every year since its release in 2003. This includes 35 consecutive weeks from July 2016 to March 2017. But it has never made it any higher than number 10 to date. Interestingly and rather surprisingly they have never had a UK number, well up to now anyway. But “Human”, “When You Were Young” and “Somebody Told Me” all made the top 3. But to make the band feel better all five of their studio albums hit the top spot over here in dear old Blighty.

Despite departing this mortal coil nearly two years ago David Bowie is still breaking records. He recently reached his billionth stream on Spotify. That is not the highest by any artist, I know that Drake has had more than ten billion streams of his songs. Ed Sheerhan’s “Shape Of You” has had more than a billion streams in its own right. But nonetheless a billion streams is a great achievement in my opinion. The top ten Bowie songs streamed on Spotify completely bypass anything released after 1983. The sixties has one entry, the eighties has two and the seventies a mighty seven.

david-bowie-4

In terms of albums represented by these ten songs, in reverse order it is;

Space Oddity (a.k.a. David Bowie) 1 track, Diamond Dogs (1 track), Heroes (1 track), Let’s Dance (2 tracks), Hunky Dory (2 tracks) and Ziggy Stardust (3 tracks)

The magnificent, late, great Mick Ronson was also a part of the original studio recordings of five of these tracks too.

  1. Heroes
  2. Let’s Dance (One of only two on this list to reach number one in the UK)
  3. Space Oddity (the second of two on this list to reach number one in the UK. But only after it was reissued in 1975)
  4. Life On Mars
  5. Starman
  6. Rebel Rebel
  7. Moonage Daydream (Never released as a single in the UK)
  8. Changes
  9. Ziggy Stardust
  10. Modern Love
