“And everywhere I look there’s a devil waiting” March 27, 2014

5124382-3x2-940x627Now the North Korean authorities have decreed that everyone must get a hair cut exactly like their supreme leader Kim Jong-Un, (Actually just male undergradutes to begin with). Really? I know it might sound a little rich coming from a bald bloke like me, but Mr Jong-Un has a shit haircut doesn’t he? Will North Korean women also have to have the same haircut too?

Imagine if every country had that rule I would have worn a wig for years, including a Thatcher syrup (that’s cockney rhyming slang for the benefit of my overseas readers). Nowadays I’d have to seek out a nondescript Cameron cut.

Anyway let’s celebrate this ridiculous news with a haircut themed post. While you are listening click here to read the story on the BBC site.

“I wish I was a Powerpuff Girl” March 6, 2014

ringo1Ringo Starr has made an appearance in an episode of the Powerpuff Girls show. I certainly never saw that coming, even after his role as narrator to the ‘Thomas The Tank Engine‘ animated series. But I suppose you could trace it back to his singing career right? I’d love to know what you think of Ringo’s Powerpuff performance. I have to share a joke I heard today too. What is the name of the drummer in the Mexican Beatles? Gringo Starr!

“Ain’t nothin’ wrong with this blasphemy” January 15, 2014

The+Heavy+heavy2016webThe Heavy are a British band from Bath. They have been around a while but haven’t had massive success yet, although two of their three albums have made it into the US top 200. Hopefully they may now be on the verge of greater success after Guinness have chosen to use their 2012 single “What Makes A Good Man?” as a soundtrack to their new advert set in the Congo.

guinness sapeursThe advert is another Guinness advert to focus on real people. This time it’s the Sapeurs of Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of the Congo, who are the stars. These are everyday working men who transform themselves into sartorial gods in the evening. Check out the advert and then the full song below.

bieber 1If indeed Justin Bieber has retired, and I for one really hope he has, it nows seems clear what he will do in his retirement. He intends to become an egg thrower if current press stories are to be believed. The young Pop Muppet has been accused of throwing eggs at his neighbour’s house. I wonder why he did this; is it because his thoughts are a little scrambled, is his brain fried, did he buy his monkey or was it poached, has he simply shelled out too much or is the yolk on him. Can anyone answer these eggstraordinary questions? Click here to read the story on the BBC’s Newsbeat website.

“I’m a hot air balloon that could go to space”

pharrell_620Pharrell Williams‘ rather excellent song “Happy” has returned to the summit of the UK singles chart having deposed “Timber” by Pitbull featuring Ke$ha. I have loved this Pharrell song from the moment I heard it on the soundtrack of the rather excellent film ‘Despicable Me 2‘. I suspect that it could be a big year for Pharrell, I believe he has a new solo album ready to go and also a collaboration with Paloma Faith due out in February.

“From Genesis to Revelation, yeah, the next generation will be, hear me” January 10, 2014

Junior+Murvin+1I can’t believe that I missed the news that Junior Murvin a very talented reggae star passed away in early December aged 67. Thank you to Record Collector magazine for including a suitable tribute in their ‘Not Forgotten’ section. The song which brought him to my attention was “Police And Thieves” from 1976. The song remains one of my all time favourites. I still have the CD version of the album of the same name. The song was written by Murvin with some lyrical tweaks from Lee Perry about the Yardie turf wars in Jamaica. But it also resonated strongly with British youth, particularly punks in 1976-77 against a backdrop of riots at the Notting Hill Carnival which for me was largely sparked by ridiculously hard-line and provocative policing from the Metropolitan Police. The Clash also recorded a rather excellent cover of the song, but the original, produced by Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry remains the best. I used to have Junior’s ‘Muggers On The Streets’ album from 1984 on vinyl. My thoughts go out to Junior’s family friends and fans. RIP Junior Murvin.

Justin-bieber-funny-justin-bieber-10889956-399-266Have the Beliebers started to lose faith in their pop Muppet Apollo? Certainly in the UK it would seem that the belief level among the once fundamentalist Beliebers has fallen drastically. Justin’s latest album failed to make the UK top 40. Its first week sales propelled it to the less than heady heights of number 46 and the following week it barely managed to stay in the top 100 falling a staggering 48 places to number 94. It is only a fan compilation, however it is also the first time an album of his has failed to reach the UK top 20. However the chart is not necessarily a barometer of quality given that One Direction are now number one and Olly Murs is at number 4. Given that Mr Bieber has 48 million Twitter followers though that chart performance must be disappointing. USA sales figures for the album are unavailable.

justin-bieber-funny-picturesIs this as a result of his announcement that he is retiring? Is he really retiring? His management says that he isn’t. I will continue to belieb believe that he is though, how about you. I think the retirement of the Canadian monkey botherer can only have a positive effect on the world of Pop and music in general. What do you think?

bowieAs is customary for me, being a very big fan of Mr Bowie I would like to wish him a very happy 67th birthday today, January 8th. Will he surprise me and the world with some new music as he did on his 66th birthday or will there be a tour announcement. Sadly I can’t see the latter happening, but if it did I’d be first in the queue. Celebrate the Dame’s birthday with me with this selection of Bowie songs that don’t get played enough in my opinion.

“Like a ghost that keeps walking behind me” January 4, 2014

jay traynorJay Traynor once of Jay and the Americans sadly passed away a couple of days ago aged 70. The group never had much success in the UK but one of Jay’s solo singles, “Up And Over” became very popular and much sought after on the northern soul circuit. Jay, whose given name was John started the Americans with Kenny Vance and Sandy Yaguda. His replacement in the group was called David Blatt but agreed to use the name Jay Black. Traynor went on to work more behind the scenes in the music industry. He worked in some capacity with many bands including the Who and Ten Years After. My thoughts go to his family, friends and fans. RIP Jay Traynor.

“Wine is sweet and gin is bitter”

phil everlyI was sad to hear the news that Phil Everly has died aged 74. Along with his older brother Don as the Everly Brothers they produced some amazing songs in the rock ‘n’ roll and pre-Beatles era. The Everlys had six UK number one singles from 1958 to 1961 and only three in the US Billboard charts. However they also had four number ones on the US Country chart and three on the US R & B chart. They topped the chart in Canada and Australia.

140103230626-01-everly-brothers-story-topThere magnificent harmonies influenced many pop and rock artists including Billie Joe Armstrong off of Green Day and Norah Jones who recently released a cover of the Everly Brothers album ‘Songs Our Daddy Taught Us’. Other artists greatly influenced by Phil and Don include the Hollies, the Beatles who said that the vocal arrangement for “Please Please Me” was based on “Cathy’s Clown”. Simon and Garfunkel were also big fans of the Everly Brothers and on hearing of Phil’s death Paul Simon said “Phil and Don were the most beautiful sounding duo I ever heard. Both voices pristine and soulful. The Everlys were there at the crossroads of country and R&B. They witnessed and were part of the birth of rock and roll.” I don’t think many people could sum the Everlys up better than that. My thoughts go out to Phil’s family, friends and fans across the globe. RIP Phil Everly.
