The Mayhem Charts – December 2023 January 6, 2024

Here is the Mayhem chart for December 2023. Regular readers will know the chart is based on my Spotify listening habits over the last month. The chart remains contemporary-ish, rather than just an oldies chart However, the top three “Legacy” artists are Elvis Costello, Kate Bush, and Bobby Darin, and surprisingly David Bowie is not in the top 3. There is a top ten artists chart and a top 5 songs chart. There is the usual eclectic mix of artists, including three who were in the top ten last month (ALT BLK ERA, Delilah Bon, and tiLLie). In fact, this is now the fifth month in a row that ALT BLK ERA has featured in the artist’s top ten. Only two of the top five songs are by artists which feature in the top ten artist chart. Those two are Rebecca Ferguson and Jazmin Bean. girli and UGLY CLUB remain in the song top five from last month with UGLY CLUB moving up from 5 to 2 and girli moving from 3 to the summit! In case you are interested the top three Christmas tunes for December were “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” by Darlene Love, “Christmas Time (Don’t Let The Bells End)” by the Darkness, and “Proper Christmas” by the Krackpots. So without further ado here are those charts! Click on the header of the song chart for the playlist on Spotify.

“Jigsaw” – Pick The Flowers January 5, 2024

Chloe Munt oozes talent and following some absolutely stunning tracks in recent years when fronting My Wonderful Daze and Please Remain Calm she is back as her solo alter ego Pick The Flowers. Her new single, “Jigsaw”, is haunting and emotional. Chloe’s musical versatility has no bounds and this new song shows her skill as an electronic artist. She certainly doesn’t allow herself to be genre-boxed, this tune is very, very different from her previous bands’ much heavier output. I would love to hear a dance remix of “Jigsaw”. I think it would work really well. Check out this gorgeous tune now! It is available on all streaming platforms.

‘Heaven, Pt. II’ – Rebecca Ferguson

Regular readers know I have shown disdain and been somewhat disparaging about X-Factor and its predecessors and similar “talent” shows. However, there have been a few exceptions that came close to making me rethink those views. But even Harry Styles, who I believe is an incredibly talented artist has moved me to change my mind. He is one of the exceptions produced by the show in my opinion. Have there been others? Will Young is excellent and, Girls Aloud were ok, but the new album by Rebecca Ferguson, who finished second to Matt Cardle on X-Factor in 2010 and pushed One Direction to third place, is bloody good. More of that in a moment. As with all finalists she released a top-ten single, “Nothing’s Real But Love” off the back of the show. She followed that with four UK top-ten albums from 2011 to 2016.

Rebecca performed at the Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool, her home city, last year

Since then she has suffered terribly thanks to the extreme misogyny that sadly still exists within the music industry. She has used that experience to push for change in the industry and has appeared before a House Of Commons Women and Equalities Committee, whom she told that she was “fleeced” both “financially and morally” by executives and others in positions of power, whose “disgusting” conduct was part of a “rotten” culture. She added, “Unfortunately there is a bullying culture to make artists behave how people want them to, often for others’ commercial gains.” The committee heard that Rebecca was pressured into signing contracts; was denied royalties and medical attention; had personal and professional relationships deliberately wrecked; and was forced to carry on working after collapsing through exhaustion and having a miscarriage. She is one of the driving forces and key voices behind a new body called the Creative Industry Independent Standards Authority (Ciisa), which will investigate complaints in the music, film, theatre, and TV industries. Rebecca has also said “For so long, I harboured those secrets for very powerful men about what they were doing to me, and the truth of what was happening to me is it was a form of abuse. In fact, it wasn’t a form of abuse, it was abuse.” adding “The sad reality is it is an abuse that many creatives – be it models, actors, musicians or singers – go through, and we harbour the secrets“.

Rebecca has written, recorded, and released the new album, ‘Heaven Pt. II’ independently. I exchanged a few comments with Rebecca on Twitter when I saw her announce the album’s release. I said that I have huge respect for what she has done in calling out the misogyny, abuse, and vileness that exists in the music industry, but that I wasn’t a great fan of her music. She suggested that I at least give the album a spin, so I did. If I had listened to it earlier it might have made it into Mayhem’s top 20 albums for 2023. It is an album that exudes emotion, and highlights struggle but has incredible strength and positivity throughout. This suggests to me that Rebecca Ferguson is not just a talented singer-songwriter and performer but also a wonderful human being. Overall the album is a fabulous slice of modern R&B, but it has so many other influences and themes. There is also pop, electronic, and hip-hop among others.

I think I might target one of these dates!

The album kicks off with “Digging For Gold” a song with a message of hope in adversity. The lyrics are inspirational, “I’m just surviving by the skin of my teeth but tomorrow’s just another day” kicks off the chorus. The production on this track is perfect. Next comes “I’m Going To Love You” which wears it’s gospel influences with pride. Rebecca’s voice is deeply soulful here and at times has a feel of one of her heroines, Aretha Franklin. “From Now On” has a guitar sound that made me think of New Order. Lyrically it perhaps deals with some of the things that Rebecca has been through, “I figured I’ll take my chance and choose the life I want“. “Shallow Breathing” is an epic power ballad and it feels like a celebration of being loved. The vocal performance from Rebecca on this song is stupendous, it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and I even shed a little happy tear. If you like listening to songs with a 100% positive vibe, then play “I Have A Dream” It will lift you, I promise. If the Spice Girls ever decided to reform and record new songs they should definitely cover “Diamonds In Her Shoes”, although they might do the song justice I doubt that they would be able to top Rebecca Ferguson’s supreme performance. The hook and chorus stick with you long after the song has ended and I love the strings. I felt that “Found My Voice” sums up how Ferguson felt when she finally decided to move on up and do things her way. Once again there is a magnificent gospel feel and how can you not love this track. I am not sure how personal “Hollywood” is, but is a cinematic pop-rock tune that would make a great single. “Run Rebecca” is a fun song with some wonderful rap input and feels like Rebecca is showcasing her lack of fear in her life now. The album closes with “You Don’t Have To Leave” and frankly I didn’t want to leave this collection of gorgeous tunes, so I played the album again and again! I don’t know who the musicians who played on the record are but the music throughout is spot on. Ferguson appears to have worked with several co-writers and producers on the album, but for me, that simply enhances her own talent. Give this album a try, you will not regret it! Rebecca says that this will be her last album, I hope that is not true.

On This Day There Were Two Virgins An Audition And A Producer! January 3, 2024

The original post had the album cover, but it was against Facebook’s community standards, so I have updated it!

When I started this blog nearly fifteen years ago the early posts were largely music trivia, often “on this day” related. Then I went on to focus more on reviews. So as a treat and inspired by receiving Justin Lewis‘ excellent almanac ‘Don’t Stop The Music – A Year Of Pop History One Day At A Time‘ as a Christmas present from my fabulous wife Catwoman (a.k.a. Catherine) I plan to add in quite a few on this day style posts in 2024. The first few will be from that book, but not all will. I will kick off with a bonus of three, one for 1st January, one for 2nd January, and another for today (3rd January). All three are Beatles-related, just “Because…” The first of these facts is that acclaimed music producer and the man often referred to as the fifth Beatle, George Martin was born on 3rd January 1926.

On 2nd January 1968, The entire shipment of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s album ‘Two Virgins’ was seized by authorities in New Jersey due to the controversial full-frontal nude photograph of the pair on the cover. The album was eventually wrapped in plain brown paper in record stores. The album is a venture into the avant-garde side of music by Lennon, which is interesting because he once declared that the phrase avant-garde was “French for shit”

On 1st January 1961 the Fabs recorded some songs as a demo for Decca Records and were turned down in favour of Brian Poole and the Tremeloes. Five of those songs were eventually released officially on ‘Anthology Volume 1’ in 1995. The songs included there were “Searchin'”, “Three Cool Cats”, “The Sheik Of Araby”, “Like Dreamers Do” and “Hello Little Girl”.

Mayhem’s 12 Days Of Christmas – Day 12 – Delilah Bon December 24, 2023

Well, here we are at the end of our journey through Mayhem’s 12 Days Of Christmas for 2023. Regular readers will know that this year I have used the series to showcase artists featured in Spotify’s Misfits 2.0 playlist. Some of them I discovered via Misfits 2.0, others I was already a huge fan of. Today’s post features the obscenely talented Delilah Bon, probably my favourite living artist. Since “Devil” in July 2020 she has released some stunning songs plus a great EP, ‘Ready To Kill’ and a self-titled debut album that blew away the competition in 2021. I believe that we might see her sophomore album in 2024, I certainly hope so.

Delilah Bon is the alter ego of Lauren Tate of Hands Off Gretel. In her approach to life, her attitude, and especially her music she stands up for women and girls and the whole LGBTQ+ community and frankly she is an inspirational icon for anyone who dares to be different. She has had a great year with a trio of classic singles, “I Wish A Bitch Would”, “Brat” and the magnificent “Witch”. She enlisted the help of ALT BLK ERA on the latter, another act that featured in this year’s 12 Days of Christmas posts. In addition, I have also showcased WARGASM, Royal and the Serpent, Poppy, Girli, tiLLie, 100 gecs, Casseyette, FKA Rayne, Scene Queen, and Jazmin Bean. Delilah Bon has played some excellent support slots this year for Scene Queen and Shaka Ponk. Earlier this year she performed “War On Women” on French TV’s biggest music programme Taratata. In her music she embraces hip-hop, punk, rap, and metal. If you do not have Delilah Bon in your life yet, why the hell not?

Spirit Of The Hawk – York Vaults – Thursday 14th December 2023 December 23, 2023

Tags: , , , , , , ,

Following on from the rather wonderful Summer Solstice Shenanigans in June at this very venue Spirit Of The Hawk is back with a Winter Solstice Spectacular. The first of the support bands was Chiang featuring some of Bradford’s finest musicians. They smashed into a stunning, incendiary set full of punk and metal energy. I am a new Chiang fan! Next up was one of York’s best bands, Soma Crew, who supported the Summer Solstice Shenanigans. They brought their “A-Game” drone skills with a collection of tunes that flow into your psyche and make you feel good. As usual, they throw in some exquisite curveballs; grunge tones, Floyd and maybe Can. Their rich sound was enhanced on a few tracks by the addition of a slide guitar. Just when you think that Soma Crew might have peaked, they do this and you know they are still on that upward curve.

Finally, it was time for this Winter Solstice Spectacular to kick into overdrive as Spirit Of The Hawk took the stage. Once again including members of Percy and Soma Crew. This was a supreme sonic fest that showcased just how good Hawkwind once were. This was a true psychedelic trip with some heavy, jazzy, proggy sounds, and, as with the Summer Solstice Shenanigans we had our very own Stacia stand-in making some flowing dance shapes in a glittery jumpsuit. This lady knows how to interpret music with dance. Every member of the band was firing on all cylinders. The guitar playing was exceptionally good. If you had shut your eyes during the set you might have imagined that it was Dave Brock on stage. There were too many highlights to mention but I loved “Damnation Alley” and set closer to “Quark, Strangeness And Charm”. When I reviewed the show in June I mentioned a quote from New Order’s Stephen Morris, “Punk rock started because in every small town, there was somebody who liked Hawkwind.” I am already looking forward to the next Spirit Of The Hawk gig, are you?

Mayhem’s 12 Days Of Christmas – Day 11 – Jazmin Bean

Christmas is nearly here and we are at Day 11 of Mayhem’s 12 Days of Christmas series for 2023. Focused on artists that have been featured on Spotify’s Misfits 2.0 playlist. Jazmin Bean, today’s choice, is a hugely talented artist that I discovered via the playlist. They are an artist almost like no other, and they have a sound that incorporates metal, pop, horror, acoustic, punk, cinema scope, emo, hip-hop, trip-hop, and dark rock all with hooks with the power to create a new universe. I would like to nominate Jazmin Bean to compose a soundtrack for a British Folk Horror film, I think that they would do an amazing job! The current single “Terrified” is gorgeous and raised the hairs on the back of my neck. Meanwhile, “Hello Kitty” kicks in with a kid’s refrain and then scares the living shit out of you when the huge riffs kick in, incredible tunes.

Jazmin Bean began performing in 2015, and they have got better and better with every release. The new album ‘Traumatic Livelihood’ is scheduled for release next February. Jazmin Bean is also a supremely talented make-up artist and has called their sometimes ‘doll-like’ appearance as ‘a genderless monster’. In addition to producing some incredible music, they also run a cruelty-free, vegan cosmetics company called Cult Candy Cosmetics. I don’t believe that there are many artists that I can think of whom I have seen their parents play live. But I have seen both Jazmin’s parents in live shows. Their Dad is Ginger Wildheart who I have seen many times and their Mum is Angie Adams who drummed with a punk band called Fluffy in the 1990s. I saw them once in a support slot, at least I think I did. Get listening to Jazmin Bean now, that’s an order!

Mayhem’s 12 Days Of Christmas – Day 10 – Scene Queen December 22, 2023

Day 10 of Mayhem’s 12 Days of Christmas features New York-born Hannah Collins who many will know as the originator and Empress of Bimbocore, Scene Queen. Yes, Scene Queen has invented her own genre which is a kind of nu-metal, pop-driven, punky sound that allows her to sing her incredibly well thought and feminist lyrics over some great tunes. I didn’t find Scene Queen via Spotify’s Misfits 2.0, although they featured on that playlist a lot. I was lucky enough to see Scene Queen live at the Leeds Festival back in 2022. I think she will be back at the Bramham Park site next year and I am already looking forward to that. She will also be performing at Download 2024.

Scene Queen has released a banging barrage of magnificent singles, particularly “Pink Bubblegum”, “Pink G-String” and three from her album ‘Hot Singles In Your Area’ which is scheduled for release next year. Those three are “18+”, “Pink Push-Up Bra” and the new single “MILF”, all of these suggest that the album might already be a contender for album of the year 2024. Another wonderful plus point is Scene Queen‘s excellent taste in music, back in October she invited Delilah Bon to support her on her UK tour. She has also hooked up with Bellesa Sex Toys, and offered some great deals on vibes! If Scene Queen isn’t in your life yet, she should be! Check her out!

Mayhem’s 12 Days Of Christmas – Day 9 – FKA Rayne December 21, 2023

It is time for Day 9 of Mayhem’s 12 Days of Christmas series for 2023 and today’s artist is another that I discovered thanks to Spotify’s Misfits 2.0 playlist. It is an incredibly talented alternative rock artist, FKA Rayne from Vancouver Canada. She started out as more of a pop artist back in 2019 but now embraces a more hardcore metal sound and she hasn’t lost her deft pop touches. The current single “Woof” is perhaps her best yet, although the competition is tough. I particularly love “Perverse”; last year’s “Praying Mantis” is stunning. Check FKA Rayne out NOW!

Mayhem’s 12 Days Of Christmas – Day 8 – Cassyette

Day 8 of Mayhem’s 12 Days of Christmas series for 2023 features Cassyette, one of the UK’s finest music talents and another artist that I discovered thanks to Spotify’s Misfits 2.0 playlist. She has been described as nu-metal, but personally I think she just takes metal to new, hardcore heights that it has not reached before. But it’s not only metal she also skillfully blends elements of electro and punk into her songs. Since “Jean” exploded into the world in 2019 there have been an incredible collection of great songs from Cassyette. Plenty of great singles, many of which were collected on the rather wonderful ‘Sad Girl Mixtape’ album from 2022. Her new single “Boom” is a beautiful, bombastic banger and her cover of Harry Styles’ “As It Was” is sublime. Cassyette will only get bigger and better in 2024, be there!
