Rolling Back The Years With Mayhem – 1963 October 23, 2024

This is the fifth in what I hope will be a very long-running series, just like my long-running life, so far at least! I have decided to look at the most popular songs from every year that I have existed. There will be some artistic licence on my part as I will always seek to include at least a few of my favourites from each year. The format will be a top ten for each year and will cover the music and songs I grew up with, came of age with, and achieved my greatest success alongside music that comforted me in bad times. This fifth top ten goes back to the year that I turned 4 years old, 1963. I don’t remember actually hearing these songs back then, but I have listened to them many times over the years. I have once again focused on the UK charts. the Beatles make their first appearance in the series, debuting at the top of the pile with “Please Please Me”. As a special time travel gift I have added a bonus track, the best-selling US single of 1963, “Sugar Shack” by Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs. This is definitely my favourite Rolling Back The Years Top 10 so far. Please get on board the Time Machine now, it will be a rough journey so bring a sick bag or two! On This Day ABBA called And Britain Took The Country Back! March 14, 2024

On March 14th, 1973, ABBA released the single “Ring Ring,” their first Swedish No.1 hit and debut release in the UK. The release was originally credited to Björn and Benny, Agnetha, and Anni-Frid, and was selected as Sweden’s 1973 Eurovision Song Contest entry, where it finished third. Just a year later, using the acronym ABBA as a name, the group won the same competition with their huge hit song “Waterloo.”

The 14th of March 1964 was the first time in the history of the UK charts that all Top Ten singles in the UK charts were by British acts. Number 1 was ‘Anyone Who Had A Heart’ by Cilla Black, 2 – ‘Bits and Pieces’ by The Dave Clark Five, 3 – ‘Little Children’ by Billy J Kramer, 4 – ‘Diane’ by The Bachelors, 5 – ‘Not Fade Away’ by The Rolling Stones, 6 – ‘Just One Look’ by The Hollies, 7 – ‘Needles and Pins’ by The Searchers, 8 – ‘I Think Of You’ by The Merseybeats, 9 – ‘Boys Cry’ by Eden Kane, and 10 – ‘Let Me Go Lover’ by Kathy Kirby. But to be fair, they weren’t all great songs, were they?

joe anderson liverpool mayorAccording to Joe Anderson, the Mayor of Liverpool, his city’s artists can claim more UK number one singles per head of population than any other city in the world. There have been 57 so far, including 17 from the Beatles. Let’s stick to cities and not smaller towns and villages though, otherwise Westlife might put Sligo on top of the list with their 14 UK number one singles. Incidentally I wonder how many number one singles London has had? Or any other city for that matter.beatles and boris

Joe was writing in Q Magazine to counter London Mayor Boris Johnson‘s ridiculous claim that London ‘made’ the Beatles. Surely it was Liverpool and possibly a degree of Hamburg that ‘made’ the Fab Four? What do you think of Boris’ comments? I think he is a complete arse!
