“If your having girl problems I feel bad for you son” January 20, 2012

Firstly thanks to my good friend Mr Horslen for pointing this rather strange story out. Mr Fiddy Pence, aka Half A Dollar, aka Little Sense, aka Curtis James Jackson III and finally aka 50 Cent. It is the latter name that many of you know him as. After his latest escapade I would say that this man could also be known as Complete Knob! He posted some rigged pictures of Jay Z and Beyoncé‘s new baby Ivy Blue Carter. Click here to see them. Are they in bad taste? Probably. Are they particularly funny? Probably not. Has Fiddy had much publicity lately? No. Has he had a lot in recent days? Obviously. Is this just a cynical attempt to get him back in the news? You bet your ass it is!

I’ve always felt that 50 Cent is an ok rapper but perhaps lacks the humour and wit of the best, such as Eminem, and often lacks the intelligence of the truly great rappers, such as Jay Z. Fiddy has also sparked bemusement with some other tweets recently. He said that he wanted to be a bird so that he could fly and shit on people. Then you could say that 50 ‘shat on you’. I think this man is a bird; well he is a bit of a cock isn’t he? He has also tweeted that he doesn’t believe that he has much longer to live, but I wonder whether that is a metaphor for his dying career. read the news about those tweets on the NME site by clicking here.

In some related news Jay Z has vowed to drop the word ‘bitch’ from his lyrics after the birth of his daughter. That will take a lot of effort won’t it? “99 Problems” without ‘bitch’ in it? How’s that going to work? Will he replace with a similar word? Maybe ‘I got 99 problems but a ditch ain’t one’ or ‘I got 99 problems but a twitch ain’t one’. Please use the comments box on this blog to submit your own alternatives to ‘bitch’ and maybe we can send a list to Jay Z or Jay Zed as my good friend Karen McP calls him. Read the Jay Z no bitch story by clicking here.

“You wave your hand and they scatter like crows” April 10, 2009

Hello once again dear readers. I don’t know what religious persuasion you are, I’m an atheist, but the UK kind of shuts down a little for Easter. Right now I’m not sure whether that means I’ll post more or less this weekend. But anyway here is one for today, Friday 10th April.

let me kick off with some random stuff from a couple of days back. As the regular readers know I went to Whitby (aka Goth Central) for the day. Well while I was there I saw a van for a joinery company. Now I thought the name was quite amusing, but if you have very strong religious beliefs you might wish to stop reading now. OK I warned you, anyway the company was called JC Joinery and I thought that maybe that awful book the ‘Da Vinci Code’ held a degree of truth and maybe Jesus lived and his descendants continued with the family carpentry business. I wish that I had taken a picture of the van, because when I tried to find the company on Google I found loads of JC Joinery companies. Is there a deep seated and ancient conspiracy theory going on here? We should be told!

Back onto the music stuff now. Have you seen the rather excellent video for Eminem’s new single “We Made You“? If not just click on the title. It features appearances by Britney Spears, Amy Winehouse, Blake Civil-Fielder, Elvis Presley and Sarah Palin, but none of these are the real people. It also features appearances from the real Dr Dre and the real 50 Cent. On top of all that there’s a great Star Trek spoof . There is also a rather worrying line in the song where Mr Mathers says “If you think this is bad wait until you hear my album” well something like that anyway. I like the song and I reckon he’s back on form. “Crack A Bottle” never really did it for me. Let me know what you think of the new song.

Whilst his women thought he was dynamite in bed Mr Mathers did have quite a short fuse!

Check out this great article from the UK’s Guardian newspaper this week. It has an extract from Frank Zappa’s 1989 autobiography which suggests he had and understood the concept of file sharing long before anyone else. Certainly a long while before the music industry as most major labels still don’t have a clue! Click here to read it.

We are celebrating a birthday today as usual. Today is the 62nd birthday of Karl Russell. Who the hell is Karl Russell I hear you shout. Well he is Karl Russell the lead singer off of the Hues Corporation who hit the top of the US charts in 1974 with the wonderful single “Rock The Boat” The song also made it to number 6 in the UK and I still occasionally play it at my mobile disco gigs. In fact it’s seen by many as being on of the very first disco songs. The group’s name was a pun on the Hughes Corporation, with Hue being the colour of their skin. They had also suggested The Children Of Howard Hughes as a name but their label turned it down.

On this day in 1964 UK acts started a phenomenal run of seven weeks at the top of the US singles chart. Starting with “I’m Telling You Now” from Freddie and the Dreamers and followed by “Game Of Love” by Wayne Fontana, “Mrs Brown You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter” from Herman’s Hermits and finishing with “Ticket To Ride” by the Beatles.

On this day in 1970 at a gig in Boston Jim Morrison off of the Doors asked the audience if “anyone wants to see my genitals?” The management of the venue switched off the power and the gig was cut short. Jim was lucky Ms Bobbit wasn’t in the audience otherwise it wouldn’t have just been the gig that was cut short! Here are the Doors with “The End” live at the Isle Of Wight Festival in 1970. And for all you fact fans did you know where the Doors took their name from? It was from the Aldous Huxley book ‘The Doors Of Perception

And finally on this day in 1990 Tom Waits was awarded $2.475m in punitive damages after taking Dorito Chips to court following a radio advert in which the company had used a Waits soundalike. After the case was finished Waits remarked “now by law I have what I always felt I had…… a distinctive voice!” I wonder if Tom’s win led to the Credit Crunch for Doritos? (geddit?)

Here are a couple of songs from Tom Waits who is one of my favourite singers. Firstly and also in keeping with the fact that it’s Easter here is “Chocolate Jesus“. Second up is the wonderful “Downtown Train” some of you may recall Rod Stewart’s cover of this song which I thought was very good but not a patch on the original by Mr Waits

“She wears them micro mini dresses, hair hanging down her back” March 21, 2009

It’s Saturday 21st March and I’m back with even more delightful crap for you today. But before that here is some of the recent music news. Leon Jackson winner of X Factor 2007 has been dropped by his record label after just one album. Now I wonder if it’s down to the ‘Credit Crunch’ or simply because he’s crap. I bet you can’t guess which one I think it is! So I suppose he’ll be working in McDonalds with Gareth Gates before long. The Arctic Monkeys have put some new material on YouTube, including a cover of Lady GaGa’s “Poker Face” Click here for an update from their current rehearsals. And in a final piece of news Justin Timberlake is launching his own brand Tequila called 901. Not a very imaginative name is it? How about “I’m bringing Tequila Back”? or “Cry Me A Bottle” Anyway I suppose that it is a true AlcoPOP drink!

Let’s kick off with a few birthdays. Firstly Ray Dorset off of Mungo Jerry is 63 today. The band took their name from a poem in T.S Eliot’s ‘Old Possum’s Book Of Practical Cats’. The poem is called ‘mungojerrie and rumpelteazer’ The band are still around today with Mr Dorset being the ever present original member. To most people these days the band are probably sen as one hit wonders following the success of “In The Summertime” which went to number one in more than 20 countries in 1970. They reached the UK top 20 six times in the early 70’s and in addition to “In The Summertime” they also hit the top with “Baby Jump“. A Ray Dorset song reached number 1 in the UK in 1980, it was “Feels Like I’m In Love” by Kellie Marie. Dorset originally wrote the song for Elvis Presley although he never recorded it.

Meanwhile Russel Thompkins Jr off of the Stylistics is 58 today. Russell was the falsetto voiced lead singer until he left the group in 2000. Their biggest UK hit was “I Can’t Give You Anything (But My Love)” which was produced by the late great (here they come again those ‘ole l’s & g’s) Van McCoy. Most of their earlier hits were produced by the equally talented Thom Bell and often co written with Linda Creed. Although they never appeared on the famous Philadelpia International record label the group hailed from the city and were one of the most talented proponents of the soft sound of Philly Soul. Some might say that nowadays their biggest hits come across as somewhat cheesy, does that make them Philadelphia Cheese?

The new lead singer of the Stylistics was very happy with the groups new, more cheesy direction! Well if Isaac Hayes can do Hot Buttered Soul then why not?

And finally for the birthdays Deryck “Bizzy D” Whibley off of Sum 41 is todays young whippersnapper at just 29. Sum 41 come from a rather clean sounding town in Ontario, Canada. It’s name is Ajax! Although Whibley was actually born in Scarborough, Ontario. On July 16 2006 he married Canadian Punk Popstrel Avril Lavigne. Deryck has been guest guitarist on releases from Tommy Lee off of Motley Crue and also the legendary Iggy Pop. Sum 41’s download only single ‘March Of The Dogs” stirred up enough controversy among supporters of Dubya that Whibley was allegedly facing deportation from the US back to Canada. This came about because the opening couplet in the song was “Ladies and gentlemen of the underclass/The president of the United States of America is dead” Whatever happened to freedom of speech? Watch out for a new Sum 41 album later this year. In the meantime here are Sum 41 with “Fat Lip

On this day in 2001 Eminem was ordered $476,000 as part of his divorce agreement with his wife Kimberly ‘Kim’ Anne Scott. Also as part of the agreement Eminem would keep the US Mansion and the couple would share custody of their daughter Hailie Jade. The couple married for a second time in 2006 but were divorced again around three months later. Here is Em with his current single “Crack A Bottle” which also features 50 Cent and G Unit.

And finally on this day in 2001 Michael Jackson’s Interior Designer was interviewed by the Times newspaper and claimed that Jacko kept 17 life size dolls, of both adult and child sizes in his bedroom for…….. errrrrrrr……….company!!!!!! What’s that all about then?

It was strange how all the dolls appeared to look like Jacko too and how much easier would it be to perform plastic surgery on something made from plastic!
