“welcome back my friends to the show that never ends…” February 16, 2009

Captain’s (b)Log Stardate 16022009 it’s pretty damned quiet in space, no one can hear you scream either, apparently! If only Captain James T Kirk’s ‘T’ stood for trivia, that’d be a good link, but sadly it stands for Tiberius, so these words are completely random. But to bring it back to music, have you ever heard William Shatner’s version of Pulp’s “Common People“? Do you want to? yes? well just click on the song title and tell me what you think!

So boldly onto birthdays now, starting with Sonny Bono. He would have been 74 today but sadly he died in a skiing accident in January 1998 aged 62. He is perhaps most famous for being the singing partner and husband of Cherilyn Sarkasian La Pier (more commonly know as Cher) but he also became a US Congressman in 1994. Here he is with Cher in a mildly amusing skit introducing the Jackson 5 singing “Looking Through The Windows” on the Sonny and Cher Show in the early 70’s. Apparently the All Saints song “Never Ever” was dedicated to the memory of Mr Bono, who incidentally is no relation of the short Irish chap who fronts U2.

The second and final birthday for today is that of Andy Taylor guitarist off of Duran Duran and the Power Station. Happy 48th today Mr T. Andy was one of three unrelated Taylors in Duran Duran. The other two were John Taylor (Bass) and Roger Taylor (drums). Just to confuse things further Roger Taylor was also the name of Queen’s drummer! Perhaps they should have called themselves Taylor Taylor! They actually took their name from an oft used phrase from the 60’s Jane Fonda movie “Barbarella” that phrase was “I am looking for Duran Duran” I believe the Duran in the movie was played by Miles O’Shea. Coincidentally in their early days the band played quite a few gigs at Barbarellas in Birmingham! Andy joined the band after answering an ad in the Melody Maker for a live wire guitarist! Shocking! Here is a very underrated song in my view, this is Andy Taylor with the Power Station and “Some Like It Hot” featuring the late great (did you miss those good ‘ole l n’ g’s?) Robert Palmer on vocals.

A rather unflattering shot of Andy Taylor

On this day in 1974 the three members of Emerson, Lake and Palmer (ELP) were arrested in Salt Lake City, Utah after swimming naked in their hotel pool whilst on a US tour. They were each fined $75. They were primarily an albums band and in fact when they released “Brain Salad Surgery” as a single in advance of the album of the same name in December 1973 it failed to chart in the UK. The album and single were released on the bands recently formed own label ‘Manticore’ The name comes from the name of a supposedly mythical beast that battled the armoured armadillo called Tarkus on the album, “Tarkus”. They did have one massively successful single though, it was their interpretation of the American composer Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare For The Common Man” which reached number 2 in the UK charts in July 1977. That was pretty damned good for a bunch of ‘old farts’ at the height of punk!

On this day in 1991 the Simpsons were number one in the UK singles chart with “Do The Bartman” lyrics provide by one Michael Jackson! They never had a number one hit in the UK again (well so far anyway) but the marvellous “Spider Pig” reached the top 30 in 2007.

And finally on this day in 2002 thieves broke into George Michael’s London house and made off in his £80,000 Aston Martin DB7 with £100,000s worth of paintings, jewelery and designer clothes. They also caused more than £200,000s worth of damage to his home. I don’t know who they were, but the must have been “Bad Boys” <groan!!!!> Incidentally the song was a number two UK hit for George and Andrew in 1983. I’m not sure who the lass in the fat suit in the video is though, any ideas?

George obviously very camp but not so obviously out and gay in the 80s

“Everything you think do or say, is in the pill you took today” February 15, 2009

Good morning/ afternoon/ evening/ night everyone. Incidentally it’s morning for me, I so wanted to sleep but I couldn’t so I’m up before 7am on a Sunday morning. Is that an age thing perhaps? Do I need less sleep now I’m older? OK so before I start I recently borrowed the DVD of ‘Wall-E’ and finally watched it last night, now that is a superb movie. If you haven’t seen it yet shame on you! Here is the Peter Gabriel song “Down To Earth” from the film.

-)

I love this little dude 🙂

OK so now let’s get back to business as nearly normal, starting with a few birthdays. Brian Holland of the classic Motown songwriting team Holland-Dozier-Holland is 68 today, 15th February. He is one of the Hollands in the team (obviously…doh!) along with his brother Eddie and Lamont Dozier. The guys wrote at least 25 US number one singles in a phenomenal career. Check out the Four Tops with “Reach Out I’ll Be There” probably my favourite HDH song. When they left Motown, somewhat acrimoniously in the 60s they went on to set up Invictus Records and wrote another string of hits. It has been alleged that the songs they wrote for the ‘Chairmen Of The Board’, one of Invictus’ most successful groups, would have been recorded by the Four Tops had HDH stayed with Motown. Listen to “Give Me Just A Little More Time” and tell me if you think it would have worked as a Four Tops song. I’m sure it would! And here for the hell of it is the Kylie Minogue version…. and why not?

2 x Hollands + 1 Dozier = Classic Motown

2 x Hollands + 1 Dozier = Classic Motown

The second and final of the birthdays today is that of Denny Zager (off of Zager and Evans) who is 65 today (according to my books, but Wiki says 18th February), will he live until the year 2525 we wonder though! Yep the Zager and Evans duo could almost define the “One Hit Wonder” phrase (it’s such a shame that Robbie W didn’t stop at one hit!) with their classic 1969 hit “In The Year 2525” The song was at number one in the US charts when Apollo 11 reached the moon in July 1969.

On this day in 1968 the Lennons and Harrisons arrived in India to study meditation with the Maharishi. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr arrived 4 days later. Ringo left shortly afterwards claiming that it was like a stay in a Butlins Holiday Camp. John Lennon went on to write about their experiences with the Maharishi in the song “Sexy Sadie” from the White Album. He apparently changed the title from it’s original “Maharishi” to “Sexy Sadie” at the request of George Harrison. It was also the last song that Lennon wrote on that trip to India

On this day in 1961 the Marcels recorded the classic (yes I know yet another classic!) “Blue Moon” Click on the song title to hear the song and watch a most bizarre film accompanying it, it even features Spongebob Squarepants! But back to the Marcels, the group were named after a popular early 60s hair style the Marcell Wave and the lead singer was the wonderfully named Cornelius Harp. That has to be one of the best names in the history of rock!

And finally for today a couple of bands for you to check out and I would love to know what you think of them. Firstly a band I went to see on Tuesday night this week at Fibbers in York. It’s the second time I’ve seen them and they are rather excellent, they are called “Lights In The Sky” check them out on MySpace www.myspace.com/litsband

Also check out Steal The Smile too, they are my son Luke’s band, they’ve written some excellent songs and are looking for gigs, so if any promoters are reading this get in touch with them! Check them out on MySpace www.myspace.com/stealthesmile

“nothing more, nothing less, love is the best!” February 14, 2009

Happy Valentine’s day good people and before we start the proceedings with a classic love song here’s a useless but interesting fact. UK singer Dickie Valentine, in spite of his name, had no hits about this wonderful day for lovers, but he did have three Christmas hits in the UK charts during the early 50s. So tell me did you all remember to do something nice for your partner/ lover/ cousin (Arkansas only!)/ Sheep (New Zealand/ Wales only)? Either way, have a great day and to kick things off here are Madness with a superb love song “It Must Be Love“. You can hear the original version of the song if you click on Labi Siffre’s name too

So enough of the love stuff (or maybe not!) and on to the birthdays. Today would have been the 62nd birthday of the late great (l & g’s here they come again) Tim Buckley who died of a morphine and heroin overdose in 1975. Sadly his son Jeff Buckley also died young after wading into the Mississippi for a swim during the recording of his second album in 1997. If you’re a fan of the UK band Starsailor you probably already know that they named themselves after Tim Buckley’s 1970 album “Starsailor”, prior to that they were known as Waterface. I’m not a fan, but the new name is so much better. Check out Tim singing his absolute classic “Song To The Siren” Click on the song title to hear Jeff’s version of the great Leonard Cohen song “Hallelujah” recently a big hit again in the UK, sadly somewhat surpassed by the Alexandra Burke version. Three of Tim Buckley’s albums feature in the book ‘1001 albums to hear before you die’ Tim quit the music business for a year in 1972 and worked as a chauffer and a taxi driver. That same year he also made a cameo appearance in the movie “Why?” with none other than that nice bloke everybody loves……… OJ Simpson

The final birthday for today is that of Kenny Hyslop who is 58 today. Pardon me? Did you say who the hell is Kenny Hyslop? Aaah I see, well ok then, Mr Hyslop is a drummer and found fame with numerous beat combos including Slik (of whom more later) The Skids and Simple Minds. Kenny’s first step in the music biz ladder was to join the band ‘Salvation’ with one Midge Ure, remember him? Anyway that band later became ‘Slik’ and here they are performing their UK number one from 1976, “Forever and Ever” NOT a cover of the Demis Roussos song but strangely sounding very similar to the Bay City Rollers in my opinion. This was back in the days when Midge had hair, but let’s be fair, even I did then!

back to the usual On This day format again now and on February 14th 1970 the Who recorded the excellent album “Live At Leeds” at Leeds University in the UK. A bit of an obvious title, but it does what it says on the tin and is one of my favourite live albums. Have a listen to the live version of “Substitute” from that very album. A few weeks before that recording, in January 1970 Keith Moon accidentally ran over and killed his chauffeur, Neil Boland while trying to escape from a gang of skinheads outside a club in Hatfield, Herts in the UK. Keith was famously a non-driver, I guess that proves why!

Also on this day in 1977 singer songwriter Janis Ian received 461 Valentine Cards after fans took to heart the comment in her excellent song “At Seventeen” where she claimed she had never received any. As usual click the song title to hear the song

Love really must have been in the air when the then very much in the closet Elton John married recording engineer Renate Blauer…. a woman! as you’d expect it didn’t last too long and Elton is now very much ‘out’ and famously gay. Incidentally you may know that he used to be called Reginald Dwight, but did you know that his real name now is in fact Elton Hercules John. The Hercules picked from the old UK sitcom, ‘Steptoe and Son’ where the loveable old cart horse was called ironically, ‘Hercules’. So there we have it, an Elton John Valentine tale, so what better song to celebrate it with than Elton’s very own “Kiss The Bride“
Elton was gutted when he saw his bill for the wedding...........<groan!>

And for no other reason than that it is a truly awsome pic that someone sent me yesterday let’s end with a Star Wars picture. What do you think of it?

“another day older and deeper in debt….” February 13, 2009

1, 2, 3, 4 dun dur dun, dun dur dun etc. What the bloody hell was that I can hear you say? well I just fancied beginning todays blog just like the Ramones started all their songs mainly because I wanted to add “Sheena Is A Punk Rocker” to todays post and there is no “on this day” Ramones news for today as far as I’m aware. Play it, pogo around the office, kitchen, bus, train, coffee bar, internet cafe, toilet or shed and enjoy! If I could have been in any band in the world ever I think I would have picked the Ramones, Billy Ramone sounds kind of ok too 🙂

Here are da brudders with one of my heroes.....Homer Simpson

Here are da brudders with one of my heroes.....Homer Simpson

Also I hope that all you triskaidekophobics have been ok today and nothing bad has befallen you.

OK back to the usual stuff you’ve come to know and love dear friends and readers. Starting with those birthdays. Firstly it’s my Mum’s birthday today, she is 73, Happy Birthday Mum 🙂

Tennessee Ernie Ford would have been 90 today, but sadly he died nearly 20 years ago. He was responsible for giving Capitol Records their first number one of the rock era in the US with the song “Sixteen Tons” It was number one in the US in 1955 and in the UK in 1956, now that was even before I was born, so that is REALLY old!

Tennessee or Mr Ford to you, but to me.......Ernie

Tennessee or Mr Ford to you, but to me.......Ernie

second up on the aging fast stakes, well he’s older than me anyway, is Mr Peter Gabriel who is 59 today. I suppose he’ll be going out for a Lamb Bhuna and a skinful in New York and then lying down on Broadway. (such an appaling reference, is anyone reading this warped enough to get it I wonder?) my favourite Peter Gabriel song is “Solsbury Hill” I also preferred Genesis with Gabriel at the helm as opposed to the bloody singing drummer!. The song is actually all about Gabriels departure from the band. The video for Gabriel’s song Sledgehammer was co produced by Aardman Animations who later went on to massive worldwide success with Wallace and Gromit. Peter also won a grammy for his soundtrack to the Scorcese movie “The Last Temptation Of Christ” which bizarrely starred David Bowie as Pontius Pilate. I’m am one of Bowie’s biggest fans, but he’s certainly no actor, well not in my opinion anyway, apart from perhaps “The Man Who Fell To Earth” in which he pretty much played himself!

Today, February 13th, is also the 53rd birthday of Peter Hook, most well known as a member of Joy Division and New Order (also Revenge and Monaco). He was also married to actress/ comedienne Caroline Aherne. I reckon he’s a damned good bass player too. Supposedly he is currently working on a new band project called Freebass with bass players Mani (The Stone Roses/ Primal Scream and Andy Rourke (The Smiths). Recently he has also performed as a DJ; though numerous videos recorded of him live show him doing nothing more than allegedly playing a free CD included in Mixmag, a DJ magazine. For me and especially as it is Valentines Day tomorrow and this song was number two in the NME’s list of alternative love songs this week, here is “Love Will Tear Us Apart” by the wonderful and late great Joy Division.

And finally, for the birthdays at least it is the birthday of one of my least favourite artists, ladies and gentlemen I give you Mr Robbie Williams who is 35 today. In my opinion Robbie is a highly overrated and untalented George Michael wannabe (words crossed out on advice from my legal team) This part of the blog does not necessarily reflect my opinion ok, I really do not like Mr Williams. But I know that many of you do, so here he is with what in my opinion is an awful song, why do people love bloody “Angels” so much? Anyway just click on the song title to hear the “fat dancer from Take That” (copyright Noel Gallagher) sing the song live at Knebworth. When Robbie released the “Rudebox” single in 2006, the British tabloid paper The Sun called it “The Worst Song Ever” and as much as it pains me to say it about such a vile publication I agree with them. To finish Robbie off (now there’s a thought) did you know that when Take That broke up after Robbie left them they announced the split on Robbie’s 24th birthday?

Robbie in his Bill Oddie disguise

On this day 1974 David Bowie (yes that’s two Bowie references in one day……yippeee!) turned down an offer from the Gay Liberation group to compose “the worlds first Gay National Anthem” Whatever it was it would have been more exciting than the current British national anthem, that is soooooo dull. Actually I bet a lot of you didn’t know this but Scotland, Ireland and Wales all have their own National anthem but England does it. Maybe we should have a vote on what it should be, my vote goes to “God save The Queen” by the Sex Pistols, what do you think?

So to finish we go to yet another Bowie reference, but this time it’s the superb Flight Of The Concords with the hilarious “Bowie” click n laugh!

Dead Folks poll

“and we all shine on!” February 12, 2009

OK hold on tight folks here comes todays poptastic triviatastic tidbits to turn down the lights on your otherwise exciting lives. As I type this dispatch I can still see the snow outside. I’ve been to Manchester today, no snow there, but back here in York we’ve got bucket loads. It’s snow joke is it?

before I start though let me thank 1)Vik, 2)Nic and 3)Nick (ain’t that a coincidence!) for being the first to pass comment on the blog. Incidentally did anyone get the “Where’s Wally/ Waldo” piece in yesterdays post?

Anyway sticking like superglue or chewing gum on public transport I will stay with the On This Day theme. So firstly let’s get the birthdays out of the way. Had he not died on 11th September 1987 Lorne Greene (does that sound like a garden treatment to anyone else?) would have been 94. Many of you (well those born in the 50’s or 60’s) may remember from the fabulous, but somewhat dated “Bonanza.” If you don’t remember it just ask your Mum or your Grandma, I bet they will. He also appeared in Peyton Place, Roots and Battlestar Galactica (the 80s version) Anyway Mr Greene was not only an actor but also a singer (well if you listen to the song by clicking it’s title you may think more of a talker than a singer), so successful in fact that he had a US number one single with a song called “Ringo” which as far as I know was not about a drummer. With this hit he became only the second Canadian to have a US number 1.

Lorne even gets a mention in the ‘Donnie Darko’ movie. In the scene where a PTA meeting discusses a proposal to ban graham Greene’s (no relation to Lorne Greene) “The Destructors” When a critic of the ban is asked “Do you even know who Graham Greene is?” she scoffs, “I think we’ve all seen ‘Bonanza’ And finally, Mr Greene’s youngest daughter, Gillian, is married to the film director Sam Raimi.

How many gallons is that titfer?

How many gallons is that titfer?

Another birthday today is Jim Creeggan’s he is the bass player for the ‘Barenaked Ladies’ and is 39 today. The band had a massive hit with the excellent “One Week” in 1999 (no 1 in the US no 5 in the UK) . Check out a version of the song by Morgan Freeman. The band signed their contract with Sire Records at City Hall in a direct snub to then Mayor, June Rowlands, who two years earlier had prevented the band from performing at the citys Nathan Phillips Square because she claimed that their name ‘objectified women’

On this day in 1970 the late great (hey the l’s and g’s are back)John Lennon appeared on ‘Top Of The Pops’ performing “Instant Karma” thus becoming the first solo to perform on the show and the first Beatle to appear on it since 1966. This classic song was produced by Phil Spector and also featured George Harrison on guitar. It is also my favourite Lennon song. Check out the dancing and Yoko’s performance too

John and Yoko

And finally on this day in 2005 a train was named after the late great (back with a vengeance today) Mr Joe Strummer who sadly dies in 2002 aged just 50. The Diesel Train, owned by Cotswold Rail was named in an official ceremony in Bristol. So how best could I bring this back to music? Well obviously, in spite the fact it’s a Mick Jones vocal, it has to be “Train In Vain” by the rather excellent Clash! On a final note and also to say that Lily Allen’s new album is wonderful, Joe Strummer was Lily’s godfather!

A train named after Joe Strummer - how cool is that?

OK sleep tight fact fans and don’t let the bed bugs bite 🙂

“Billy liked to peel the labels from his bottle of Bud” February 11, 2009

Keeping with the “On This Day” format for another day (that day being February 11th) let’s start with some birthdays shall we? Alrighty then! Somewhere in todays post there is a kind of musical “Where’s Wally/ Waldo?” competition, in this case it’s “Where’s Ian (Dury)?” can you find him or are you a Blockhead?

Bobby ‘Boris’ Pickett would have been 69 (or 71 according to some sources) today had he not died aged 67 (or indeed 69 according to some sources too!) in 2007. He bought us the wonderful “Monster Mash” which is still the staple of many Halloween parties. He gave some great vocal impressions of Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi in that song. He also rerecorded it as “Climate Mash” in October 2005 in protest at the lack of action against Global warming. That alone makes him a great guy in my books! Anyway here are Pans People dancing to the song in 1973. Are those costumes rubbish or what? Oh and I almost forgot, there is indeed an official Monster Mash site too, check it out!

Now that's just how I normally dance!

Now that's just how I normally dance!

Today is also the 46th birthday (although Wikipedia suggests 47) of Sheryl Crow, my fave song of hers is “All I Wanna Do” what’s yours? Sheryl used to be one of Michael Jacksons backing singers on the “Bad” tour and covered the Siedah Garret parts on “I Just Cant’ Stop Loving You” every gig. You can see the duet from a 1987 show in Munich if you click the song title. Sheryl has some serious big 80s hair, but of that I guess I’m just jealous! Check the pic below is this what Springsteen is singing about on his new album in “Queen Of The Supermarket”?

Finally on the birthdays front today is also the 32nd birthday of Mike Shinoda rhythm guitarist, keyboardist, songwriter, rapper with Linkin Park. He does Graphic Design too, he’s a right clever bastard ain’t he? Here are the band in their collaboration with Jay Z (or as my friend Karen McP refers to him, Jay Zed) on “Numb” Here is Mike as a Plushie. Isn’t there some kind of weird sexual fetish relating to Plushies?

On February 11th 1973 a local charity in Auckland New Zealand raised £500 by auctioning the bedding used by the Rolling Stones when they stayed in the city for a gig. I can’t imagine it was particularly clean, there must have been enough bodily fluids to clone the whole band. Hmmmmmm……… maybe that’s why Keef is still rockin’! Here are the Stones with the excellent (in my opinion) country pastiche “Far Away Eyes” from the “Some Girls” album. Strangely this is one of my fave Stones song. Check out this great painting of the Stones by the sdaly departed Dutch Artist Guy Paellart.

On this day in 1987 the Smiths were sitting pretty at the top of the UK Indie charts with the classic (but then most Smiths songs are) “Shoplifters Of The World Unite” Click on the song title to see them doing the song live on the UK music programme “The Tube” in 1986. I’ve heard Morrissey’s new album and it sounds pretty damned good, I think it’s out next month. Johnny Marr is currently recording with the Cribs too I believe. Here is the classic picture of the band outside the Salford Lads Club in Salford (Obviously!) near Manchester in the UK.

The Smiths outside the Salford Lads Club

On February the 11th 1986 Boy George made his cringeworthy appearance in an episode of the “A Team“. Click on the show’s name to watch a clip from an embarrassing TV moments show where you can also get a feel for just how bad it actually was. Here is a strange picture of the Boy! I hope he doesn’t make up like that in prison, hell have to spend hours in the showers…….. hmmmmmm 😉

He really should change his stylist!

He really should change his stylist!

And finally on this day in 2003 the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) announced the biggest single year drop in sales since the advent of CDs. They blamed it on piracy, illegal duplication, and the distribution of CDs by international criminals. So obviously nothing to do with them selling overpriced crap (like Robbie Williams) then!

Captain Pugwash looking for some overpriced CDs to steal

Captain Pugwash looking for some overpriced CDs to steal

Obviously it would be rude to raise the urban myths about Captain Pugwash and mention Seaman Stains and Roger The Cabin Boy. Although let’s face it the would fit nicely into the pieces about the Rolling Stones and Boy George respectively. Oh well never mind, I won’t raise it and bring todays post to a close. Bye for now dear reader 🙂

Today would have been the 80th birthday of Jerry Goldsmith who created the music for some classic TV series (Star Trek, Planet Of The Apes, The Man From U.N.C.L.E, Dr Kildare and the Waltons “G’night Jerry Boy!”). He died on July 21st 2004 from cancer aged 75. His film scores were nominated 18 times for Oscars, but he only won one, for “The Omen” So I will use this to show the long gone opening sequence to “The Man From U.N.C.L.E” Enjoy!

It is Roberta Flack’s 72nd birthday. She was born in 1937 in Black Mountain in the US, we just don’t have place names like that in the UK do we? What do we get? Slough, Grimsby and ………. Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. How about “is This The Way To Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch”anyone?
Thanks to it’s use in the Clint Eastwood movie “Play Misty For Me” Flack’s version of the Ewan MacColl’s song “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” became a massive hit in 1972 and remained at the top of the US charts for 6 weeks. It was the longest run at the top of the US charts for a female singer since 1956 (That was “The Wayward Wind” by Gogi Grant). It went on to sell more than 2 million copies. Incidentally fact fans Ewan MacColl is the late great Kirsty MacColl’s Dad. Roberta was also credited as producer of her second album “Feel Like Makin’ Love” (don’t we all?) she used a great pseudonym, Rubina Flake. Roberta with the late great Donny Hathaway

On this day in 1972 David Bowie appeared at the Tolworth Toby Jug (It doesn’t really have the same ring as Carnegie Hall New York does it?) in London on the opening date of the Ziggy Stardust tour. Actually might have been the first official date but I seem to recall that he and the Spiders played a tour warm up gig at Friars in Aylesbury. Incidentally he played Carnegie Hall later that year, it was his first ever New York gig and it was a sell out.
I really wanted to see Mr Bowie on that tour when it came back to the UK in 1973. It would have been my first ever gig too. In fact the gig I might have gone to was to be the final Ziggy show “This is not only the last show of this tour, it’s also the last show we’ll ever do” was what he said that night. Anyway I wasn’t allowed to see Bowie as my Dad said he’s too bloody weird. In the end I did see my first gig later in 1973 it was the Jackson 5. Shortly before my Dad died in 2001 we had a rather amusing conversation about this in the sense of who turned out to be the most weird in the end? Clearly Jacko hands down (but down what exactly?) in my opinion. In the meantime check out The Dame himself singing the Jaques Brel song “My Death” at that last ever Ziggy gig.

Weird? Well maybe my Dad had a point in those days LOL

Weird? Well maybe my Dad had a point in those days LOL

On this day in 1977 The Clash began recording their first album at the CBS studios in London. It took just three weekends to record the 14 tracks, it was released in April that year. It’s probably still my favourite album from the punk period alongside “Never Mind The Bollocks” from the Sex Pistols. Following the albums release they embarked on the short lived “White Riot” tour, which started on 1st May and ended on 29th May. The support bands were the Jam and the Buzzcocks

Good cover, but I prefer the "London Calling" cover personally

Good cover, but I prefer the "London Calling" cover personally

And finally on this day in 1942 Glenn Miller became the first person to be awarded a Gold Disc for 1.2 million sales of “Chattanooga Choo Choo”. It was the number one song in the USA 7th December 1941 the day of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. The song has often been the subject of what now seems a very old and tired and widely varied joke (like most of mine I hear you cry!), which makes a play on the lyrics, “Pardon me boy, is that the Chattanooga Choo Choo?” Rather than those words, the man walking with Roy Rogers says, “Pardon me Roy, is that the cat who chewed your new shoes?”

OK in fact I’m late with this one, the late and exceptionally great Robert Nesta Marley would have been 64 on 6th February. Although his passport actually stated April 6th. His father was an English army Captain, Norval Sinclair Marley originally from Liverpool in the UK. So not only are the Beatles roots in Liverpool, so are Bob Marley’s!

Sadly he succumbed to cancer on May 11th 1981 aged just 36. The disease began after he injured a toe playing football (soccer to those of you across the big pond) allegedly following a tackle from Journalist/ Broadcaster Danny Baker. His Rastafarian beliefs meant he refused to have the toe amputated, this might have saved him.

I became a Bob Marley fan quite early I suppose, probably around 1972 when Johnny Nash released his excellent “I Can See Clearly Now” album. What’s Johhny Nash got to do with it I hear you say? Well Mr Nash, as far as I am aware had the first UK and US hit with a Marley song, “Stir It Up”. This song dear friends was the first Bob Marley song I ever heard when it hit the UK charts in 1972 when I had just become a fully fledged teenage delinquent. On the “I Can See Clearly Now” album Johnny also covered three more Marley songs “Guava Jelly”, “Comma Comma” and “You Poured Sugar On Me”. You can see Bob singing “Stir It Up” here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6U-TGahwvs

The anorak in me meant that I always read the names of the composer and tried to find out more about them, so I started searching for the then elusive Marley When I eventually found out who he was I was really impressed I borrowed the “Catch A Fire” album from one of my school friends older brothers. Of course I made the obligatory (in those days anyway) cassette tape of the album and played it so much it wore out.

Eventually I bought my first Bob album in 1975, that was “Live At The Lyceum” and to this day that remains one of my favourite Marley albums. It contains, for me, the definitive version of the classic song “No Woman No Cry” definitely one of my all time favourites. It only managed number 22 in the UK charts though. This is one of the songs I want played at my funeral, maybe that will be an upcoming blog theme, songs for funerals. What do you think?

There is a great story behind the song too. When Marley was a struggling musician he was often helped out by a man called Vincent Ford who ran a soup kitchen in Kingston Jamaica. In return for all that assistance Bob gave Vincent Ford the writing credits for “No Woman No Cry”. Now that is generosity! Another thing that often gets misconstrued about the song is the meaning of title. It is written and sung as it would be spoken in Jamaican patois. It doesn’t mean he won’t cry because he doesn’t have a woman, Marley is asking his woman not to cry.

Check it out yourself and let me know what you think http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4u2GpQzEu3Y

Bob Marley was often described as the first Third World Superstar and he certainly lived up to that with his support of change in Africa and indeed the politics of his home, Jamaica. In fact he was seen as such a strong and influential figure that an attempt was made on his life on December 3rd 1976. Shortly afterwards he went into self-imposed exile from Jamaica for around 16 months. On his return in April 1978 he and the Wailers headlined the “One Love Peace Concert” in Kingston where he famously united the then Prime Minister Michael Manley and his political opponent Edward Seaga. He probably would have had a lot to say about the current horrible state of affairs in Mugabe’s Zimbabwe. probably more so than many of today’s spineless political leaders. In fact Marley played live with the Wailers at the Zimbabwe Independence celebrations in April 1980

Marley was father to 13 children some of whom have followed him into the music business. Stephen, Damian and Ziggy with a good degree of success.

Another Marley favourite for me is “Punky Reggae Party” which first appeared as the B Side to the “Jammin” single in the UK in February 1978. He tried to sum up how close punk and reggae had become in the UK during 1976/77. A great party tune and as a bonus he name checks a number of bands in the lyrics; the Wailers (obviously), the Maytals, Dr. Feelgood, the Damned, the Jam and the Clash (now they were truly a great band!). The song was co written with another reggae great, Lee “Scratch” Perry. Who also produced the Clash single “Complete Control”

I don’t have many regrets in my life, but one is that I didn’t take an opportunity to see Marley live in 1978. I was on a lads holiday in Spain in 1978 (you know the type – birds, booze, sun and sand) and Marley and the Wailers were playing in Barcelona which was just 30 minutes from our resort. There were tickets available but the holiday rep convinced us that we would get a serious beating from the mostly Spanish crowd, stupidly we took his advice and didn’t go

If you don’t have any Bob Marley in your collection I have one thing to say to you! Why? Go out and rectify things tomorrow, the best place to start would be to buy the Legend compilation. If you don’t have sufficient funds just sell all your Robbie Williams CD’s on E Bay, that should raise at least 5% of the cost if you’re lucky 🙂 You will come to know that I am not a fan of Robbies in anyway shape or form! You should check out the official Bob Marley page on MySpace too, you can hear four classic songs including his original version of “Stir It Up” which not only is a great song but also rather rude in a double entendre kind of way. “push the wood to light the fire” indeed 🙂 www.myspace.com/bobmarley

So to finish my first post here are a couple of great quotes from Mr Marley;

“Me only have one ambition, y’know. I only have one thing I really like to see happen. I like to see mankind live together – black, white, Chinese, everyone – that’s all” – I think we can all agree with that!

“Herb is the healing of a nation, alcohol is the destruction” – personally I’ve always preferred alcohol to weed, but to each their own!

“My music will go on forever. Maybe it’s a fool say that, but when me know facts me can say facts. My music will go on forever” – he was right about that!

And finally a word from Bart Marley 🙂

Welcome to my new blog, it will largely cover music but I will probably talk about lots of other exciting crap too! I may try and post everyday, but don’t count on it!

What kind of music do I like? Too much I suppose, but I grew up on an eclectic diet of David Bowie (maybe some of you can spot the Bowie reference in the blog name?), Motown, Reggae and Punk with some nuggets of guilty pleasure thrown in occasionally. So expect to hear about some of that stuff

I also love the trivia of music, yep you’re right, I’m an anorak! So read on, hopefully enjoy and please comment!

Thanks

Bill
